We saw it today and also loved it. I totally agree about Mr Tumnus, and thought the White Witch was very well done. Not how I pictured her beforehand, but exactly right. I started off a little aggrieved at how they portrayed Susan, but came to feel that it worked in that it showed how Aslan brought out the best in the children. Mr Beaver was my main gripe. Not just that bit of dialogue, but the Cockney accent. A beaver? With an inner city accent? Bizarre . It also didn't match up with Mrs Beaver. I presume they did it for humorous effect, but it just irritated me. I did chuckle at "we're no heroes, we're from Finchley!", as that is where my s-i-l lives .

All I can say is I hope the Lucy is not like the one in the BBC Series... I seriously disliked her
Hi Kathryn... did you see all the smoke from the Buncefield depot where you are? Mum said they could see it up in the village...

But, seriously...why re-write the dialogue? I just don't get it! |

Now, this is one of the reasons I LIKE the BBC version of the Chronicles (altho I wished they'd done them all). They keep very close to the story and use much of the same dialogue -- as my kids pointed out when we read TLTWTW this past Fall and then saw the BBC version.
We're going tomorrow -- so today I had the kids watch the BBC version closely so that they can comment on the differences.
I'm so excited to go -- I'll let you know how I feel after

I was never fond of the BBC Lucy either, but the new Lucy was lovely.

We didn't see the smoke - Dunstable Downs in the way - but dh heard it go up. He opted to work at home on Monday as he works in St.Albans and we thought the traffic was likely to be dreadful. By the time he went into the office yesterday the fire was pretty much out.
[One of the largest fuel depots in the UK exploded on Sunday. Incredibly, there were no fatalities and I think only one serious injury. Deo gratias! The fire was spectacular, though]

We just got back from watching Narnia. I have to say for loyalty to the book, watch the BBC version. for excitement, tension and "way cool" graphics, the newer one is for you....
My 5 and 6 yodc loved it and only grabbed me arm oce or twice. Maggie, about half-way through the movie, grabbed me and said "thank you" -- I thought she meant for protecting her. She said "for taking us to this great movie, Mom".....makes you just want to hug 'em, doesn't it

Here's another Review by John Zmirak, author of Bad Catholics Guide to Good Living.
And I have some questions for you Narnia fans from my mother. At what age did your children read or was read the Chronicles? And when did they watch the movies?
And when this was introduced, was the Christian message and allegories discussed? Did you have to point out the message to the child, that Aslan was a type of Christ, or did your child figure it out? And if so, at what age?
Thanks!

Interesting questions, Jenn. i read them at 8, and I think I read them to the kids when Libby was 6, so Paul would have been...0!
But we revisit them all the time.
I was never told about the Christian message, and in fact, I was a bit nervous about it when I read them and saw the connection clearly. My feelings at the time were like those of the characters at the end of The Last Battle...is it meant for us? Is it alright? I began to think it was fine when I heard that the kids from a local Catholic school were assigned to read them. Whew!
My kids figured it out when they were mature enough, and they never had to be told. Telling can be so unfair . Moreover, there is SO much symbolism in all the books that we are still discovering some new symbol every time we reread.

My ds 7 just finished "The Last Battle" on Saturday, and then went off to see the movie with dh.
I think 6 or 7 is a great age for the books as a first read-aloud. My dd4 was really not interested in listening, although she has enjoyed pretending to be the talking beasts of Narnia in her brother's games.
I have a friend who's reading it to her 4 yo granddaughter, but I tend to think that's a bit young.
We haven't seen the BBC version, but I think we'd like to.

I did NOT have it pointed out to me when I read it the first time (around age 9?) and could hardly believe it when I heard about it. I promptly re-read the books and was completely amazed!
I don't think it needs to be explicitly pointed out to children. There is so much depth to the stories, and they can be savored without getting that layer right away. Plus, it denies them the opportunity to discover it themselves. What a treat to see a child really making sense of it!

Narnia is being released here on Boxing Day!! the 26th. After reading all the reviews we are most interested in seeing it.
In fact we haven't read it for years (we read it when the children were too young and so were turned off) Ds 10 has started reading the series and I've told the others they have to read it before we go.
