Thought I'd ask folks to chime in about which historical period or periods you will be covering next year.
My ds has decided he wants to do 20th century history, using The Century by Peter Jennings which we have in book form and on tape, plus adding in a bunch of living books-preferably at least one per decade.
What will YOU be doing???

Haven't asked my ds yet, but I would actually like him to cover 20th century in much the same way as your ds Theresa. (He has read a few wonderful 20th century novels this past year or so already- The Endless Steppe, Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze, Homeless Bird). Would love to see how your plans come together Theresa (we have enjoyed lots of ideas from your blog!)
As a family I think we will still be going on the Middle Ages- just started Ivanhoe and that will take a while. Though it is funny that when we studied medieval times last time with the older set they were so into it, but my younger set doesn't seem as interested. I think I need more visual stuff for them instead of just all the lit. the olders and I enjoy!

Okay, so this is exactly the topic of the blog-post-in-progress that I am working on right now.
I'm not sure!  I keep making decisions, and then promptly changing them (WP Sea & Sky? SL Core 3 American History?...or maybe Core 1+2 World History?....aggg...I think I have it narrowed down to those...and then I start with the "I-could-pull-it-together-myself" - but I know that it has never worked before... 
I would like to hear what others are going to do!
oh - and my oldest did 20th Century this year (using SL300 loosely). It was good!

My oldest two will be studying the 20th Century using SL 300 (over two years because I have many Catholic books to add in). My middle ones will study Rome during the Christian period using History LInks and many read alouds. I will probably do SOTW Vol. 1 with my youngest ones. Karen

Working on the plans, but both boys will do RC History starting at the beginning. My 2nd will be doing MODG Kindergarten - which has for religion reading the Old Testament, so we're combining the two subjects a bit. We'll see how far we get!

Since we're moving to the "cradle of history" (at least that's what the Southerners think  ) ... in Virginia, I thought we'd do American history over the next two years so we can really delve into the whole colonization and establishment of the govt from Jamestown to Yorktown and probably end the year with the Civil War. I want to do lots of field trips and projects so that all 3 (currently ages 5, 8 and 9) can really "own" all this ... and understand why our nation is so different than others ...
I'm thinking to snag some stuff from Winter Promise (including their older students' stuff and pulling the American stuff for the appropriate time period in their Sea, Sky and Space curriculum). I'll also use things from Sonlight and Homeschool in the Woods. I'll use A History of the United States and Its People by Edward Eggleston (it's very CM-y!).

We aren't too exciting over here...but hopefully not too dull.
Oldest dd who will be 8th grade next yr will use Mrs. Carroll's Christ the King Lord of History as a spine. I have been trying my best to read my way through it. I've been adding a variety of nonfiction and some historical fictions into the mix to go along with different chapters and such along the way.
She also will be finishing up her third year of 20th century American history. I decided the 20th century never gets enough "play" time, so I have split it into thirds, she did the first third last year, 2nd third this year, and 3rd will be next year. I don't have a spine...just a bunch of various nonfiction books and some of Joy Hakim's History of US and I love to use the Learning Through History magazines!!!
My 3 ds's, 6th, 4th, 3rd grades will us Sea to Shining Sea as a spine and then I'll supplement with various other goodies dependent upon their ages. I did that with my dd, but I'll need to add as I'm including the youngers along with it.
That's it so far!

Us too. Back to the beginning again. This will be the second time we've used RC History's Connecting With History. My 7th grader has been through the program once (when she was in 3rd grade,) but this will be the first time for my 3rd grader. I think my preschooler will enjoy the Bible stories with my 3rd grader.

We're continuing chronologically from where we are now. At least, that is my plan.
Next year I wanted to go on to the Age of Exploration with my ds age 12, and go into a study of American history. I don't know how long it will take, but I want to go all the way up through the 20th century -- if that isn't until the year after that, fine 
Tentatively I am thinking of using This Country of Ours for a resource for history stories, along with various encyclopedias and history books we have around the house.
I have a couple of American history books for the younger ages and hope to bring my then 1st graders -- my special -needs 9 year old and his younger siblings -- in on an exposure-level.... just learning a few of the basic stories, songs, landmarks associated with our country -- maybe a geography notebook or something like that.

We are wrapping up our year from Revolution to Civil War, so next year is post-Civil War to present US History. My boys are very excited! They can't wait for WWII.

We'll finish up using Diana Waring's Ancient History and then we're going back to Sonlight- doing SL100 which might seem funny for Australians but the boys are half- American!
Only one boy will be doing that though; the other will continue my sort-of reading plan through Story of the World 3 and 4 then on to DW Ancient History before getting to SL.
Oh goodness, who knows? I could change at the drop of a hat!

We will be doing the 2nd half of A. History Civil war to present. We will use mostly living books with a Catholic text as a spine.

Pretty much doing "modern" history a la Sonlight too.
We are just starting the Prairie Primer now, and will do a lot of that over the summer then start weaving in Sonlight's Core 4 (Civil War to the present).
And I'm NOT going to reread this thread and tempt myself with a bunch of wonderful NEW IDEAS.

we are going to do american history!
we did it very unschool this year. mostly read books form the library and an occassional documentary or field trip as it came across...
we intend to be more diligent, or maybe focused is a better word, about history and science next year.

we'll be doing American history part 2...we're on Lewis and Clark now and plan to do light study of the War of 1812, Texas independence, the Trail of Tears, and Southern life over the summer, then dig deep into the Civil War and Westward Expansion the fall.
In the spring we'll delve into American inventors, immigration, and the presidents of the modern era, as well as a little study of famous national landmarks.
I'm excited for this as American history is one of my favorite things to study and my nine year old is beginning to feel quite the same.
