Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

AggieGal,

I know just how you feel. Please PM me any time you need to vent. Really.

Everyone,

I think all of us are comfortable knowing God has called us to our particular lives, but it can be very daunting to explain that to obnoxiously curious outsiders. 20+ years ago I wrote a travel column for our Navy newsletter (not even the base newspaper or the big spouses' club publication) and I had people stop me as I shopped to ask about travel ideas...and I had no clue who these people were...sometimes God calls us to minister to people we don't know and may never even know about, and He still works through us.

I think my two years as "Mrs. Skipper" taught me to be even more friendly, natural and open to everyone, even when I knew that as soon as I revealed my husband's job I would be treated like someone from Area 51. I also learned that I never want to be a politician's wife, LOL!

I do think it is perfectly OK to set boundaries (you know...like when total strangers want to touch your belly when you're pregnant, grrrr!) and declare some parts of your life off-limits. Particularly, in the case of parents of many children, the procreative aspects of your life. That's sacramental. It belongs to you. None of us owe explanations to anyone besides the Good Lord, our confessors, our spiritual directors and our spouses. It takes a while to get up the nerve to NOT answer some questions, I think.

Funny story...my dh is at a conference this week, and for the first time he had someone say, "Are you related to Nancy (last name) the wine writer?" Apparently this conference-goer had Googled all the participants' names and found my wine columns...my DH wasn't famous for his Navy career, suddenly, but for being MY husband.

Well, I'm just now writing since we just got our phone/internet hooked up (though I did get one late one night in a hotel with free wi/fi somewhere out west).

Rachel, I just had to respond since I knew you back when you were amazing to us for homeschooling and having your #5 while Bill was deployed. I remember wondering how in the world you did it...

With me pregnant with #5, my husband was just informed during inprocessing here at Ft. Bragg that we are the record-holders for most kids in his unit. With only 5!

I, too, am amazed at how many people think my "little" family is so huge...I think it must be the proximity in ages, and of course me being 37 weeks "big" doesn't help.

In Hawaii, we used to be in Japanese tourists' photos all the time since we had so many little blonds. At first it was weird but then we kind of got used to it, understanding that being blond was just strange to their cultural norm. I guess, sadly, having more than 3, especially so close in age, is contrary to our western popular culture.

As someone else already posted, just assume that it's all positive comments. You're a beautiful family, after all.

Blessings,
Sarah
