This was posted on another list, but thought y'all might enjoy Veteran's Day teacher resource guide -- it's secular but looks like it has some pretty good stuff to honor our military.

There is some really great stuff here. I especially liked the idea of talking to a veteran - a good reminder to have my daughter do an interview with my father who is a Korean War veteran. He has an amazing rosary story from the time he was in Korea.
I also found the data on the numbers of still living veterans from each war very interesting. Less than 200 from WWI. I'm surprized there are that many - they all have to be at least a hundred!

Thank you for remembering those who've served our beloved country. It is so, so important to pass along to our children these important ideas: honoring our veterans, respecting our flag, remembering our heritage of freedom. In so many other countries, people aren't free to homeschool, or to have a private conversation on their telephones, or to bear as many children as God wants to give them.
Regardless of our opinions of current or past military conflicts, we should remember that the freedom we enjoy today isn't free at all. Our Founding Fathers risked everything for a future they could only dimly foresee. They could have suffered a traitor's death if England had won or if they had been captured by the British army. So, too, do our veterans risk all to ensure we can still enjoy those hard-won liberties.
Please pray for all of our veterans. Our military chaplains deserve extra prayers. They must do so many things, especially when deployed with combat units. I know one Navy chaplain (Baptist) who learned to say the Rosary so he could comfort wounded and dying Catholic Marines in Iraq. He really wanted to give these young men the best spiritual comfort he could. Catholic chaplains I've known really take their responsibilities seriously; they know that military leaders turn to them for moral guidance, and they know that enlisted folks look to them for reassurance that God is still with them, even in the bleakest moments. On top of that, chaplains must live up to the high expectations of everyone around them, all the time.
(And please pray for chaplains' spouses...I know Catholic chaplains don't have them, but the wonderful spouses I've known really deserve our prayers!)
Thank you for this thread. My husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, uncles and great uncle (among others!) are/were veterans. Great-uncle Norbert died near Florence in WWII and is buried in the American cemetery there. My uncle by marriage, Dan Yocum, survived a kamikaze attack on the USS St.-Lo in WWII. Another uncle by marriage served in the Air Force. My husband's family has served the U. S. Navy with pride for three generations. (I assure you, all the spouses served, too!)
If we honor our flag and our country, we will never forget how blessed we are to be free, and we will never forget to honor those who served our great nation.

We have a retired chaplain from Vietnam as one of our priests (we get REALLY old Catholic priests down thisaway  ) -- anyway, Fr. Robert is a good example of a great chaplain and veteran. Thanks for reminding me to have the kids do something extra special for Father on Friday!

Why don't you try the Catholic Register and those Amazing Grace books by Acsension Press (??). You could also send it to Catherine at domestic-church.com for online publication. I'll rack my brains for some other places.

I pulled out our patriotic songs CD so that we can play that this Friday. It includes several of the serivce songs like "Anchors Away", "The Marine Hymn", and "US Field Artillery March", "Semper Fidelis" - plus some marches. Thought it would be a good way to remember our service men and women.

Got a Veteran's Day book at library today and learned about the poppy's association with veterans. I always remember the VFW handing out those paper poppies for donations, but I never knew the significance of the poppy until I read this in the book. Poppies were the subject of a poem called, "In Flanders Fields" which was written by a soldier/doctor on the battlefield in WWI. All around poppies were growing - because the poppy only grows in rooted-up soil and that is how a battlefield would be. The VFW and others have adopted the symbol.

Hmmmmmmm.....that gives me the idea to read War Poetry today or tomorrow. A google search brings up this site among others that interestingly are mostly WWI sites. I guess that war inspired a *lot* of poems! There are several Prose and Poem selections at the bottom including one on how the poem In Flanders Field was written. I love that poem.

Roll your eyes...   but I'll throw in that Veteran's Day is also the feast of St. Martin of Tours...patron of soldiers. So Martinmas feasting all ties in!

Jenn -- thanks! My kids need to know abut this saint as we've run out of "knight" saints for them (evidenced by a dozen little boys dressed as Michael or St. George at last week's All Saints party)!
Any other recipes than the St. Martin soup -- I don't have goose in the 'frig

Loads...but to start with, there are many on Catholic Culture's page. See side column.
Cooking with the Saints has Martinshornchen (St. Martin's Day Croissants), Pizza di San Martino (St. Martin's Day Cake), St. Martin's Tore (Gataue Saint-Martin), Crabmeat St. Martin, and Martinsente (St. Martin's Day Duck). I can type up a recipe that you can't find on the internet. But I would say keeping on the soldier theme, to make the horseshoe cake or cookies. Plus, you can look at this list and search for recipes based on this page.

You might find this list of patron saints of soldiers helpful. I just found out about St. Maurice -- he was a black soldier who carried the Holy Spear for a while. Pretty neat!
Plus there is
Saint Camillus of Lellis
Saint Expeditus
Saint Longinus
Saint Achilleus
and lots more. You can never run out of soldier-saints!

Veteran's Day is this Saturday, November 11. I recently found America's White Table at the library. It describes a military tradition I've often seen at balls and dining outs. The toast never fails to draw a tear from me.
Also, Blessings from the Battlefield is a compilation of true experiences of some of our chaplain-priests. I give it  .

I found this book at the bookstore months ago. I was planning to write a review for Veteran's Day.
We're doing a white table at home this week and I'll have my 9 yr old write a short report on the tradition and symbolism.
We have our KC Past Grand Knight's Banquet this coming Saturday and we're going to reset the table at the hall and have my little pupil read and explain the tradition to everyone there in honor of Veteran's Day.
It's a good chance for public speaking.
