why does someone with just 1 baby, and it's not even born yet, need a minivan that seats 7 or 8 for? How big a baby do they think they are going to give birth to and how much baby junk do they think they are going to have to haul around?! I mean, wouldn't it be smarter to get a smaller econo car? |

I know this is kinda OT but we got a minivan before I was even pregnant with our second. We had some $ leftover from the sale of our previous home and after all, weren't we hoping to "need" one (with the 3rd child) within a few years?
Well, five years later, the minivan's second engine died (and it made more sense to look to buy a new used car than another engine) 13 days before our third child finally was born. We drove our new baby home from the hospital in a rental sedan. Didn't have the boys with us on the trip home anyway, but in case you ever need to know of a sedan that fits two convertibles and an infant seat, that 2008 Mercury Grand Marquis did...
We have another minivan now, but it's actually smaller than the last one!

ETA: Sorry! I posted that before I actually wrote anything, somehow.
Anyway, we did the same thing - got a minivan with our first baby. Thought we'd fill it right up. We still have that stupid minivan and I hate it! It is pretty much dead now anyway, and my in-laws are letting us borrow their extra vehicle... another minivan!

we got a minivan after our third child.
suburban after our 5th.
I've got a pretty tall dh and a 6 ft 2 son, another son close behind. the leg room just wasn't cutting it with the minivan...
plus now that I've got seating for 9, I can haul 6 big football players plus all their gear for carpool

I was pg with our 5th when be bought the big mama. (15 passenger van.) Our minivan died, and we needed to replace it, and a the rate we were going (we were 26 then.) We thought it would be silly to buy another minivan. We didn't want to have to replace it b/c of lack of space right away. I am SO glad we did. In 6 short years we have had 5 more babies! :)

oh don't get me wrong - please!
I really have no issue with anyone owning a minivan if that's just what they want.. free market and all that you know.
but I've meet several people over the years who said things along the lines of "We're pregnant, so I guess I need to buy a van."
and I'm thinking.. um what? huh?
I know people buy them for more than carting a large family. my widowed GF-i-l just bought one so he could haul around meals on wheels and his fellow elderly church members.
I guess what irks me isn't the minivan, it's this notion of all the junk you just have to have to have a baby. When the reality is you don't need any of it and might actually be better off without the majority of it, kwim?

This is the thing I did find funny about the commercial. When it kept making jokes about births on the rise so that people could buy this VW van, I expected to see pregnant couples with children hanging from them like grapes...you know, the way we looked when we bought our vans...not first time parents.

I hate those commercials...
We have a 15 pass also. It's darned handy for stock-up trips, field trips with friends, and for keeping the kids from mauling each other on long rides.
If we are FINALLY blessed enough to adopt, it'll come in handy for fitting more precious cargo.
Blessings,

LOL--When DH and I got married, we were in Europe, and he didn't have a car...mine wasn't shipped, so we needed to get one. We were ttc, and figured we could easily have a couple of dc before we paid the thing off, so we went ahead and got the van (plus, we were into re-enacting, and traveling then, so we kind of needed some storage space)....FOUR YEARS later, we got pregnant. I was in month 5 when the engine blew. We replaced the engine and got the van back right after dd was born (we borrowed vehicles to get us through)....
We traded it in on a second van when dd #2 was 6 mos old...and traded that one in 2 mos before the boys were conceived. Figured we'd have that van a good 4 yrs before we outgrew it, God willing...
Well, we got twins...so now the van is maxed out (a 2003 Honda Odyssey--great van, btw). We're paying it down, but I expect to go to a 12-15 passenger within the next couple of years, assuming we conceive again, God willing...we had thought we would be spending the tax return this next year as a down payment on a bigger vehicle, but it wasn't to be, at least not for the moment . We're figuring on going with the bigger one, if we can, just because teenagers and activities and friends and traveling to visit family (it takes 3 hrs to some of DHs family, 5 hrs to his home town, etc, etc--days to reach my family)...well ykwim...

This is what I find the most perplexing. Birth rates are certainly not on the rise. Here is an article from 2006 about Germany's birthrate being the lowest since WWII. This is my favorite quote from the article:
Quote:
Leading economists said unless Germans started breeding again Europe's biggest nation faced the prospect of reduced growth, economic decline and an elderly shrinking population. |
|
|
Maybe Bush should be saying to get us out of this economic decline we should all have babies!
And one more: The EU's Baby Blues
Last one from June 2008 New York Times: No Babies?

My dh and I just stared at each other after we saw that commercial. We couldn't believe how dumb it was.
