Tea - any of the high allergens (including peanuts and milk) are supposed to be a no-no for prior to 1 yr.. and I often see 4 yrs old recommended on the peanuts..
There is a higher chance of developing an allergy by using them early.. though of course that's not 100% gonna happen either.

Nursing from the affected side will not harm your baby. You do not have to wean because of thrush.
Sounds like you've figured out the problem!

If it is thrush, and that's what it sounds like to me, and it is deep in the milk ducts (again, that's what it sounds like to me), the Nystatin will likely not clear it up for you. You need Diflucan, for 14 days. Some docs will only want to prescribe 1 pill and tell you that it's good for a week. That is true for a vaginal yeast infection, but not so for candida that is deep within your breast. It will just keep coming back if it is not completely eradicated. Here is a very helpful read: Remedy for Thrush
I had thrush problems with my first nursling, and finding a pediatrician who knew that Diflucan was often the best way to treat persistent thrush absolutely saved our nursing relationship.
I hope you and your sweet baby get some relief soon!

I just wanted to thank you all again and let you know that it was thrush but I think I've got it taken care of. I started taking Bifidophilus and used the Nystatin ointment. I'm surprised I didn't need to take anything stronger because the pain felt so deep, but the pain is gone.
Also, I don't know why, but all of a sudden, and I mean "all of a sudden" my ds is a voracious eater. He wants to try everything he sees anyone else eating! He loves beef vegetable soup! He wont let anyone feed him with a spoon, but if I put a little pile of the veggies and meat bits on his tray he uses his hands and eats it. It's a mess, but at least he's eating. Now, I will say that probably 50% ends up in his lap, but at least we're headed in the right direction. He's just very different than the "text book" baby I guess because he doesn't want anything pureed and fed to him. He seems to want to be able to do it all himself.
He still wants to nurse primarily, and that's okay (now that the thrush seems to be gone). I feel so much better.
My dh started fasting/praying and I can't help but believe that this is a blessing from that sacrifice.

One more question - will it make my baby ill to nurse on the side that has thrush? I assume we both have it anyway but I'm wondering if the advice about not nursing on that side is due to the fact that he could get sick from the "spores" or whatever might be present in the milk. I checked Kellymom but didn't find anything in that regard.
Thanks again! |

No, you can nurse even with thrush. Wont hurt the baby at all.

Your son sounds a whole lot like my daughter at the same age.
I'm so glad you're feeling better!

So glad you're feeling better! I never had thrush until my 3rd and then I could REALLY empathize with all those moms I'd helped over the years as a LLL Leader. Just be careful as all yeast infections are easy to reoccur, especially in the summer humidity, etc.
I've fighting one in my ARMPITS of all things, right now. Ugh... no where else but there. This started when I was pregnant then went away. Now I'm slathering all kinds of things, natural and unnatural to get it gone. Tea tree oil, cetaphil, tolfantate stuff...
Cetaphil was the suggestion from People's Pharmacy and that worked on dh' athlete foot. You leave it on with socks at night, fwiw.
Keep eating that yogurt! ;-)
