Leah, If you are happy with the Gerber diapers, you would be thrilled with Diaper Service Quality (DSQ) Prefolds that you can order online. |

Lisa,
Where do you order these from? I haven't found a place.
Thanks, |

I'm not Lisa , but I have found that Julie's Stuff is the cheapest for DSQ prefolds. The premium size are $2 each. Nicki's Diapers also carries them for that price, but you have to buy them by the dozen- they are more expensive individually. I have purchased items from both places and have been happy with both.

I need some prefolds for my baby due in Dec. I do use cloth on my now toddler baby but don't have any newborn size cloth dipers to go with the new born wraps I was given. How many nb size prefolds would you purchase?
I also have noticed that it is now the practice to not soak your diapers and wraps... I use Prowraps and some DSQ prefolds and have never had a problem with soaking.
I also drain and rinse the diapers and then wash them in hot water with my Arm and Hammer (no scent or dyes) detergent. I have never had a problem with smells or absorbtion with my diapers but now I think I might not be doing enough...
Should I stop soaking?
Should I add another wash cycle to my washing routine?
Thanks,
Alison

Alison,
I am not sure about quantity, as I am also stocking up for new baby due October, and have not cloth diapered a newborn. I am planning on having about 36 diapers on hand for washing every other day. I plan on using a combination of prefolds and home-made fitteds for the newborn, plus maybe some one-size pockets that I am currently using on my 18 mo dd.
I think that the fussy washing rituals have more to do with the fleece and microfiber commonly used in pocket diapers and AIOs. In my limited experience, they tend to hold on to smells and detergent residue more than cotton prefolds. I use a dry pail with a washable liner. I rinse of any poop with a diaper sprayer, and just throw everything in the pail together. When I wash, I do a full cold cycle with some Bac-out. (my machine doesn't have a pre-soak or pre-rinse option) Then I do a hot wash with with Charlie's soap and occasionally I add some Oxi-clean, with a double rinse. If I can still smell anything, I do another hot wash, maybe with a little tea-tree oil.
If your current wash routine is working for you, I would say that you should stick with it. If you are using all cotton prefolds, then you will probably not run into the fussy diaper cleaning needs that I have.
Hopefully someone more experienced can help you more!
Maria

Alison,
I'd get 2 doz of the smaller DSQs. 6-8 dirty nappies a day sure adds up and I like having a few extra.
If pre-soaking is working for you, why change? I always do a second rinse after wash, with vinegar and baking soda. I hang out on the line when I can. For this little one, we'll be drying in the dryer for the first few months. Our water pressure isn't great and the machines are getting on a bit, tho'. I'm thinking of adding lavender sachets to the dryer with them... I'll give it a go and see how we get on.
Congratulations on your pregnancy - what a marvelous due date!
Blessings,

I was wondering if it was the AIO's that might make the wash process a bit more involved. I have two hand me down AIO's and they are nice to keep in the diaper bag for the old quick change
Maria, I have done a newborn before with cloth, but I gave up because I couldn't get the night time rhythm down due my cloth diapers not fitting well into NB sized wraps I didn't know they had NB sized
I thought I would probably need 2doz... and I think I'll go with that because I have diaper doublers which fit nicely in NB wraps... I just really want to stick with it this time- the economy is so helpful with that
Nissa, I checked out your Simple Gifts blog yesterday- WoW It is lovely! I really went off on a homemade diaper and reclaimed clothing rabbit trail! I am working on sewing and would love to make my own cloth diapers... are you finding it economical?
I am totally digging the baby's due date- and we are having a boy (after two girls)
God Bless,
Alison

Ohh, I'm so glad you liked it! It's been re-designed and I'm working on adding some more useful features to it while trying to keep it un-cluttered. The re-fashioned tutorial and sewing/handmades articles are by far the most hit ones, so I'll need to put some more up!
Making dipes and covers can be more economical, depending upon your source of materials, the quality of the pattern and the skill of the seamstress. I'm fortunate to have a FAB thrift store nearby where I can find all sorts of great stuff to refashion - for dipes and for kids' clothes as well as for my own use. Making dipes takes a little practice to get a fit you like, and an absorbency you like.
Time-wise, making your own is anything BUT economical, but it sure is enjoyable. Because I often have limited time, I like having my EcoBaby dipes. They're spendy, but fit for a long time (adjustable), come with doublers, and take the pressure off having to keep up with sewing my own so that I can enjoy that process.
I'm getting into making training pants for my toddlers. Should be loads of fun.
Blessings,

I also use cloth, I did it purely for economical reasons. I use prefolds (I prefer unbleached Indian), a snappi, and a cover. My favorite covers haven't been mentioned here - I love Thirsties covers! I buy gender neutral colors....still hoping that God will send us a little boy one of these days! I have one Bummi Superbright cover, and I like it, but the Thirsties have a more generous cut for my chunky babies.
My little one in diapers is 14 months now, but I loved when she was a newborn in cloth! My babies sleep with me, and there is nothing worse than the exploding disposable in the middle of the night! I NEVER had that happen in the cloth.

I'd really love to know more of people's thoughts on Bummis.

Can I add another question- what does prefolds mean? Is it the same as fitted nappies? (I've been googling and can't find out.)

We use prefolds. Here's kind of a picture...
http://www.cottonbabies.com/product_info.php?products_id=89
except they are kind of rolled up here. They are like the Gerber ones you can buy in walmart, but mine are a lot thicker/more absorbent. I use prowrap covers, they are on the same website. It was important to me not to spend a fortune on diapers when I started using them since my main motivation was to save money! I did end up buying a couple of Aristocrat wool covers to use for older babies at night. Those are pricey, but I bought mine on ebay, and I only needed two. My 5 month old still isn't needing the wool covers at night yet...a prefold and prowrap do just fine so far. She doesn't seem to be as heavy a wetter as my son was.
