My thoughts exactly. Mary, does anyone local have a phone number for her? Are phone lines down and out too? After all the rebuilding and moving and loss...I can't even imagine... |

There are both phone and power outages - areas where the poles are all snapped, though they were able to restore a lot through the night. I don't have a number for Jennifer and they are not listed. I've contacted a friend who is the contact for that area up there to see in general if there are Cath. homeschool families who were hit. Hopefully my friend will know something and I will hear from her soon. The town where Jennifer lives sustained the biggest impact. There is a mile square area that was devastated. I was able to track down an address last night and have found that she lives outside of that area (by maybe a mile?) so I'm feeling more hopeful. Will keep you posted if I find out anything else.
The storm was massive and though we have tornados touch down in Colorado each year, ones like this are very rare - it is more typical of the type that hit tornado alley. They are estimating between 3-4 on the F scale (4's occur less than 3% of time I've heard). The main one was a mile wide and stayed on the ground basically for a 35 mile stretch.

Jennifer hadn't affiliated with the group I assumed she did but after a series of calls to various folks in the area I have tracked down a phone number. I called and got voice mail. Hopefully she will return the call. Lines are down and I was told that comcast (major internet provider) is down.
The woman I got her number from confirmed she is not in the area that was the hardest hit, but hasn't talked to her. This woman, another homeschool mom in the area was telling me about their priest who does live in that area. His home does have some damage but all around him is a lot of total destruction. He has an adoration chapel in the house. Close to him lives the youth minister and family whose home was destroyed. They are still recovering financially from very serious health issues for an toddler child.
I'll keep you updated, but I'm out for a few hours.

Finally news! I just got off the phone with Jennifer. They just got their power back (and had 27 messages!) They are fine. The actual tornado jumped their area though they had massive hail and winds. She was outside with the kids thinking this was just a thunderstorm. They didn't have any warning or know it was much more severe until the helicopters came and sirens didn't stop. She is appreciative of everyone's prayers and concerns. She said it has been hardest on her dh since he experienced all the aftermath of Katrina while she and the kids never did go back and see it. It is very similar for him with all thewreckage, emergency response and Red Cross. She will check in personally when she has internet connection back.
Andrea and Jessica are in a town that had some damage on the western outskirts but in town faired pretty well considering. So assume they are all fine, possibly just no internet. Hopefully they will check in soon too.

Hi all! Thanks for the prayers. :-) We're doing fine. The tornado was more towards the west side of town so we just got a lot of wind over here. We spent a few minutes in the basement bathroom watching a movie on the portable DVD player and I had to call my parents to tell them to take a different route. They had been visiting and left right before the wind picked up. They were heading straight towards the storm before I heard the warning and called them.

Hi there!! We finally have Internet access!
Thank you all so much for your concern and for all your prayers. We are all fine-we live in the NW part of Windsor and it was the SE part of town that was devastated. It is just horrible. It is amazing that more people weren't seriously hurt or killed.
Like Mary said above, the rectory is in that neighborhood. Father James was telling us at Mass yesterday that when he realized we were in serious danger he went upstairs to carry the Eucharist (and himself!) to safety. He then said that he felt the sudden need to just kneel right there, on the second story, and pray before Our Lord. Houses on either side were destroyed or heavily damaged, but the rectory only had some roof damage.
Please continue to pray for my dh. He really is struggling with this, especially as he helps clear debris, patch roofs, etc.
Allyson, my 5 yo, has asked me where we can move to so that we don't have to worry about hurricanes and tornadoes anymore.
Jennifer
