OK, I'm starting an actual topic. Thought this would
be a fun one to roll with for a while...
What new picture books have you encountered
lately? Our booklists are always full of the old
beloved favorites, the tried and true, but it's hard to
keep up with the new titles. So much trash out
there--who has time to wade through it all in search
of the gems?
So I'd love to hear about any new discoveries you've
made...I posted a review of Boxes for Katje on
my
blog this morning . OH what a joy that book is.
And very appropriate right now for families involved
with Tsunami Relief efforts. Also great for WWII
studies.
This morning I read the girls a book discovered by
chance at the library...it'll be the next one I review on
my blog. A complete delight. It's called Fannie in
the Kitchen and is about Fannie Farmer the
cookbook author. Very funny and fascinating. The
girls and I loved it.
I'm going to keep a running list of these discoveries
at the blog...

We also stumbled upon Fannie in the Kitchen. MacKenzie, Jim and I really enjoyed it.

I'm not Tim, but some options that come to mind are: If the OT posts can be neatly moved, move them. If they can't be neatly moved, leave them for a few days and then delete them from the thread. If only part of the post is OT (and too many in the thread fall into that category), leave them for a few days and then delete the OT parts.
In order to give us practice with these issues, I will now change the topic to be back on-topic mid-post: I noted a great picture book at Barnes and Noble some time back and plan on checking it out at the library for next week's rowing of Very Last First Time. It's called Arctic Lights, Arctic Nights, by Debbie S. Miller. The nature study paintings are beatiful! She has several other books listed at our library that sound arctic/eskimo related, so I'll check those out as well.

Not off topic! 
Our latest picture book find is Michelangelo by Diane Stanley ( she did The Bard of Avon, Cleopatra and many other picture book bios).
I ordered it online and my 15 year old son picked it up from the library for me. He read it on the way home and said it was good.
I read it - it is so interesting and the artwork is real photos of Michelangeo's work amidst the artists own pics of Michelangelo painting, the Pope, etc.
I shared lots of info with everyone who came into the room  and we remembered the connection with Michelangelo and the book From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler.
We also watched the old Charlton Heston movie The Agony and the Ecstasy, based on the book of the same name, about Michelangelo and the Pope,

Okay not only do you guys recommend books that sound great, but you also recommend books that my library actually has. Now all I need to do is remember to bring several bags with me to the library.
I like the book Katje the Windmill Cat. I definately saw myself in the woman who was too concerned with keeping her house clean (and as a matter of fact so did all of my children  ).

That's so cool. You just put together a little literature unit for me there. I like hearing about what connections people make between one book and another... that's why it was so much fun helping Elizabeth with her booklist themes. If I think of anything we have read recently I'll post... well, Patrick loves the Teddy Bear Picnic right now and Aidan has a counting book with 20 Teddy Bears in it so maybe we have a bear theme burgeoning there. : ) I'm not putting in a real emoticon because last time I did I lost my whole post.

Peter Collington is a master at writing wordless books. His
illustrations are beautiful. I have only read two of his books so far,
but they were gems: "A Small Miracle" is a treasure of a
Christmas book and "Clever Cat" was hilarious, esp. for cat
lovers...They were both big hits with my dd 7, 5, and 3 yr old. I plan
on trying to gather most of his books to own in our home library!
I can't figure out how to hyperlink but just do a
search for him on Amazon and you'll find lots! I promise to have dh
help me figure out how to become more tech savvy on this message
board!

We really enjoy two picture books series by Pauline Books and Media. I'm sure you all already are familiar with them, so I'm posting these for the sake of new Catholics n'such.

This series is beautifully illustrated, colorful and ornate, and very simply written. Enjoyable for all ages.

Why Was David Brave?
Why Was Pharaoh Puzzled?
Why Was the Shepard Glad?
This series is also very simply written, simple hand drawn color pictures and quite short.

You must read _A Goodnight Kiss_ by Jim Aylesworth. It is just beautiful. I don't even know how to describe it, so I know I'm not giving you much to go on, but trust me, just get it . We've had it out from the library for so long, I guess it's time to put it on my amazon list!

Ooh, thanks, Molly! I always thrill to a new find...can't wait to check it out.
I just posted a review of a family favorite on my blog--It's Not My Turn to Look for Grandma by April Halprin Wayland. I had the good fortune to work on this book when I was an editorial assistant at Random House/Knopf, and I thought this book was a hoot at the time. Later, when I had kids, it became one of the few picture books I helped work on that actually passed the test of repeated read-alouds.

I noticed that Leonie put one of Diane Stanley's books ont the list....
We'll add her book on St. Joan of Arc!
We also read a book called _Down Buttermilk Lane_. While I don't think it was great, the illustrations in the book were lovely and lively in color...As was one we recently read called _Sleeping Bunny_. It's a retelling of Sleeping Beauty with bunnies - cute and appealing to my little ladies, but the colors - WOW! bright and vivid....these two books are not literary standouts, mind you, but I would recommend them for the colors....

This week I was enthralled with Bonnie Christensen's wood engravings in the Book _Breaking into Print: Before and After the Invention of the Printing Press_ by Stephen Krensky.
We, on this list, already cherish books, but even more so after reading this book.

Thanks to whoever recommended WHEN THE WHIPPOORWILL CALLS--my girls & I all loved it. We live quite near the southern tip of the Shenandoah Natl Park, so this book was very real to them! After reading it, we looked up a map of the park online, and then we listened to a whippoorwill song at this site. Fun!
I'm probably going to post all this to my blog, so if you're a reader of that, sorry for the repeat!
Speaking of--I just posted a review of the lovely picture book Henry Hikes to Fitchburg. Here's the link.

Little Sarah picked an old favorite off the shelves yesterday from when Jeanne was about her age--The Bunnies Ball by Annie Ingle. The illustrations are whimsical and the story itself just rolls off your tongue. I don't know if I'm allowed to do this, so don't tell on me , but I'll give you a teaser:
When the moon is full and the air is sweet
and the crickets begin to thrum...
and the fireflies flicker and raccoons bicker
and the bullfrog beats soft his drum...
slip on your sweater and sneak to the woods
and crouch in the dark on your knees.
You might just see a wondrous sight
that only the lucky ones see.
This is a fun choice if anyone is looking for a "bunny" book for an Easter basket.

Ooh - I love this thread, and this forum . My son recently found a wonderful book at the library,
Weaving the Rainbow by George Ella Lyon. The illustrations are beautiful and it is a perfect companion for Lissa's books

Lissa-
Thanks for the AWESOME bird website.  It was EXACTLY what I could never find!  We are rowing Following the Drinking Gourd (sort of) while doing a study of the Civil War, and whippoorwills are in so many of the stories. I plan on finding When the Whippoorwill Calls and my kids are going to go NUTS over the website with the sound bite! This has been so helpful!
