Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Nina,

I'm the biggest Ergo fan in the world and ours has been used every day--sometimes for hours a day--for three years (on two different kids). If your baby still wants to be held all the time in a few months I would get one absolutely. But for right now on a little one who want to nurse I'd go with a soft carrier.   You can use an Ergo on the front with an infant but it is really not as nice and comfy as a soft carrier.

Susan

Yes, it's not as good at the infant stage. I was ready to chuck it as it was so frustrating. Definitely not for nursing.

I have found that Babywearer site a little overwhelming. What's helped me is this site which has the carriers in the different categories and I can visually see and compare them. If I want more information, then I Google the brand name and pull up the main site for info.

I wish I could just say -- get this one, but there are so many different kinds to serve different tastes and needs it's mind boggling.

Thanks, Books! One more vote for the Ergo! can you use it with infant?

You can, but it is best used with a child about 15 lbs. I was too cheap to buy the infant insert for the first 4 months, which basically makes the Ergo into a modified sling design for the newborn. I stuffed a receiving blanket under my newborn's bum and then used it as a front pack instead of as a sling. I don't generally use a carrier in the first 8-10 weeks anyway, so I only had about a month to wait for him to grow into the Ergo.

I have to vote for the moby. At first I thought it would take too long to get it on, but after a few tries, I can get it wrapped around myself pretty fast, and it holds the baby nice and tight against me. I really can be hands free if needed, and the baby is pretty happy. The moby comes with an instruction book, too. God bless, Nina.

Nina - I looked into this a lot with this baby too! I needed something comfortable for me and baby, easy to wear, and easy to nurse in.

I like two baby carriers for different reasons.

The Moby Wrap...I absolutely love this carrier. Like others, I was a bit intimidated by the yards of fabric at first, but the book that comes with the wrap explains how to put it on quite well and it really is easy! It is soft and I started wearing Katie in it when she was 3 days old. It is nice and secure, and is still my preferred carrier of choice if we are out shopping or I'm doing a lot of walking because she is so secure and snug in it. I love the different ways to wear the baby, and I can nurse in it - though not as easy as I can in a sling...

...which brings me to my next favorite carrier...

The Maya...I bought 2 - an original unpadded, and the new very slightly padded Maya. I love them both. Prior to the Maya I had a highly padded sling which was difficult to wear, difficult to get the baby in and out of, and impossible to nurse in. I knew I wanted an unpadded ring sling. It has been great. (The new slightly padded one only has a very light padding in the shoulder area and is still very easy to wear and nurse in.) Yesterday, Katie spent the entire day in the Maya. I spent about 5 hours at Vanderbilt seeing several doctors - in and out of labs having bloodwork done, parking garages, waiting rooms - and I had her tucked into the sling the whole time. I nursed several times during the day and no one knew! The way she is positioned in the sling allows for very discreet nursing (I even nursed while walking to the parking garage) and you can bring the tail of the sling up for extra coverage as well. She was content, and I was relaxed because she was close to me, comfortable, and I knew I could nurse her anytime she asked without sitting down and taking out a blanket for a drape (I don't mind doing that, but in public some people get a little weird if they think you're going to breastfeed right in front of them even though you're completely covered by a blanket.) I knew with all of the medical appointments yesterday I wouldn't have the option of running out to the van to nurse.

I keep one Maya in the van, one Maya in the house, and bring the Moby wrap everywhere. Ok..so recap...the Moby is extremely comfortable and I like it for the security it offers a new baby and the completely hands free opportunity it affords me, the Maya is a wonderful sling for general baby wearing and is so easy to nurse in.

HTH Nina! Good luck with the decision - I know all the choices are dizzying!

YOU ALL are the BEST!

Thank you endlessly for your posts....a MAYA it is---- for NOW!

But I am sure I will want to try the Moby after all (and I *think* I can borrow one from a pal.... ) and eventually the Ergo.   I've heard a lot about it from Above Rubies....a site/magazine that is very pro-breastfeeding, pro-large family, pro-homeschooling, pro-simplicity, and natural living (but not Catholic)...and now from you.

Oh and as far as how warm they are.. I survived wearing the maya (and baby) all last summer.. swim meets (outdoors all day) and all. Obviously, wearing a baby will be warmer than not.. but the fabric breathes well enough that you aren't sweltering much more than otherwise.

Another tip about mixing the heat and the Moby... I live in TX and it's already hot!! I sometimes wear a nursing tank under my Moby. The kind that aren't layered but instead you just pull the snap down from your shoulder and start nursing. The Moby covers you up really well and you don't have to bother with hiking up your shirt from under the Layers of Moby.

Another option for dealing with the heat in a wrap is to use strap carries. Not quite as supportive, but not as much fabric coverage either.

a friend has a borrowed sling (ring) carrier that is made of mesh/athletic type maerial. it is SO lightweight, breathable, and stretchy, too!!
I think originally it was sold to be used in the water, but it is so breathable, yet strong, that she is planning on using it all summer long. problem is, we can't track down who made it? it has "Gabriel" on the somewhat faded tag...
I've read about the ergo's being a problem with under 1's with hip displasia....???
