I use the biokleen detergent that I got from Julie Howard at Juliestuff.com. I use it along with the bac-out. I like the way it cleans and there were no reactions on my dds skin. I do add vinegar (in the fabric softener slot) to help get rid of the soap and follow with an extra rinse. I think it is because of the water here, but I would find that the vinegar would leave an odor if I didn't add that extra rinse.
I haven't had one in diapers for awhile...which is kinda weird...but! I will have to purchase some brandy-new ones soon. I don't mind doing the diapers at all...now is THAT weird?
HTH!

I had been using BioKleen for a while from Julie for all of my laundry but didn't think it got the clothes very clean. (I have major laundry issues as a whole!)
I will try stripping the diapers again. I have the baby in disposables today until his skin heals.

After about a month of pocket diapers, I am still having one big problem. My two in diapers, 2 yrs and 6 months have both had a reaction either to the diapers themselves or the detergent.
It is like they were burned, like a sunburn, and then started peeling. I thought it was because I was washing in my homemade detergent of Fels Naptha, washing soda and Borax. I would do a full second wash in Dreft and then one more rinse. But I haven't used the homemade stuff in a couple of weeks, and they kept getting sore, just not as bad. I bought Allen's Naturally detergent and they are STILL getting all red and then peeling. So, I am thinking it must be the diaper.

When I first tried pockets, they were given to me by my sil and I was using the same homemade washing soap as you- and it did give my dd a rash. I would recommend stripping them very well and then just using the Allen's detergent. I am currently using Fuzzi Bunz and BumGenius 3.0 with no rash problems (except a little heat- related redness if she is playing outside and sweating). I currently wash them in BioKleen.

I tried the BioKleen liquid first, and wasn't very impressed with it. Now I am using the Premium Plus powder, and am alot happier with it. I use it with Bac-out with the diapers, and I find I can use less than the recommended amount on our clothes. I am now debating between trying Charlie's Soap, or buying the BioKleen in bulk for a significant savings.

Donna Marie, if that is weird, I'm certifiable! I love to wash, even hand wash, hang out, and fold diapers. I love to change them, organizing them, and sometimes, when I'm feeling really sappy, I just open up the drawer and look at them. I LOVE smelling them as I take them off the line or out of the dryer. We currently have a 'cute' drawer - the top drawer of various tiny little totally adorable newborn diapers and covers. I open it often and just look...
Yep, I'm insane!

THAT is what I use...I should have been more specific. I get it in bulk every six months or so...I love not running out all the time of detergent.
God love you!

This is so sweet, but it brings me to another question- off topic, of course
How do you organize everything when you have more than 1 in diapers, and where do you keep it?
The changing table with everything on it is in the 17 mo room, who will soon be moving in with the big girls, and there will be no room for the changing table. The baby will be in our room, and we usually put the changing table in there, too. Huh. I hadn't thought of this until now.

My changing table is actually in on the main level in a room off the foyer. I keep thinking that it isn't the best choice aesthetically, but it sure is convenient with two in diapers!
Now,back to my diaper saga... I stripped the diapers (I think ) and then only used FB on the baby. The overall redness is gone, but he is still getting very sore along where the elastic part rubs between his legs.
Is there a more trim diaper that might not rub and irritate his skin? He is very chubby.
Also, (asking again) what diaper cover do you all recommend if I decide the pocket diapers don't work for us?

Molly - I like the Prowraps covers for fit and holding in the goo, but overall, I've fallen in love with my Swaddlebees AIO's. They're very trim little diapers, but I'm not sure if that is good on a chubby little guy. I will warn that it took SEVERAL washings for them to be absorbable enough to do the job, and I had really given up on them at first. They're my hands down favs with the Fuzzy Bunz pockets right behind. My little Katie is trimming down now, and I appreciate the trimness of the Swaddlebee.

I keep my diapers (okay, the baby's diapers ) In a large dresser in the living room. I had a lovely changing table, and had visions of actually using it and it looking pretty one day - but I freecycled it. the dresser fits the livingroom, it's has very deep drawers, and i change the baby (both of 'em) on the floor.
as for covers if pockets don't work, i like bummis or thirsties if you don't want to use wool. wool is generally not trim anyway, but very very good for nighttime and red bottoms.
jennifer, i can't imagine a diaper as trim as swaddlebees working on a chunka baby or a little boy. mark is both, and the crotch is so narrow that if he was, um, 'pointing' slightly one way or the other, watch out!

I tend to agree, Lisa, but I thought I'd mention them since Molly asked for trim. But, I'm glad you chimed in with the little boy perspective. Isn't it amazing how you shift your thinking and completely forget about how it was with the little boys while you're focused on challenges that the little girls face in the diapering arena? But, it's true - a little guy pointed the wrong direction would spell disaster in this diaper.

Have any of you used a Bum Genius 3.0 one size on a potty training age, 30+ lb toddler? I have six that I am using with my 24 lb, 17 mo dd, and I really like them, but I just don't know that they will fit through potty training. Maybe as she thins out they will continue to fit, but the rise seems like it would be pretty low on a 2-3 yo. Of course, they will fit the new baby, but then I will be back to buying more of something else for her.

Right now I have BG3.0 one size, Fuzzi Bunz, and Thirsties Pocket AIO. I would say that the Fuzzi Bunz have the softest, most easily stretched elastic. I haven't used the Thirsties, they were too small for dd, so I put them away for future use, but the elastic on them, and the BG seems to be more firm (I think that is the right word?)
Maybe your son could use the next size up? I could see how the elastic on any diaper could rub, if he is crawling.
Hopefully someone else with more experience than I have will have some good ideas.

Maria, I have a few BG 3.0 that I am using on my 30lb. 11 month old and my 25lb. 2 year old. The BG fit my slender 2 year old much better than my 11 month old. I think if you have chunky potty learner, they might not work well. Jennifer asked about the velcro on these and I think this is very very well made. It has a nice give to it, but still quite sturdy.

If you decide that the pocket diapers aren't working, we use the Mother Ease covers and they work great. We use the Ecobaby diapers and for the first year of dd's life I would have enthusiastically (did I spell that right?-it looks weird) recommmended them, but then over the past few months they have fallen apart. The diaper part itself is fine and works great, but the edges (like the casing for the elastic that looks like bias tape all the way around) are shredding. I contacted the company and the lady that responded said that it was probably caused by hanging them in the sun to dry I think that is crazy and so did Julie (who I bought them from), but anyway I don't know if they will last through dd, much less anymore babies. And I was hoping they would last through 2 or 3.
Sorry I am rambling , I meant to just say that I like the Mother Ease covers.

Oh I forgot to add that I like doing diaper laundry too. The diapers are the only thing that I can hang out that doesn't stink when I bring them in. And I love seeing them blowing in the wind on the line.
