Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

This was my birthday dessert last weekend and I can't wait to make it again:

Cherry Apple Crisp

Topping:
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup butter

Mix the flour, brown sugar, and salt, and then cut in the butter. Set aside and make the filling.

Filling:
6 apples of at least 2 varieties, peeled and sliced
1 16-oz. can tart pitted cherries (water pack)
1/3 cup sugar
2 tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Put the cherries with their juice into a bowl with the sugar, and let that sit while you slice the apples into your casserole dish. Then toss the cherries with the apples, along with the flour and cinnamon.

Sprinkle on the topping, and then bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes, or until apples are tender, topping is browned, and filling is bubbly.

It's a "must watch" around here...don't feel nerdy.

Alton Brown's "Good Eats", now THAT's a cooking show!

Hmm...I'm not familiar with Iron Chef either, but just yesterday made a scrumptious apple cake, using my grandmother's recipe. I tweaked it by adding dates, pecans, maple syrup and dried cranberries (plumped up for five minutes with boiling water, then well drained) and chunky applesauce, rather than fresh apples. Cheesecake frosting with maple syrup was the crowning touch.

There was some leftover applesauce, which I added to diced up turkey smoked sausage and sweet bavarian sauerkraut with fennel for a delicious dinner.

Dh and I loved watching the Japanese version, but the American version just isn't as fun. It lacks the drama and outfits of the original.
