Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I read this book this last Christmas. A kind friend loaned it to me.

I liked the atmosphere of learning promoted in the book.

However, most of the other ideas were either a) nothing new or b) not to my liking.

I guess I embrace the culture and technology and movies more than the Bluedorns do. I don't know if embrace is the right word but I felt there was a separatist attitude in the book. I think we can make a difference in the world by being active in it - hence my older sons and their political involvement.

I think the book tended to downplay university education but we have found gaining a degree to be of value.

I am not sure of their take on education and older girls/young women.I don't think a career is, of necesity, a bad thing for a young woman - who knows how God can use this or His plans for this young woman? No outside jobs seems a hard line, to me.

But then, I don't have daughters!

I also thought that some of the rhetoric against schools was just that - rhetoric. Some of my friends send their dc to school and while I do not choose that option, I am not comfortable with deriding that option either ( in spite of my post on the teen board!)

I really like the maths ideas and reading ideas - not formal maths before age 10, for example.

Overall, an interesting book but not one I would like to own.

Hope I am not too opinionated!
