4, September birthday. I will add this; I was very ready for Kdg., but when college time came, I sure could've used another year of maturity--both emotionally and academically. I just wasn't ready at 17.

here's a thought though.. when we were starting K.. they were doing the stuff that is now often done in pre-K etc.. kids are being pushed to work at more school-ish work sooner.. so while I started K at 5.. NOW, if they're not being pushed into school for the free babysitting, kids aren't starting until closer to 6 than 4... the younger 5's waiting that extra year.. because the type of work they're expected to do is older work whether they want to admit it or not.

5, April birthday
*My brother turned 5 the week school began and my mom will forever regret not waiting to send him until the next year. My oldest son will be 5 this year and he's clearly not ready....even for homeschool K.

I was 5 my birthday is December. My mom tried to get the district to let me in at 4 almost 5 but they refused saying that I had to be at least 5 to enter school. My mom was upset because she thought I was ready. Anyway, after 4th grade they wanted to move me ahead to 6th as I was very bored in school. At that point I had already established friends and didn't really know anyone in the grade above so my mom said no. I spent 5th grade doing basically nothing waiting for my classmates to catch up. I tutored younger kids who were in special ed alot of the day. Luckily, I moved in 8th grade to a place that had alot more students and resources and I was able to stay somewhat challenged throughout the rest of my school career.
I write all this just to say how great homeschooling is! If I had been homeschooled I could have started school when I was ready, not at some artificial point determined by someone who didn't know me. If we hadn't moved when I was going into 8th grade...I shutter to think of how I would have turned out. When I am bored I cause problems (well, at least I did at that age ) and I was already starting to cause problems at my old school.

I was 5 March birthday. But The kindergarten I went to was only 2 months long. I even remember the nap times. I thought that was strange because I never napped at home. Looking back I think it was only a preparation for grade 1. To get us ready for those long boring days of class time.

WOW- lots of March birthdays!
I was 5, March birthday.
Yes, I think K was very different when I went.
It was afternoon, we had snack with milk every day (a slightly warm cup of milk always takes me back to those little cartons of milk we had with paper straws!)
Naps were everyday, recess! everyday. Storytime every day, time for play at a "station" (there was a small playhouse, clay, painting, or piano.) We had music a couple times a week, too. And I vividly remember the alphabet books we made. Yes, it definitely sounds more like now-a-day preschool.
Those teachers sure got alot done in three hours!
My current boys I am starting K only after they have turned 5. My #2 ds started K at a private school when he was 4 going on 5, and it was a big mistake for him, and I knew it, but went along with teacher and "others". Moms know their kids best.
God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I was 4, with a mid-October birthday. I was more than ready academically, but I was NOT ready to be away from home, even in first grade. I absolutely hated school when I was little.

5, June birthday.
I sent my oldest (June birthday) to Kindergarten at age 6 on Wednesday. I'm homeschooling her 5yo sister (August birthday) because she is (academically) ahead of her big sister. It's a tricky situation that we've been praying about for the last two years...

I started at 4, with an early October birthday. I was too young for the public school, so my mom sent me to private kindergarten. Then we moved, and I wasn't allowed to start 1st grade there at age 5, so I had to stay in K until I turned 6, then I had to take a test to join 1st grade. I remember thinking that it was so ridiculous that I had to stay in K for those couple of months, because the private K I went to was fairly rigorous and the public one I was stuck in later was just playing in the sand and stuff like that.

I started kindergarten at age 5 (July birthday) and moved mid-year to a state that didn't have kindergarten. (Alabama). My mom was convinced I'd be behind, so she sent me to summer school (with the kids from first grade??) I think all summer school did was to convince me that I was "behind", when really I was "ahead".

I started at 4, with an October birthday. At that time, where we lived, you only had to be 5 by Dec 31st.
