Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

1- We don't live close to parish of choice because home prices out there are out of the question.

2-"Trying to make things work" at the local parish. I've struggled with that thought myself but two points came to mind. 1)There's a limit to what can be done when the priest isn't behind you. 2) and most importantly, my responsibility is to the formation of my children's character. I have to save their souls before I have to save the parish. And I honestly feel like it's a choice between feeding your kids drab saltines and koolaid at the local parish vs. inviting them to a beautiful wedding banquet 30 minutes away. It nourishes their spirituality and awakens their senses to the Divine in a way that the watered down, happy-clappy Mass just can't do.

Wow - I am hoping that the implication isn't that dh & I, by NOT abandoning our local parish, are shirking the responsibility to our children's souls, or that somehow the Eucharist isn't just as valid. I mean, you did just call it "saltines & kool-aid."

the Extraordinary Form (which I prefer, and attended back in NC),

Rachel, where did you attend in NC? We are 12 miles from Ft. Bragg now, and are driving to Dunn for mass.
Last week we went to Sat. pm, but this week we are going to try the Sun. 8am. Since we will have to be out of the house by 7:10 am to make it on time, I'm not sure if that will become our usual time. It's hard to not go on Sunday--if we don't, it just feels like another Saturday, and we don't like that.

Laura, I don't think it was a reference to the Eucharist.. but rather just comparing the style of liturgy to a bland snack rather than a festive banquet.

And really we can nuture our children either way.. children that see their parents "fighting" for the correct form will know that correct form and why the other is wrong and learn a great appreciation in that way.

I really think that the major distinction here is that we don't stay in a parish that is a poor reflection of what it should be and just let it be.. that is what will give the kids a poor appreciation and catechisis. We need to be active and improve or help sustain the sitution so that it is a good place to raise our children.

We drive 30 minutes to mass each week. We don't live near the church because of cost (very expensive in town) and because our TLM group has to frequently change churches (four times within the past six years) and the current N.O. pastor does not like the Latin mass, so we may eventually be on the road again. Liz--yes, we went to Sacred Heart! Fr Parkerson baptized my boys a little over a year ago...

We were in Fayetteville, near Cape Fear Valley.

If you don't mind the NO, St Patrick's isn't bad (esp if you can manage to go when Fr De Candia is the celebrant--he is an excellent confessor, btw, if you can't make it to Dunn).

It was 45 min for us....and that got to be too much when DH was deployed and the boys got to the "scream whenever it gets noisy/quiet/different than what it was a minute ago/whenever they cannot get down and move" age. SIGH. SO we ended up having to go to St Pats, which isn't BAD...but it was not my first choice. Fr De Candia is an excellent, newer priest, and he is, like I said, an excellent confessor (get there early, cause his line fills up fast )...

Right now, its 20 min each way for us...which is better, but the paris isn't.

I had to trade 1100 sq ft, on 1/4 acre for 3400 on 10. The parish can be worked with, but there was no way we could have afforded to have what we have here, on DHs income, out there....

Anyway, if you want some ideas for stuff around Ft Bragg/Fayetteville, let me know--I lived there for 12 yrs.

Rachel

Thanks, Rachel. I had a feeling that's where you went! We haven't tried St. Pat's, but have been going to St. Elizabeth's (on Andrews). Nice people and priest, it's just that we feel it's a bit...relaxed, shall we say?

Were you aware of any other home school families at Sacred Heart? I have heard there are some, but don't know how to get in touch with them.

Tomorrow is the trial run at getting there by 7:45 am. Better get to bed!

Hm. I'd definitely try St Patricks, then. From what I've heard, there's a difference.

There are definitely other families hsing at Sacred Heart. I know one, for sure, although her dc are all younger than yours (dd7, then three boys, then an almost 2 yo dd, I think). I believe that another lady here (one of the Betsy's, altho I cannot for the life of me remember which one of them she is--lol) still attends there. Worst case, I'd call and talk to the secretary, since Fr Parkerson is known to be hsing friendly, many many families have come there because of that--the only mandated thing he insists on, is that he approves of the catechetical program you use (the parish uses Faith and Life, which is what we use, so there were no problems there).

I wish I could go back. He's an excellent confessor...he actually takes the time to counsel (so few do anymore, it seems). Fr De Candia does as well, esp if he gets to "know" you. He's a gem, esp considering he's only a "baby priest"--actually, I guess he'd be a "toddler priest" now--he celebrated his first ordination anniversary in May of this year...

St Pat's was only 5 min from my house when we lived in Fayetteville, and it seems odd that I won't ever go there again--its where I entered the Church...its where DH and I had our marriage convalidated, etc. Sigh. So hard to believe we're not going to go back, after living there for 12 yrs. Our boys were born at Cape Fear Valley...the other dc at Womack...sigh. I miss it, even though I am glad to be here in OK now...

The one lady I know who hs's from Sacred Heart is a good friend, and lives in Fuquay Varina. Her DH is an AF major (I think--he *might* be a captain, but I believe he's a major). They are good folks. Tall good folks (they're both over 6 ft--volleyball players)....I know that they attend the Sun morning mass--although with her DH being deployed at the moment (he does much shorter deployments than the army guys do, and so he left Tues of this last week, and I believe he will be home in August sometime), she may not be someone you will see--with so many so young, well, its nuts.

Anyway, enjoy Sacred Heart. We're HOURS away from a TLM here, and of the two choices of which parish to attend here, well, there was no way we would go to the one we didn't choose...no way. Nuh-uh. Ain't happenin.

Of course, the one hsing Catholic family I have heard of, attends that parish (they live in that town, so it makes sense), so I may never run into them--although I may call that parish's secretary and see if I can give her my info to pass along...in a state with a bare 2% Catholic population, we need to stick together....

Rachel

We drive 30 minutes in order to be in a parish with Catechesis of the Good Sheperd. Worth every minute and every extra buck in gas.

We travel an hour each way to Mass. No good choice closer.

We're about to move, so this will change, but currently we've been going to our parish -- 7-minute drive -- mostly because I've been heavily involved in the music program. The priest is a good soul and we all love him, though the overall atmosphere is large and . . . a little too casual for our liking. I find my younger children misbehave far more in Mass there.

We have often gone to daily Mass at a parish across town (about a 25-minute drive), where we're just terribly personally fond of the two older priests who are struggling along there, being faithful and orthodox in a diocese which overall isn't all that friendly to orthodoxy. The pastor was my daughter's Latin teacher this year -- they are very homeschooler-friendly and gave us space for our high-school co-op (and Father taught Latin, which really was an added blessing). Since the choir seasons has let out, we've been going more there. The atmosphere is far more reverent, and the children feel it. And since we're moving, and we happen to love these two Fathers, we're trying to see as much of them as we can.

When we move -- to Lincolnton, outside Charlotte, for all you North Carolinians in this conversation -- we'll be driving about 10 minutes out of town to our parish church, which was a major revelation to us when we went house-hunting there last week. The priest is young and orthodox -- when we went to daily Mass, we saw that the altar was set up for celebration ad orientum . . . he's not doing a Latin Mass yet, but plans to add one at least a couple of times a week. There are homeschooling families in the parish, and Father teaches a Latin class for homeschoolers on Thursdays. I had really worried about where we'd go for church, and how far we'd have to drive, with high gas prices . . . not any more. God is good.

By the way, somebody mentioned Fuquay-Varina, NC -- my best friend from high school (in Memphis) lives there! She's not Catholic, but we'll definitely be visiting her at some point, so it's good to know where we can go to Mass up that way. And if you all are heading for the mountains around Asheville, stop in and see us on your way!

Sally

We go to our local parish. Its about 10 minutes drive. There is another church with a more old fashioned mass (I do love that because it is like when I was little) which is a little further and has a better time for us but we decided to go where we "should" go by geography.

The last thing I am going to do is judge a priest. I just dont feel that is my job as a parishoner. I dont have any real quarrels with our priests at all. There are a few things that are different about our church. We have Lifeteen mass on Sunday nights which some people object to. One thing that bothers me is that we have no large crucifix on the altar and the more modern style church means the tabernacle isnt at the front. There are a ton of Eucharistic Mins (but its a large church and communion takes forever even so).

I guess Im more interested in the Eucharist than in getting really picky about the smaller elements. Our priest sticks to the gospel message in his homily and does a nice job. Maybe not extraordinary. But I find it helpful.

The nearest parish for us is about 25 minutes. We attend that one about 2ce a month. The one we prefer is 42 miles away and takes just under an hour, and costs $15 round trip in the big van. We are registered at the one we prefer and do the best we can to get there as often as we can. But sometimes its just too far to get to. We split our tithe. The one we prefer allows hsing for ccd, so this works well for us. The more local parish isn't as orthodox. Laura, this is our weird solution to the issue of a more holy mass while not abandoning the local parish. My dh feels strongly about that, too.

I'm so behind on the boards but there are definitely other HSing families in Dunn. I know at least 3, myself. I live 1 town away but we go to Newton Grove, the "mother" church of Dunn and many others around that area.

TTYL!

What a great bump, JoAnna.

When this thread was threading I didn't know the mileage. I tested it just a couple weeks ago and I really thought it was further than it is...like 5 miles.

I was wrong. It's 1.7 miles from my driveway. Guess we could walk it, huh?

Just goes to show you that Louisianians really do measure distance in hours.
