Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I read Five for Sorrow, Ten for Joy a couple months ago....it was a wonderful wonderful page-turner. If you like "Brede", you'll love this one too!

I'm reading:

The Winthrop Woman by Anya Seton ~ story of Governor Winthrop's niece, Elizabeth Winthrop/Feakes in the Mass Bay Colony. LOVE IT!

Siblings without Rivalry (again)

St. Margaret Clitherow

Real Learning (again)

Thimble Summer ~ I checked this out for a neighbor's daughter, read the first couple pages and was HOOKED! I remember reading this in jr. high or so, and loved it then, and love it now!

Laying Down the Rails

I am reading mysteries by Dorothy Sayers and I have recently discovered Rumer Godden. I just finished "In this House of Brede"...a life-changing book and a must read...simply beautiful and I finished "An Episode of Sparrows" at about 2:00am when I couldn't sleep. I am going to be hunting down more of her books...the next on my list is "Five for Sorrow and Ten for Joy" (a reference to the Rosary.)

Oh, how was Episode of Sparrows? I have that one waiting for me here. I loved both Brede and Five for Sorrow. Warning, though, it is not like Brede and though the title is a reference to the Rosary, there are some very rough scenes in the book. Keep reading, though, it is so worth it!

That's my take, as well. I found Lord of the Flies horriffic, while BNW was just ludicrous.
Instead of Brave New World, you might substitute 1984. I think it is a bit less offensive but with a similar sort of message. Perhaps it will be a gentler way to introduce the genre.

It has been SO long since I read either of these (cough, cough, um 30 years maybe?) that I'm sure I would hardly recognize most of the texts but I remember being totally horrified by Lord of the Flies also, whereas Brave New World just seemed strange, though I didn't really care for it. Obviously, I've not re-read either for pleasure since then

I can't recall whether I ever read 1984 or not, though I know its basic message.

North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell

I have a sneaky suspicion that my Devin is behind this one . I just finished *Pride and Prejudice* and have asked Devin for a break before she insists that I read *North and South* . But...I have enjoyed the mini-series .

Love,

So many people have recommended North and South to me lately and usually I try not to see movie before reading the book, but I knew I had so many books already on my list to read that I broke my rule and got the movie from the library (dh is out of town and it's a good chance to watch these movies). At first I didn't like it all, and was very confused as to why they moved, etc but it definitely grew on me. One of these days I'll still get around to reading it but I am catching up on so many classics I never read earlier, plus the occasional new best-seller, though I don't read many of those anymore. If I don't add anything new to my "to-read" list for another year I'd have plenty to do!

I am almost finished with Mary of Nazareth by Marek Halter. It is definitely a work of fiction and even twists the Biblical narratives to fit his own version of the story. As long as I remember that this is NOT the story of the mother of our Lord, it is an interesting one.

I do, however, take exception to the way he portrays many of the characters. If you read Ann Rice's Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, this one is like that and maybe even worse.

I've just pre-read dd's birthday gifts. Regina Doman's Waking Rose and Midnight Dancers. Lots of layers, I'm very glad that I pre-read these as there are some heavy modern topics in them. Topics that I haven't told dd about but I suppose at 15 it could be time. So I've decided to give them to her and discuss afterwards.
