I am worried about this, but I don't feel I have a choice. I do have some helpers to hold babe while I shower etc. but for my peace of mind I KNOW I need to feel her breathing. Maybe I should start doing weight training now

Now my next question with these Mobys, how difficult is it to nurse in them? |
|
|
I'm getting better, but it was difficult for me at first. I had to sit down, untie and loosen the fabric when Katie was so tiny at first. I guess it should have been simpler, and it sounds like Molly had more success with newborn nursing in the Moby. It wasn't too hard to just slip her out, nurse her and slip her back in the cradle hold though.
Now though, I can nurse on the go. In fact, just the other day I was nursing her in the Moby while on a nature walk at my in-laws. They get super-ooked if they think I'm nursing. Don't know why...anyway...they had no clue. So...I must be getting better.
It can be done, Molly. But, there was a learning curve for me. It's not quite as easy as nursing in a sling to me.

Mobys are indeed comfy but there is a bit of a learning curve and they don't suffice for very heavy babies IMHO.
I sold mine to invest in other carriers that liked better. The main reason was that 18 feet of fabric was just not cohesive with my no-fuss lifestyle.
If you are looking for the comfort of a wrap but a much easier learning curve and a wider spectrum of support... I'd suggest a mei tai. Babyhawks and Kozys are some of the highest rated ones on the market. If you are even the least bit handy with a sewing machine however, you can make your own... I've made dozens of them by now after some trial and error and everyone always loves them. Here is the website I made kind of demonstrating mei tais. www.elliemaytie.com

Ellie,
I just made a mei tai today using the link you had on your website! It was really easy! I think I will make them as gifts in the future.
I have a moby and a woven wrap that I made and I really like them both, especially for little babies. But it is harder for me to carry my 15 mo old in one on my back (she always seemed to slip down in the moby--the woven was better though), so that's why I tried the mei tai. I think it will work, she's on my back right now

I've always been more comfortable in a mei tai than a wrap for all day. I get too hot in wraps! MTs still provide the 2 shoulder support, and are easy to wear front or back.

I made my dh a Meitai, I used instructions for the Mantai He just loves it, I have borrowed it too and I really like it. Instructions for the FrankenKozy I have to say that the Meitai seemed complicated to make, it was incredibly easy, and a very quick project.
I also love my Ergo. The wrap I made while preggy was a hair too small, and hard to use.... Still thinking over that problem.

I am having trouble with my Moby now that MJ is 11 months - just cannot seem to get it right.
I did try Jenn's ERGO and fell in love with it! I just cannot justify the cost right now - at least until the next baby

I have been buying cloth diapering products from Abby's Lane for a while now, I was so excited to hear that she is Catholic! I will keep up my shopping there!
As to the OP, I also used a Moby for the first 6 months and LOVED it! It was my 3rd baby and I just needed both hands! It felt so natural and perfect! Once my baby was getting to be 5-6 months old, I wanted to do a back carry. I read over Lisbet's instructions and others, trying over and over and just could not do it. Since about January, I have been using an Ergo (also purchased from Abby's Lane! yay!) and I really really love it. My husband is a domestic Catholic missionary and we have to spend 5 weeks every summer at an intensive training. We are here now, and I simply do not know how I would survive without my Ergo. My little one is 10 months old now and chunky, I tote her around like nobody's business! She likes the back carry, so do I (you can do front, back, and side in the Ergo). It's really stable and does not hurt my back or shoulders. I have no need for a stroller, bouncy seat, etc. She just stays with me! It's perfect for anything from washing dishes and housework to hiking. Love it.

I can also commiserate with the cost Marilyn! I was hesitant because of it. Thankfully, my parents gave me money for my birthday and thats how I purchased it. However, knowing what I know now, I would sell some baby equipment and buy the Ergo without hesitation.

I'm reading the exact opposite, that hip dysplasia is prevented because of the way these carriers are made, the child puts his legs in a 90 degree position around the person carrying him, instead of dangling. Of course, at a younger age, they are too little to have their legs apart because of size, so the legs are put to the side, or in froggy position in the carriers.

The Meitai is comparable to the Ergo, Marilyn.

wow, I never knew about that. I am assuming then that people need only to be concerned with the bjorn type carriers then??
I guess I have seen so many little 2,3 mo old babies with their legs spread so wide, the fabric at the bottom of the carrier almost seems to large for them, kwim? that I just believed the posts because it confirmed what looked "unnatural" to me....

ERGO!!!!!
I just got back from a trip to Europe with my little guy (he turned 6 months in Amsterdam) and he was quite happy in this the whole time- sightseeing, dinner, mass, boat rides, etc. I love how the Ergo puts the weight on my HIPS, not my back (lower back problems.... comes from 9 pregnancies, I suppose!)
I did my research before I bought. Almost bought the moby, but its difficult to wrap up a baby "on the street" (say, in Paris) and not have it dragging on the ground. I hate Snugglies, they KILL my back. I tried a sling, but he hated it and cried a lot. The ergo was more $$$, but the comfort was worth it!
