We school year round but will be taking a few weeks off at the end of Sept/beg. of Oct. to move. Hopefully we'll be settled in enough by the end of Oct. to start a new year.

Not sure yet. I am thinking I might do some sort of kick-off type thing mid-august, like a tea or something. But who knows. The house is still full of boxes, including most of my Montessori stuff and almost all of our science stuff. I have no idea where I am going to put it, and we are definitely still mentally in summer mode. I suppose it will all come together eventually, so I am not sweating it.

I'm thinking of Aug. 25. Usually I start right after Labor Day, but we already know dh is going to be away for a couple of months this fall (home on weekends, I hope) and so we'll probably take a couple of Fridays to drive to Norfolk to see him. This year we had to go a week longer than I'd wanted to complete ds's Carnegie units. Starting a week earlier - even if it's only "school lite" - will help avoid these problems.

We're starting August 19, which is a week later than the local school district around here. We school Tue - Sat to take DH's days off into account (Sun & Mon) and we have family coming to visit the week before.

Right after Labor Day, this year.
Last year I tried to follow the schedule for the local schools as closely as possible, and I didn't like it. We started too early, had too many interruptions, and still didn't finish till the end of the first week in June.
Starting after Labor Day works better for us, and we enjoy having a little more time to enjoy summer (and I need the time to get ready!).

The day after Labor Day. Ds's college move-in day is August 23, so we'll take off the week after to let the dust re-settle!
Peace,
Nancy

KC, I know 4 years seems like a looong time (even ONE more year feels looong!! ) but it really does goes by fast. Congrats to you, too. It really is such an accomplishment for our dh's! And us!

Schools around here start after Labor Day (and of course my oldest must do things exactly like her public-school peers ), so officially that's when we'll begin. I do, however, plan to begin a short form-drawing main lesson block (Waldorf style) August 18th. Our weather here is beautiful during August and most of September (and then the 9 months of rain start! ), so our first month of school will be mostly nature study, anyway... |

Same here! The gool ol' Pacific Northwest! Our summer activities outside are just gearing up (although I'm wearing a long-sleeved cardigan today ) and so we'll be enjoying our August and then "start" after Labor Day, although Sept is mainly outside fun too.

well I was just thinking that I'll start either next week or the week following but only with reading and math to get us going and then add in more stuff when the schools start back up Aug. 25.
I'm thinking I could handle reading and math while nursing the baby in the afternoons.. he's been holding me hostage most of the afternoon lately and since I can work with a child one handed in those subjects.. I think we could work them in.. next week we won't be swimming so I'll have my mornings to get things done. hmmm I'll also try and work on a general schedule for me to attempt to follow.. need to account for new baby idiosyncrasies in it

The college semester starts for dh on August 25th, so that's always a good time to start a new routine. I always start a new routine at the start of a new semester, and usually it's blown all to heck by the end.
We're pretty unschooly, so I see it more like a life-style change than the start of a school year (or a diet). I am really more worried about me keeping to a cleaning schedule than the kids doing school; I think I need more discipline and structure before I can give them any.
I am trying to ease into the new routine, but I hope to have most of it in place before the 25th. And then I'll integrate a few days of structured work and activities into the week.

We usually try to start on September 8th... the Blessed Mother's birthday. Singing happy birthday to Mary is a fun way to end our first day (and eating cake, too!)

Most will start the first full week of September, but my highschoolers are beginning a subject or two now in order to stay ahead and perhaps "bank" up some days for unforseen chaos or scheduling pressures ahead.

I'm with Sara and Suzanne, we won't start until September 8. When we see the school buses start going on practice runs throughout the neighborhood, then we know it's time to get back to work! Plus, we're not done with VBS until Aug 15 and I need a little break (to plan RE for the parish--yikes!) to finalize lesson plans and clean out last year's cubbies before we get going again. Our co-op doesn't start Latin class until late September and my dd Fiona doesn't want to get ahead and be bored having already learned the lesson from Mom. Since Latin is one of our primary subjects, it makes it hard to get started much earlier.
Maybe it's just the PNW that's weird like this--does the rest of the country school from August through May? I can remember years where snow days kept us in school til early July.

We've always started after Labor Day, that usually gives us almost a month more summer than the school kids down here. This year though I was thinking of starting earlier, wa-a-ay earlier. In fact, I really wanted to school all through this nasty part of the year so we could take huge chunks of time off in the winter when it is nice. But we actually had a real live girl who actually likes to play show up on the dock. And then two boys Marianna's age moved in too. So we've been swimming and playing while those kids are off for the summer.
Autumn is looking nuts-o for traveling and visitors already. Three weeks of August are gone, a week in September for visitors, a wedding in October that I'm so not looking forward too... really, what's the point in starting? We'll have just gotten into a groove and the holidays will be here! And then it's January and that's when I wanted to take time off but can you really take time off if you've never started???
Uggh. I need another cup of joe for this dilemma.

We aren't gearing up to start until mid September....we are taking holidays the first two weeks and have the inlaws coming as well.
I am just enjoying the puttering of summer so much I don't think I will ever want to start
