Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Found the haircut I want! Here's a picture. A wavy-hair haircut! Yay! Just the right length, and her hair looks like it does very much what mine does. In fact, it looks very much like my hair, albeit slightly more "groomed," maybe.

I'm sick of cutting my own hair and of feeling frumpy. Going to visit my friends at Supercuts tomorrow.

Sally

Very pretty!

I'm going for the Miss Rumphius look . Notice the young adult bun, then the bun with the hats, then the long graying hair in bed, then the graying bun, then the white bun. I even "ate porridge for breakfast...and pretty soon she was grown up."

Love,

Did it -- and I love it. My hair is even curlier than I thought it was! I got it cut slightly shorter than the picture, which I think was a good move. I don't even have to brush it -- I get out of the shower, run my fingers through it with some leave-in conditioner, and that's it.

I love the Miss Rumphius look, but my hair won't stay in a bun, and it doesn't look good on me, anyway. This was a real lift to my spirits.

And Susan, maybe I'll post a picture on my blog. I don't usually post pictures of me, figuring, you know, there are lots of nice things to look at that don't involve my face, but maybe I'll break my general rule and share!

Sally

Sally,

If your hair is curly you should check out Curly Girl. There is a book with that title and a web site. Lots of good ideas there.

All right, here's a post with a picture of the Haircut. I don't have a "before" -- I was too lazy to go looking in iPhoto for an older picture, though there are a few. But this is "after." I am really happy with it -- it looks good when I first wake up, which is one test, as is "I can wash it and it doesn't fall apart." Two enthusiastic thumbs up.

Mary Chris, my hair is very thick, coarse, and wavy -- the front will curl into ringlets when it's humid, but I can't rely on it to be evenly curly. I always used to wish that I had either really straight or really curly hair, and not in-between hair, but I think I'm reconciled to it these days. I just try not to think about it much.

Actually, the thing that tipped me into getting a haircut was that I WAS thinking about it too much. Vanity I guess is one of my besetting sins, and I usually think of it -- not as admiring how I look too much so much as being too obsessed with how I look. I'm kind of obsessive anyway. So I needed to find a way NOT to have to think about my hair, but just to be basically happy with it and get on with life. The problem, for me, with having long hair that needs to have something done to it is that I spend too much time and energy worrying about what I'm going to do with it (because it does not easily cooperate with being put up, as I said), and it becomes a kind of enslavement. So for me, this was a way out of that, and it's a great weight off, literally and metaphorically.

So, anyway, end of story!

Sally

You look awesome...it really is a perfect style for you, Sally! Thanks for sharing.

I trimmed my hair differently following these instructions for how to layer cut your own hair, instead of cutting it straight across. There is a little difference that is enough change for me right now .

Sally, you look great! I love the cut! The basic premise of Curly Girl is that curly hair needs lots of conditioner, and little shampoo. I don't use shampoo on my hair at all, unless I go two days without washing it .

After years of wearing my hair short, and I mean it was short, over my ears short....I am now growing it out. I hope to have enough to cut and donate next year. I hope I will be able to cut and donate when the time comes, I really am enjoying it long...ish.

Aw, thanks again, all. Yes, I try to go sparingly with the shampoo, too, Mary Chris -- I had read that someplace at some point. And I love this Garnier Fructis leave-in conditioner -- my daughter, whose hair is even curlier than mine, and I both use it daily, whether we've washed our hair or not. The label says "Sleek and Shine," but it makes our hair curlier, which we like.

Angie, I'm going to check out your link for future reference -- it's always good to know how to do these things.

Anyway, thanks for all the compliments, ladies!

Sally
