My husband's grandmother was Mildred... that's why she always went by her middle name! It's a tough one!

I see that now...Jodie, too! Hey, my grandmother's mother was Matilda, btw.
Say, wouldn't it be funny if through this we found that some of us are related?

oops, yes on DH's side there was a Mildred, and also a Millecent.
AND dh's SIBLINGS (in their young 30's) HAVE those names as first names but all 8 of them (dh included) go by their middle name, as their first names are "family" names.
.....a tradition we are NOT passing on!! ha ha

For the most part, I love the old names.
Grandmothers:
Matilda Thomasine (my dd is the 4th Thomasine)
Stella Pearl
Cordie (no middle name)
Laura (???)
Mothers:
Freda Thomasine (after her father, Fred)
Lila May
The most interesting one:
Leticia Serepta (great grandmother)
What about male names?
Grandfathers:
Ernest (no middle name)
Fred (no middle name)
Ralph (no middle name)
John Henry
Dads:
Richard Conrad
Seward Calvin (after a judge in Tenn. and Calvin Coolidge. My poor dad never could live down those names. He was always Stu.)
And I was wondering when middle names became popular because quite a few in my family don't have them.

That would be interesting. Neither of my parents have middle names (born 1929, 1933) though some of their siblings do.

I sat next to a martial arts teacher at a conference this weekend. She was a rough character and quite the dramatic personality.
At one point Annie walked over to me whining. .. ...after she had just given me a lecture about how many children she gets through her studio with bad attitudes and behavior problems.
My dh had to stop by to pick-up Annie and when she saw him she immediately recognized him as being related to my sister-in-law (married to his older brother). Turned out we were related through marriage.
Who knew?
I've seen a couple of Gladys mentioned.
I had a great Aunt Gladys too. That's a common one.

We were just at the grocery store and Chelsea asked me if I liked the name Olivia. Sure, I replied. And she proceeded to tell me if a future baby of hers looked like an Olivia she wanted to name her that.
I reminded her that she had two close cousins (an Olivia and and a Gracie Olivia) with that name already.

My grandmother was Beulah. Now THAT's the worst name ever, LOL!
My other grandmother is Marjorie. Older women in dh's family were Virginia Ruth and Dorothy.
My daughters have old-fashioned names:
Emilia Ruth
Valeria Elizabeth
Clara Grace
I have a total 70's name which I hate.
My grandfather's names were Lory (mother's maiden name) and Roman. Great uncles were Alfred, and Walter.
My husband's grandfather's names were Harold and Theophilus.
I LOVE the name Theophilus! It's so cool. But we already have a baby with the initial XQ, I'm not sure dh will go for another unusual name, LOL!

Actually, it's said James-I-na. Just rolls off the tongue so nicely, doesn't it?

That is a tough one!
Some of the northern names are just awful...Mildred is bad enough, but I have two aunts named "Ethel" and both were/are called "Wes" which just sounds better.

Mark's maternal gradnmother was Bertha. Beautiful, holy, woman. Wonderful grandmother.
But I always connect "Big" with "Bertha" and can't see beyond that name.
Grandmother Bertha will always be "Memama" to me.
Eunice is a name I always connect with Carol Burnett.
