Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

He had a miserable night last night because of the pain. The wound, more like a big hole, looks terrible. Poor little guy. Fortunately, the doctor says it should heal on its own, but we need to prevent infection. He will be on a liquid/soft diet and no dairy until it closes up. Any ideas on what to feed my little guy????? I don't want him to lose weight.

Would popsicles help numb the pain? It seems like something cold would help. Poor guy.

I'm so sorry about the pain.

Liquid/soft diet: (I got these ideas off of a dieticians website, plus what I remember from being in direct care/hospital work):
all vegetable juices, all juice or nectar or canned fruit, cooked refined cereals (puree with extra water if needed); farina, grits, oatmeal, cream of rice, cream of wheat, sherbet, jello/gelatin, fruit ice, honey, syrups, broth of all types, scrambled eggs, tiny pastas that can be swallowed down, banana, avacado,

BABY FOOD! :) So many flavors to choose from. You can puree almost anything you are eating if you add enough water in a blender (this is for a soft diet, not "liquids only")

Ruth,
Amy's advice is good, just try to avoid anything even slightly acidic until it really starts to heal.

Mouth wounds bleed a lot like head wounds, but they do heal quickly!

protein shakes! He will need his energy to heal faster.
They are hard to find without dairy though...

Not many ideas on foods except soup, Popsicles etc that are liquid and easy.

To keep out infection have him rinse with Listerine once or twice a day. It really helped one of my boys when they bit through there lip. He had no infections and I juss swabbed the wound with it twice a day. For Kolbe i would just have him rinse with it and he should be fine.

Hope that helps.

Ruth - I'm so late in seeing this. You've gotten such great advice for little Kolbe, but I'm throwing in my prayers with my whole heart for speedy healing!!!!

Sending up many prayers here, Ruth. I know all about the liquid diet right now with Rachel's cleft palate repair. It's a pain! Amy's advice is good. Luckily for us Rachel is so little and will eat baby food. PediaSure is good, too. Lots of nutrition and calories. Rachel drinks almost 2 of those everyday. We also pureed lots of stuff in the blender. Whatever we were eating we tried to puree for her. Good luck and know I'm praying and right there with you.

Poor little guy! Poor parents!

Would he drink a Boost? My Aunt swears by the chocolate kind when she had mouth and tonsil issues last year. It has many calories so her weight never became too much of an issue drinking it.

I think you were given great advice. Lots of snuggle time with Mommy and baby sister would probably help loads on the road to recovery!

Many prayers from Chicago....

Love,

Mb

Just FYI, Pediasure, Ensure, Boost - they are all dairy. So are many protein powders, so check if you need to avoid it.
