Hey Mary Ellen!
If it's any consolation, Don called AG yesterday, and the guy with whom he spoke was pretty candid, saying that they were seeing an impact from the boycott.
Sure, the bracelets are selling, but are the dolls and accessories?
Wish I could advise you on the fashion show...

Right-o! Somehow, I think there are more lovely, modest young girls and their families buying American Girl dolls than feminists buying bracelets. And this is a year long campaign. I bet it will be with a lot more care and caution when they pick a new "partner." I'm especially glad that this came to light before the beginning of Nov. I'll bet Alice wasn't the only mom to return merchandise.

I have 3 dd 17,11,9. Now the 17yr dd has out grown the dolls, but the other 2 are so into them. The 9yr old was counting on getting a Bitty Baby. I told her I could purchase one of ebay and she said "sure, just don't buy from THEM. I told my girls all about the boycott and they were sad but very eager to make a stand. Each one hand wrote a letter to American Girl. First time the 2 younger ones have ever done something like this. The next Little Flower meeting they went to they asked all the girls to write. They also have penpals and asked them to write. All though this saddens me about American Girl company, I am thrilled at the action my dd have taken and keep doing. This has been a wonderful lesson, not to be part of the world and to fight the evils of this world.

I found it incredibly disappointing that my parish didn't pull out of the fashion show we are holding in spite of the financial considerations. I was pretty unpopular for a few days. I think it is a shame that Catholics are willing to overlook these things in oder that their children can be "trendy" or with the "in" crowd or whatever other idiotic reason.
How sad.
We could if all Catholics just voiced their objections as loudly as they could. My parish alone has over 25,000 members. That is a significant noise if thye chose to raise thier voices together.
As it is, the silence is deafening.... |

Mary Ellen, (((hugs))) Don't worry about being unpopular. We are called to be a sign of contradiction.
We got our new AG catalog in the mail the other day. The Elizabeth doll is nice. But Leah and I had a talk about AG and abortion. She's 8, and very pro-life. I think she understood for the most part. But she had conderns about if it was really okay playing with the older AG dolls that we already have, bless her heart.
Great idea, about sending back those tear out cards with the NO Girls Inc message!!
And a very good point about too much stuff in general, with the AG collections.

There's also a little place where you can click and vote as to whether or not the school did the right thing....

I just read the article and voted. Thus far it is 55% saying the school overreacted. I guess we aren't suppose to stand up for any of our beliefs and not oppose anything or anyone.
Oh, except for the President and war in Iraq.
Sorry...bitterness is seeping out of my pores today over several issues in the press and etc.

I know how you feel, Marybeth. Yes, we will be persecuted, laughed at, scorned because of our Faith, and love for Jesus. This is all a part of it, sadly enough.

Wow! Great job, Elizabeth. Your "biting comment" was very insightful.
And I'm sure your readership just grew by leaps and bounds.

The latest American Girl catalogue we received here does not include the I Can bracelet or info.
Has anyone heard an update about the company's policy?

Hi Viv,
There is no change in their policy. The bracelets are still being hawked on their site here.
I AM encouraged by the fact that they are feeling the impact of this decision financially. Is everyone boycotting Mattel, too? No hotwheels for my ds, 5, this year?

What a bummer. I just googled "Mattel Girls Inc." and found out that Mattel/Barbie donated over 1.5 MILLION dollars to Girls Inc. from 1999-2002.
Also, the "buy blue" website has picked up on the boycott and OF COURSE made sure they now endorse buying American Girl dolls (see this link)
Yuck!

Charles Osgood had a clip this morning about the AG/Girls Inc. boycott, and it did make an impact. He did not have numbers this year, but had last years, and implied that this year's numbers were down. AG, as speculated, will not renew its relationship with Girls Inc.
A mom who was interview for the segment stated clearly why she would not buy AG dolls (I paraphrase, as the transcript is not up yet): We don't want girls to think that abortion is a solution.
Nice and clear...
