Sally - You're a very good friend!
The whole "you have to stop nursing the baby" mantra is close to my heart. I'm storming heaven!

Sally,
Praying here. My last baby, my 5th, did not gain any weight for the first six weeks of his life. He did grow a couple of inches and he got to be quite sick looking. I did nurse on demand, but my milk really wasn't there for him. I tried lots of things to help the flow but ultimately I had to supplement with formula and not feel bad about it. You should have seen the little guy suck down his first bottle. I cried because that's when I knew he'd been starving! And there was I thinking I was such a nursing pro!
In different circumstances and with different support I may well have been able to make it work, but he needed a medical clearance and so we drifted into a happy medium of formula and pumped breastmilk. He is now a 26 pound bruiser and turns one on Saturday.
I really do hope and pray that your friend's baby bounces back with the bottle feeds, and that she can continue to nurse if she desires, and that the testing is negative and not too traumatic.
Blessings,

Of course the nursing per se isn't as important as that he gets enough to eat. I'm sure that's how his mother feels about it, and she's right of course. I guess that was kind of a tangent of mine, because I'd had these thoughts on a couple of occasions, but hated to sound like a third mother-in-law or something (I am actually her mother's age!).
Also, he's a very placid baby, so it may well be that he's not been aggressive enough in demanding to be fed outside the scheduled times. My kids would have made it pretty darn clear that they were NOT satisfied, but he seems very easy to pacify, and is more interested in looking around at the world than in eating.
Anyway, they were going for the test this morning, and meanwhile she's doing the bottles. She also has to keep him completely separated from their two older daughters, ages 4 and 2 (did I say this already?), on the grounds that the girls "overstimulate" him and cause him to use up too much energy to gain weight. In an 1184-square-foot 2-bedroom house, I'm sure that's going to be a picnic. Of course the girls love him and want to play with him all the time, and he eats up their attention, so it's likely to be a frustrating week for the girls and parents, and kind of a lonely one for the little guy.
Thanks so much for your prayers. We love this family, and all my kids have been almost as invested in Edward as his own sisters have been. The thought of anything's being really wrong with him scares us all.
Thanks again,
Sally

I generally take that as a bad sign. :-/ I understand that seeing someone now is often better than waiting, though.
Prayers continue, Sally!

Sally,
I just saw this. I'm offering my prayers tonight for this family. They are blessed to have you for a friend.
