I must admit that I have no idea what to get the girls for Christmas now that American Girl has let us down so profoundly. What would you buy girls ages 11, 10, 8, and 5 that is fun, interesting, and wholesome? Preferably something that won't break the bank!

This really would break the bank, but check out this pioneer family from Magic Cabin. I am drooling over the log cabin, covered wagon, and other accessories.

Vision Forum has doll things similar to AG
Craft kits from Klutz.com have been a hit here - sculpy clay, paper quilling, etc.
Playmobil has cute sets my dd spends lots of time with - Victorian themes, farm, zoo, etc

Hi Alice,
You most likely already have something in each of these categories, but while at Costco recently, I saw a really nice kitchen set (Kidcraft Ultimate Wood Kitchen) and a beautiful wooden three story doll house with furniture (sorry not available online, so no link). We already have a smaller wooden kitchen set made by the same company in the same color scheme which my younger girls love. We also have a nice older dollhouse--but I sort of wish we didn't, so I'd have an excuse to get the one at Costco!

I think I'm going to go with Vision Forum and get the Evangeline doll, the Maria Von Trapp play dress and the Trapp Family book by William Anderson. I do have concerns about VF and anti-Catholicism and my plan is to write to Doug Phillips as soon as I get a chance. Doug's father is not Catholic and his mother is a devout Catholic. His youngest brother is a friend of my son's and was very involved with our homeschooled teen group until he went of to Christendom College. I know VF sells Elsie Dinsmore and that's usually a red flag for me, but I think a little more investigating is in order here.

That was my guess. I sometimes read Doug's Blog. He refers to his father often, but rarely his mother.
I like VF products and they are doing some wonderful work. I think it would be good for them to know how much Catholics like their stuff and much of the work they do.
Doug Philips is a huge influence in the Prot. hs'ing community. Can you imagine if he converted? Maybe we could all pray for this.

Please do let us know what you find. I have been blessed by VF as well as Patriarch's Path so many times.
I think that they both hold similar statements of faith, but they are sort of in competition with one another with their retail. Although I have never seen anything blatantly anti-Catholic at VF I definately know wher PP stands because they carry lots and lots of Luther!

I too would e interested to hear what you find out. I got Liberty for Maggie, witht he Maria dress and a nightie -- we'll make a bed, etc.
But I was going through the whole catalog and some of there stuff looks very interesting -- lots of things about keeping families together (incl a book about making bros and sis best friends -- not that I'd like to see!).
Thanks for any input or advice you might have.

This morning I was sharing Elizabeth's article with my dh because my 8yr dd was looking forward to receiving the doll Elizabeth from AG to be companions w/ her Felicity doll and she had plans to use her b-day $ to purchase Penny. I was explaing some of what is going on to my almost 12 yo dd and trying to be careful w/ my words...My 6 yr old ds joined in .." mom do the dolls talk about this stuff?..I don't get what your saying.... is it going to wash our brain away?"
I am going to read back through these posts in hopes of finding something to replace my dd's wishes.

I'm a Playmobil fan. The playsets are durable. Have you seen the Victorian doll house? Yes, it's expensive but it will last generations. Wood may be preferable, but this doll house won me over. At $129, it is comparable to some of the AG dolls.

I heard about these Faith Filled dolls on the Catholic Exchange forum. Then I was curious so I looked around a little further. These Catholic girl dolls are adorable but very expensive. Couldn't this look be achieved with an 18" doll and sewing machine? Everything else looks like a collectable and not something to play with. I thought there would be a little more to choose from.

Dollmarket.com has some nun dolls on sale for $10! I could get in BIG trouble there. There's also Magic Attic on sale for $29!

JoAnna, you solved my problem. I just purchased four Magic Attic dolls and four nun dolls at Dollmarket.com. It is expensive buying so many dolls at once, but, as I told my husband last night, at least now the horrible credit card bill will come in November instead of January, so we will get it over with!
I decided to go with Magic Attic because they are pretty, come with a book like American Girl, and were far less expensive than other 18" dolls I'd priced. Up until you sent the link to Dollmarket.com, I was leaning toward the Gotz Sarah's World collection (also very beautiful, but at least $30 more a piece!!!) Luckily, the price made me hesitate, and this gave me time to find the Magic Attic bargain. Now my only fear is that American Girl will do the right thing before Christmas and we'll all end the boycott--LOL! (Just kidding, I would be thrilled if they really turned around.)
The nun dolls are absolutely lovely, and for $7 each, cannot be beat! I was so enamored of those stunning nun dolls at "Aquinas and more"--this is certainly an excellent consolation!

We love the Soft Saints here!! My Leah has a great devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe so we have Her and St Juan Diego. Also St Ann and Kateri Tekakwitha. They are very nice, but certainly are suitable for actual play. The only drawback is that they are pricey.
We also have Magic Attic dolls from a few years back. They are very comparible to the AG dolls. I didn't even know that they are still available.

I have been very happy with the service at a site called Trains Galore. The prices are good and shipping over $45 is free. I was very surprised to find two orders I placed just days ago on my doorstep this morning.
In place of Angelina Ballerina, I've started the younger ones on a Calico Critters collection! My son will be getting his first starter Thomas the Tank Engine set.
It is October, and I am almost done Christmas shopping. It's all part of my Flylady kick!
