whoops, sorry, i meant what i am *growing*. i planted the garlic and onions in the fall.
i'm planting the other things now.
Egyptian walking onions
this is my first year growing them so i have no idea and am quite curious to see them walk.
my peppers were out before we left, but now i don't know if they survived the sudden cold again.
Jenn, 52 heads just because it worked out that way. I think I planted 60+ but so far I've got 52 up.

Since I've got a newborn, I'm going to keep this year's garden simple. I don't have my own tiller so I have to hoe and hand weed. I'm going to skip doing seedlings and just buy tomato plants, and probably some pepper plants, too. I think I'll do cucumber this year and try canning some pickles. I haven't thought much beyond that, I just want bushy things to keep the weeds from going nuts. I might go ahead and do carrots for dd1 (she's a carrot fiend!) and have the large part of their care be her duty (weeding around them and thinning, etc). Possibly zucchini again even though I still have some shredded in the freezer from last year! I plan on planting a bunch of garlic this fall, I haven't done so in the past. I'll probably get some onion sets, too.

I have a cherry tree and a peach tree, too. My peaches are becoming more mature, I noticed last year (much bigger than the first couple years we were here!)
I can NOT get my cherries, though :( The tree is HUGE, way too big for me to get a net over, and the darn birds swipe them before I get a chance to get any. Any tips on that?

Sparrow - try pickling your zucchini. I did it last year with the GIANT zucchini seeded and cubed with Mrs. Wages bread and butter and they turned out great. I'm going to try doing a dill pickle this year b/c zucchini have been so much easier to grow than cucumbers for us.
I have rhubarb, raspberries, garlic and onion coming up. We have mulberry trees, an apricot tree, and a juneberry / serviceberry tree. Our apple tree is not growing because we have a problem with cedar apple rust, but I'm hoping to plant a pair of pear trees this year. We're also going to plant tomato, bell peppers, zucchini, and green beans. I really want an herb garden and a salad garden, but we're re-siding the house this spring, so I'm sticking to (our) basics.

Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, tomatoes, peppers (mostly hot for dh!), and maybe zucchini and an herb or two. Dd came home yesterday from her mother's helper job with a gift from the 3yo she watches - a very small canteloupe seedling - so I guess that will go in the ground too.
I was thinking of trying a bit of lettuce, but then I read what Jenn wrote about lettuce and our hot summers here.
Oh, and roses and other yet-to-be-determined flowers for our deck window boxes.

Kristie - check out "All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space" by Mel Barholomew. FORGET his OLD books... go for the ALL NEW version because he has it down to a science!! We had a HUGE garden before and are going for his way now.
Our garden consists of tomatoes, spinach and various lettuce plants, pickling cukes, melons, beans, peas, corn, carrots, garlic, and of course sunflowers along with other flower varieties!
Oh, how fun the family garden!

I second this advice. The newer book is hands down easier to follow directions.

Just an herb garden this year. Kayleigh and I bought some basil, greek oregano, lemon balm, and mint plants and we also have lots of little seedlings to get started. Mark bought a couple of tomato plants.
I'm afraid the main garden didn't get off the ground this year.. Corey went to till my herb garden and the string was broke. He replaced it but still couldn't get it running. Probably needs an oil change. I can adapt the herb garden without a tiller but not the big garden. The herb garden is a small bed by the house and will have mint for ground covering and the other herbs will be in stone planters. Easy management.
Annie and I picked out new flowers for our flower path under the oak trees..
Truly, the herb garden and flower garden are areas I can handle. I need the help of the family to do the big family plot. I'm not ruling out next year.

I am clueless when it comes to gardening, but since my girls desperately wanted one this year, I caved. We planted seeds of tomatoes, strawberries, cauliflower and carrots, but nothing is progressing except the tomato plants. I'm thinking of just buying the plants and skipping starting from seeds this year. We also want to plant onions, and corn. We are in N VA. Does anyone know if this is a good time to get these in the ground or am I too early? I just don't want to be too late. I'm also wondering if I need to add topsoil once I get the ground loosened up?
Like I said, I'm clueless . Any help for my "horticulturally deficient" self would be appreciated.
Thanks,
~Tina

WE planted the first 150 squares of our garden today...two more beds that size to go! This one alternates sweet corn, cucumber, watermelon, canteloupe, spaghetti squash, summer squash, and zucchini squash...there are marigold and nasturtium around the perimeter. I can't wait to see how it grows. We invited our priest over to bless the garden on the feast of St. Isidore, I hope it works.
Tomorrow we'll work through the second bed, I think. If I can move.
