Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

So many wonderful names!!

I'm just going to throw this one in-- we named our daughter, Katie, after my great grandmother, Catherine Aurelia. After she was born, I noticed in our diocesan paper that she was born within days of St. Aurelian (didn't know there was one!). Also, when I was in college, I happened upon a relic of Blessed Catherine Aurelia, founder of the Sisters of the Sacred Blood of Jesus (I think?), and completely forgot about it until after my little girl was born.

I think she was "supposed" to be named that!

My parents:
Sara
Elmore

Husband's:
Laura
Ronald

My grandparents:
Virginia & Elmore
Lyna and James

Husband's grandparents:
Laura and Ben (actually a step-grandfather)
Mable and Raymond

My oldest daughter is named for my paternal grandmother's mother, Ada, who died in 1907, when my grandmother was 9, of appendicitis. My grandmother always said that I looked like her. She was Ada Florence; our Ada is Ada Katharine, because the names just seemed to go together.

My 10yo son has my mother's maiden name, Matthews, as his middle name. His first name is Joel, which we just liked.

My 6yo son's name came straight off a family gravestone -- Benjamin Brooks. The original Benjamin Brooks was the patriarch of my mother's family in West TN, migrating there from somewhere in NC in the late 1830s. Benjamin Brooks Thomas is a similarly adventurous kind of person . . . And my husband's maternal grandfather was named Ben, so that was a neat coincidence. Made him happy to have another Ben.

My youngest daughter is Rachel, after my husband's paternal grandfather's mother; her middle names are Emily Holmes. Holmes was my maiden name, and Emily Holmes was the wife of my dad's family's West TN patriarch, also a migrant from NC in the late 1830s, who came west, built a house, then realized that he'd built it in TN, when he wanted to live in Mississippi. So he tore the house down and rebuilt it just over the state line. And Emily didn't shoot him. So that's also who my Rachel is named for. Mostly she goes by Ray, kind of accidentally -- it's how she writes her name, which is easier than "Rachel" -- but my husband's paternal grandfather was named Raymond, and my sister-in-law and niece's middle names are both Ray, so that works out kind of nicely, too.

I love names, too!

Sally

PS -- My name is actually Sara, after my mother, and my brother is named Elmore, after my dad. We were really trying to break the "naming children for their parents" syndrome which is rampant in my family.

My dh just emailed this to me,

Ethel, Norman, Irene dying out as naming fashion evolves
Posted Wed Aug 13, 2008 12:38pm AEST

Traditional baby names like Ruby, Olivia and Joshua may have enjoyed a revival in recent years, but many old favourites stubbornly refuse to come back into fashion.

Research for a baby website has listed the once-popular names that have suffered the most spectacular fall from grace over the last 100 years.

Top of the boys' list was Norman, which has seen a 99.85 per cent decline in popularity since 1907.

The name, which means "north man" in Old German, grew in popularity after the Norman conquest in 1066.

Walter and Percy came second and third on the list of endangered names.

The biggest faller among the girls was Gertrude, derived from the Old German for "spear maiden".

Edna, Ethel, Irene and Elsie also made the top 10.

But the survey found that not all names are vulnerable to changing tastes.

Thomas, last year's second most popular boy's name, has been in the top five for at least the last 200 years. William has also been in the top 10 for two centuries.

For girls, Elizabeth has been among the favourites for at least 200 years.

Other names have enjoyed a revival under a different guise.

Olive, number seven on the list of declining names, has a direct descendant in Olivia, third most popular last year.

Some old-fashioned names have grown in popularity thanks to celebrity parents.

Singer Charlotte Church called her baby girl Ruby in 2007 - the name was number two on last year's top 10.

Sarah Stone, editor of www.gurgle.com, the mother and baby social networking site that commissioned the study, said some names could disappear altogether.

"Not so long ago it seemed we all knew a Great Uncle Harold or Auntie Irene, but sadly it seems these names could soon be lost forever," she said.

My grandmothers: Virginia Ann and Thelma Lorene. One of my cousins named her second daughter Melissa Lorene and on the other side of the family we have a Melissa Ann. If I had another daughter I would probably use Virginia.

Husband's grandmothers: Bess Lorain and Florencia nmn. Our niece is named Alyssa Lorain.

Various generations of Great-grandmothers on my side: Katharyne Ann, Arabelle, Bessie Hazel, Sarah Jane, Bertha Elizabeth Rose, Ida Belle, Belle, Dorothy Mary. Back among the great aunts we have a Mehitabel and a Mallssie Belle (b. 1891). Don't ask me how it's pronounced!

Great-grandmothers on husband's side: Edna, Flora, Alice, Ione, Elizabeth.

I think most of my ancestors are midwestern, from German-English ancestry. My husband's is the same except for his adoptive father's line; they're Filipino Hawaiian and we don't know anything beyond one set of his father's grandparent's names.

Both my maternal grandmother and *her* grandmother were called Arabelle! Two of my grandmothers cousins (sisters) were Ida and Bertha! How's that for neato? We've got some Belgian on my grandmother's side... Mostly were English/Scottish/Welsh/Irish.

Blessings,

My grandmother's name was Elsie. When i was a teenager, I told her that if I ever had a little girl, I would name her Elsie.
Well, she absolutely forbade it. She said that people "will call her Elsie the cow!".
So, when my daughter was born, we flipped the letters in Elsie to make the name Elise in honor both of my grandmother and her wish that I not name my daughter Elsie.
:-)

Neat article! Since we've almost settled on Walter for our boy name, its nice to know we are part of keeping a dying name alive!

My grandmothers were Lillie Mae and Marie and my Grandfathers were Robert and Richard Lindsay (I'm Lindsay Marie).

The reason I like Walter is because Anne of Green Gables had a Walter, I love Jem for the same reason.
