Dear ladies, my family and I need your prayers. I had hoped to start reporting on our first forays into homeschooling at the beginning of September, but I have been in the hospital three times in the past five weeks for a fairly rare autoimmune disease called ITP. In a nutshell, the immune system goes haywire and attacks the body's own platelets. A normal platelet count is 150K-400K; below 20K usually calls for hospitalization; below 10K there is a risk of spontaneous and fatal brain hemorrhaging. After two stints in the local hospital, they discharged me from Johns Hopkins here in Maryland a couple days ago at 20K; my outpatient biweekly platelet count today is 10K. It has been as low as 6K over the past several weeks. Needless to say, this is terrifying, and it shows no signs of being over anytime soon.
We had no choice but to wean our 1yo ds cold-turkey, but fortunately it seemed harder on me than on him, and he is mercifully oblivious to the whole situation, as far as we can tell. Our 3yo ds is taking it harder. My parents and dh's parents have been staying with dh and the boys in turns, helping him manage when I'm in the hospital and helping me when I'm home, as I'm currently so weak that if the baby is on my lap I cannot stand up.
Please pray for us, that the outpatient chemotherapy I'm receiving now will help both stabilize and normalize the platelet counts; that, as my 3yo ds prays nightly, I won't have to go back to the hospital again; that I will stay calm and strengthen my own trust in God through this ordeal; that we will accept His will whatever happens.
