It's late, but I just finished mopping my floors with my new Sh-Mop.
Now why did I wait so long to follow the good advice given here?
My floors are so clean, the chore was so fast (I've been doing it on my hands and knees the last few months after my other trial mops) and it was so easy.
I have to thank Mary Chris, because I asked her the other day where she bought her Sh-Mop, as I had tried some of the other links before. The Clean Team's supplies were easy to figure out and just what the doctor ordered.
Whew! Now off to bed!

oh, that makes me so happy, Jenn !!!! My mom even loves the sh-mop, and she is NOT one to go all goo-goo-ga-ga over all the new cleaning tools that are on the market.

I borrowed one and keep trying to convince myself that I should buy one because it was so great. I'm Very Happy to see your good review, Jenn. Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list.

I have some questions here. I have a SH-Mop on the way, with three pads and two dust mop heads. In order to do three rooms, kitchen, diningroom, and livingroom, do I need more mop heads? Also, in my livingroom, I have hardwoods, but we have an area rug that is in BAD shape, and it is so large that it goes underfurniture, which makes mopping a real pain. How necessary is an area rug? I don't have one in any other room. It's not in the funds right now to purchase a smaller one, which is what I will eventually do. (a much smaller braided one that can easily be rolled up and moved aside for cleaning.)
My floors are a real issue. They are never clean and it drives me batty. We have a dog, cat, and of course 9 kids.

Other than the reusable cloth head, are these substantially different from the swiffer?

I'm so happy for you, Jenn! We've been doing the Speed Cleaning thing for years...since they started with a paper catalog! There are knock-off shmops that I see in regular stores (Home Depot, etc.) but they aren't the same quality. For all that mopping, you really do need the weight and size. Which gets me to...

I'm pretty sure that the swiffer is lighter. Can you put your whole weight on it to scrub traffic areas on a tile entryway, for example? Shmops have terry heads for wet cleaning and yellow heads for dusting. I love being able to wash and reuse.

I think that one white mop head is good for one regular sized room. I don't know if this is mentioned anywhere in the Speed Cleaning material, but when I'm in a pinch, I will turn the mop head inside out for extra cleaning surface. Over the years I also tend to purchase a few extra as the old ones get cruddy and I exchange them for new ones.
Rugs? Hardwood? Tile? Other? I've lived with every combination possible! Personally, if I can get rid of a rug, I do. If I can't, I vac the rug then partially roll it and clean under the edges (Speed Cleaning Rule 3: Work from Top to Bottom .)

Okay, so I'm loving the SH-Mop, but I'm having a difficult time with the dustmop. Sarah, I know you are a fan of this. I can't seem to get a 'pile' of dirt in one spot, and nothing really sticks to the dustmop. What am I doing wrong? Am I better off with a broom?

Maybe I should try this - my kids love the swiffer but I end up breaking them - too aggressive at the dirt I guess.

Lisa--I find there's too much crud on my floor for just a dust mop, so I often use the broom, but the dustmop is nice after mopping to get up those little bits left, and in the evening after a good sweep to really get everything up. It's also great for walls, ceilings, and doorways.

I agree. Another tip that works here, if I'm not able to dispatch a skilled broom user, I send my 9yo around our "edges", where tile and wall meet, with a dustbuster.
Love,

Okay, I have one kiddo and I always thought that if you had enough kids running around in socks, the default condition of the floors would be CLEAN!

My husband accidentally broke my Sh-Mop. I need to replace it, but I'm wondering if I should try a steam mop instead.
My floor is filthy...even though he broke it, I wasn't mopping regularly. Due to health issues, it's been hard to bring out the bucket and mop, even when the Sh-Mop is easier than others.
I know it's still work, but just wondering about other possibilities.
Inquiring minds want to know.

Jenn - I was not over thrilled with the steam mop. Used one for years - it did clean and disinfect but the floors were dully and did not look shiny and healthy.

I am having mop woes too and I really need to find some mop solution. I have been using both the Shmop and the Scotch Brite microfiber - and for the floor use either homemade cleaner (vinegar based) or Murphys. But it seems my floors are not getting clean. If I take a paper towel and spray cleaner after they have been mopped, there is a lot of dirt that still seems to come up ??? I occasionally Swiffer - and I have to use a couple for all the dirt to come up. I don't get it as we do not wear shoes in the house, do not have windows open right now because of allergies etc.
And I don't know why the shmop etc are not bringing up all the dirt??
I would love to find a mop that does not hurt my back too. I tried a microfiber shmop look alike from Target, and it hardly moved over the floors - the effort really hurt my back.

My problem with the steam mop.. it did clean and the floors looked good.. but it took way longer to do.. you have to move it more slowly over the floor than you would a regular mop.. so.. it sounded like a good idea but it just made the job take longer even if it was a bit less work.

I have an E-Mop, but I guess I never expected it to keep the floors clean on its own unless I seriously mopped daily.
I find most "mops" just move dirty water around on the floor. When I want the floors clean, I take a bucket of soapy water and a stack of rags and clean with that, never putting a dirty rag back into the clean water! I first started doing it years ago with the plan to get a Cuban mop as described in the book Organic Housekeeping, but I never have gotten the mop, so I can't say for certain how easy it is to push. I have little doubt it gets the floors clean, though. Here is a link I found explaining how to use it, but basically it is a frame so you can use your stack of cloths to mop without having to go on your hands and knees. You could use whatever cloth you like: microfiber, terry, prefold diapers, etc...

I never put my Shmop cloths back into the water. I keep changing the cloth until it comes out clean.
I guess I will stick to what I know works for me. I do like the Cuban mop, though.
I've been using the cotton cloths, just wondering if anyone has tried microfiber. What did you think?
My kitchen floor looks like tile, but isn't linoleum, but closer to pergo type of floor.

I never put my shmops in water either. We use a spray bottle of water - or just slightly wet the shmop. We change as soon as they are dirty. I like the Cuban mop, and have lots of old towels I can cut up and use for mopping. Maybe the only foolproof way is to get down on hands and knees and scrub?
The microfiber I tried from Target did not move easily.
The Scotchbrite Microfiber I have been using is not fantastic - it is ok at the beginning but gets dirty and worn easily and then does not work so well.

I do get them wet, but I start with a bucket of water and clean cloths, and then just keep changing them until they come up clean.
Thanks for the feedback on the microfiber.
There is a sale going on at Clean Team on the Shmops.
