We also have Magic Attic dolls from a few years back. They are very comparible to the AG dolls. I didn't even know that they are still available. |

They aren't being manufactured anymore, but you can still find them on the internet, often for good prices. I am glad to hear you think they are comparable to AG. That's what I was hoping.

I just wanted to say "thank you" for the website link to Julies Stuff. I ordered some of the Calico Critters, a HABA chess set in a cute little tin and the beautiful Gotz 18" doll. The doll is typical Gotz quality - WONDERFUL! She's so lovely.
My eldest daughter was hoping for Josephina this year. It was heartbreaking to tell her why we can't buy from AG anymore! Boy, will she be surprised!
I plan on making some clothing similar to Josephina's to dress this doll in for Christmas morning.
Blessings,
Angela

I just purchased 4 patterns from Simplicity and McCalls......(hard to narrow down to just four!)........for the 18" dolls.....my girls are really getting into sewing, and I thought THEY could make their own doll clothes since their mom never has the time
Saint Nicholas is bring the patterns.........and I think the Three Kings may bring them fabric.....not sure yet........we have a lot of scraps!
and these patterns are always half off at Wal Mart

Chari,
Would you mind sharing the pattern numbers with us? Were you able to find historical-looking patterns?
Thanks!

You can look through the patterns on-line.
McCalls turn of the century (also has a 1st communion dress here) and McCall's colonial and 20's & 30's
Simplicity has some 1950's and prairie styles.
Butterick doesn't have as many historic styles.
I know JoAnn's Fabric is nationwide and when they have sales you can get patterns for $.99 or $1.99. That's when I buy them. Simplicty patterns will be on sale for $1.99 November 10-12.

Angela, I am so glad to see you had such good luck at the Julie's Stuff website. If we had decided on a Gotz doll, I would have purchased it there, because Julie's Stuff had the best prices for Gotz--and what a pretty doll! Prettier than American Girl if you asked me.
Chari and Mary, patterns are an excellent idea, and the clothing will be so much more meaningful to the children than those purchased in a store. These are the things that are destined to become family heirlooms passed down to the grandchildren!
Over the weekend, I was talking to my sister in law about the American Girl contraversy. She pointed out something I hadn't really thought of before, saying that she never liked AG for her girls because it teaches them to be consumers--always wanting one more thing, always needing to spend more and more money, never really satisfied. I thought this point was worth contemplating. Perhaps this unexpected end to our AG collecting has been a blessing in disguise.

That is an excellent point. I have been feeling called to become more and more detatched from THINGS lately.
That last AG catalog was glossier and pettier than ever, making it all especially hard.

Yes, thanks to the boycott, my girls won't be disappointed when they *don't* find Felicity and Elizabeth's horses and carriage under the tree! As beautiful as it is, enough already!!!

So true. My mom has made most of my girl's doll clothes. I think they are prettier and of a better quality. She made baptism gowns for their Bitty babies out of the fabric left from the gown she made me for my babies. They are so special!

You can apply online for a teacher's discount card from JoAnn's Fabric. And they do include homeschoolers.
My dd really wants to learn how to sew. Maybe this will be a good opportunity for Mom and Leah.

I just thought I'd let you all know that I received a shipment of Christmas gifts today from www.dollclothessuperstore.com. The site was recommended by Karen E. The clothes were all under $10 each and I am happy with them. They are not the quality of AG dresses or hand sewn ones, but they are great for the price. I bought pretty satin gowns for all of our AG dolls, a baptismal gown for our Bitty Baby and a pretty dress for a different baby doll for my youngest. I really think the girls will love them.
Thanks, Karen, for the recommendation!
