Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

For laminating, this might work:

1) Cut 2 wide strips of contact paper, the same height as the paper part of the flags.

2) Stick a row of flags on one strip, leaving a tiny space between each one. (The toothpicks will be sticking out the bottom, not on the contact paper.).

3) Sandwich the other piece of contact paper on top.

4) Make vertical cuts to separate the flags.

5) Be seized with a fit of anguish because you either a) made the contact paper too small, b) put it on askew, c) got a crease or bubble in it, or d) trimmed the flags too close.

(In my case, it would be e), all of the above. )

As for the toothpick stands, we ordered one, as a "prototype specimen." As far as I can tell, they just cut up a sheet of stick-on rubber feet (the kind that you'd find on the bottom of an appliance), and poked a hole in each one with an awl. (Not too precisely, either; ours is a little off-center . ) The brand name is 3M. I think it's this one... 4 for 99 cents... but you could probably find a better price if you're buying them in quantity.

Edited to add: The official name for this product is 3M Bumpon. They come in various colors, shapes, and sizes. The flag stands appear to be made from the hemisphere shape, in the 0.63" diameter size (which are a little bigger, and more expensive, than the ones in the above link).

The product # is SJ-5027. You can find them at a few online suppliers for around $0.25 each -- not really much of a savings when you factor in shipping. On the up side, you can get them in brown, which would sort of look like a mini version of the wooden flag stands.

We'll be keeping a lookout for something similar at a local hardware or electronics surplus store.
