Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

A little tangent - has anyone read any of Maud Hart Lovelace's other books like..
Early Candlelight?

My library only carries the Betsy-Tacy series and I was just wondering...

I have it but haven't read it. Need to remedy that!! I'll let you know.

I can see it being more possible that a small press could acquire subrights to publish those books, but again it would probably be hard to recoup costs. The sad reality is that if a major power like HarperCollins can't move the books, the market isn't strong enough. As much as we love them and feel strongly that this kind of literature should be in print, publishers will only print what they can sell. Booksellers (at the major chains) aren't interested in B-T and LH anymore. What sells is Hannah Montana and High School Musical. (I was at a public elementary school the other day and passed a poster for the Scholastic book fair. The only three books featured on the poster were Pokemon tie-in, Hannah Montana tie-in, High School musical novelization.)

I was thinking more along the lines of a non-profit or university type press where profits are great but they also publish books that don't make a ton but fulfill a part of their mission.

I worked for an academic non-profit publisher for a while, but children's books aren't really their market, though, they do publish a few. It would be an interesting mission for someone to take on, though.

Even a print-on-demand option seems like it might work. The face of publishing is changing so rapidly. It really is possible now for publishers to bring readers books on demand, on a small scale at least, in a manner that eliminates the huge expenses of warehousing costs (one of the main reasons books are remaindered--if they aren't selling RAPIDLY, it's cheaper for a big publishing house to dump the copies than to keep them in storage, filling small restock orders...Harper always remaindered my hardcover editions after the first year, even though the paperbacks were selling very well).

But I don't think the major houses have embraced the new media options yet. :) What is working beautifully for Lulu ought to be (seems to me) feasible for HarperCollins as well, but it's a pretty alien idea to suggest allowing customers to order, say, Betsy Tacy books via print-on-demand. Some of the big houses are just beginning to experiment with new avenues, and we'll see more of it in years to come, but real change is probably years away. (And may shift more toward digital books than print-on-demand...will be interesting to see.)

I know I have read digital books online not available at our library. Right now, this is mostly an option for public domain books, but it seems feasible that publishers might start exploring this. I know there are companies that provide digital book access to libraries, but I haven't really seen much come out of it. It seems to be more of a research tool. I would imagine that most people still like to hold a book. I do, but if the book is out of print, its better than nothing. I could print it out and stick it in a binder for the cost of a new book
