Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Corry, we got 8.75 inches of rain in one day due to IKE and are still recovering from water damage, so all of you Texans have been in our daily thoughts and prayers.
So, did you ever leave home? (due to not having power)how is the gas supply around you? Did your dh miss work?

welcome back to "civilization!!"

Thanks for the update. I have a friend in Houston who has not yet e-mailed and I was starting to worry--now I can assume he and his bride have probably just been dining by candlelight for the past two weeks!

Lisa,
I read with interest in the paper every day how Ike was affecting other parts of the nation. On the radio, one man was profiled who has homes both in Houston and in Illinois, I believe. He had worse damage in Illinois, ironically enough.

We stayed at home the entire time. First, we expected to have power sooner based on what the electricity provider was telling us. Second, within two days of the hurricane, the weather was really wonderful when an unseasonable cool front came through. That lasted for about five days. Finally, we retained our water service and natural gas service (our gas grill and hot water heater). Many people lost their water, and if we had not had the water, we definitely would have left town.

My husband had an entire week off, which helped as far as dealing with getting ice, etc. Getting gas was crazy for a full week, but fortunately we did not need to get in line since we had full tanks and didn't really need to drive anywhere. We also did not have a generator, so there was no need to keep filling tanks.
