Yes!
Our trip to FL to visit my dad (haven't been down there in 6 years,) is cancelled.
If houses were selling, dh would love to move closer to his office (about 30 miles away- he bought a cpa firm.) And he has even said he does not care for "that side of town." We are definitely west Detroit suburbanites!
Even my son and one of his buddies decided to take turns driving to school to save gas!
Dh asked me to make a plan for all the places I need to go, and make it "driving day," once a week. No more spur of the moment trips to the library or the metro park. We have an Expedition which downs gas like nobody's business, but we got it cheap and need all 8 seats when ds is home from college. Can't afford to even think of another auto for a year or two.

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I paid 3.45/gallon yesterday. I originally had $45 a week budgeted when we traded in our lone car for a mini-van in November. (Our Accord usually used about $40/week.) Yesterday, though yesterday a fill-up was no longer covered in the budget. It was very depressing; especially since we had to do a mid-week fill-up at all due to chauffeuring an out-of-town guest this weekend.

My husband drives the van to and from work, but we try to do our grocery shopping on Sundays after we drop the kids off at Granny's because the cheaper grocery store is over by her house, which is 25 minutes from us. Of course, now I am down to weekly visits to the midwife, which is now 30 minutes away one way. When I deliver the hospital will be at least 40 minutes, depending on traffic (but my midwives don't deliver at the hospital five minutes away). I dread to think how much gas we will go through while I'm in the hospital.

If you want to get really depressed, watch the documentary "Who Killed the Electric Car". If that technology had been continued instead of squashed...if wishes were horses...

That's what I have, Stacy.

I'm looking at a Ford Freestyle for my next vehicle. It seats 7 total. (Has a full-two seats in the back which can be pushed down for lots of trunk room or put up for larger families and still has more trunk space than my Expedition.)

I've driven one and it rides well and the gas mileage is great on it . I fell in love with it and wish I could afford the car note. I'm at a point in my life where the two older ones drive their own vehicles (and pay their own gas and insurance) and the middle child just turned 15 so he doesn't usually want to go on errands or the Children's Museum and such places with us. It's usually just me and the girls. Even with all of us the Freestyle would work.

I know for some families they need the larger vans and such to seat everyone. I'm feeling like a "small" family again.

I agree, Lisa. That's the silver-streak in this, right?

LisaR wrote:
Biking to work is great, we walk to Mass, etc. Just if anything for our own family it is freeing to "prove" that we do not need to rely on gas so much.

This isn't so easy with those of us who live in the country though I agree that walking would be good exercise for all Americans. We don't live that far from our church but I don't see walking every Sunday to church in the heat of summer.

Even Laura and Mary rode in Pa's wagon to church.

My father remembers walking with his grandmother from her house into town (Broussard, LA). She would take him and her basket of eggs and walks miles into town to sell and purchase her week's supply of coffee and sugar and such.

Anyway, let's turn the conversation abit and focus on what we are doing (can do) to relieve our dh-provider's stress-level concerning gas issues? How can we cut back?

[ETA: I know situations and solutions will vary with each family.]

I am greatly in need of upping my walking, so my *grand* idea is to walk to the grocery and other local stores, sort of like, in my romantic mind's eye, like I was in France or Italy, marketing daily. I am picturing Belle here, walking down the street saying "bon jour!"    My neighbors will think I am nuttier than they already do!
Unfortunately? it is just here in MI, walking the concrete streets of a '60's-built neighborhood, not centuries old buildings. Sigh!

One other thing I have done is to slow to 65 on the expressway when I go to get ds from college. I can't do that until I get a bit out of the metro area, because I would probably be rear-ended! I really can't believe how fast everyone still drives, even as I hear whenever I am out, how the prices are really contributing to the financial pain of so many here.

I sure wish we had some mass transit, but this is Detroit, home of the automobile!

God Bless,
Stacy in MI

I think for my family, it is a re-look at needs vs wants. We NEED food, clothing, shelter, medical care, spiritual care.

anything other than that (for my family) is a want, really. I forgot to mention that I changed my mind about going to the homeschool convention a few hours away. I am still planning on buying what I would have there, but paying shipping is still way less than the gas and conference registration fee.

We are not using the heat anymore this season, even though it is still in the mid 40's. (yuck, this winter/cold spring has lasted FOREVER!!!)

We are eating meatless 3x per week.

We will go to 7am Mass most Sundays so we don't sweat to death on the walk there and back :) and in the summer early am Mass works nicely for us anyway

We are really ok on clothes for now , which is nice, and just today I sold about 100.00 worth of Maria's clothes (hanna andersson stuff that I "find" at garage sales, misspelled auctions, etc) and that money went right into the clothes account/envelope.

My goal is to have at least 2 months straight of no heating or coolong costs, so April 7th- June 7th. I think that is very do-able!!

Here in IL if you earn under 100,000 you automatically qualify for family medical care. we have gone on and off of this, and now some of us are "on" as our insurance recently climbed to 800.00 PER MONTH for our family, there are also some new prompt clinics where any care is just 35.00 out of pocket. so, we cancelled out health care through dh's job, and some of us are uninsured and some are on the IL state plan. (I know this is controversial but this is what we are doing)

Line drying clothes, unplugging as usual , etc. my struggle is there really isn't a whole lot my family personally can do to cut back much more. My boys are eating us out of house and home, what can I do?
ds almost 15 eats an apple, a banana, an orange, 1/2 of a 32 oz carton of yogurt, two big bowls of oatmeal, 2 sandwiches, any leftovers, and much much more and that is just breakfast, lunch, and snacks!

See, Stacy, I can DO that on I 74 here in IL, but when we were in Ann Arbor area, on I 94, well, forget it!!! I still can't believe I drove about 80 on there and thought nothing of it!! here, I stick to 65 and there are STILL those going slower than I am !!!

But, this is one of those things that makes my husband feel like he's not a good provider...so I don't talk about it, though I think about it...

PS
1. I am currently SELLING any book which we have not used in 12-18 months, and have promised to dh that I will not be "filling up the shelves" to replace the empty spots = using the library/bookmoblie more efficiently

2. I am planning on a bigger GARDEN this year!!

3. I've also been on WIC on and off over the years. they have drastically reduced what you "get", at least here in IL.
we get 4 gallons of milk per MONTH for example, 2 dozen eggs per month, 4 cartons of juice per month, 36 oz of cereal, and 1 lb of cheese. I think that is it. oh, a thing of PB?? I am not complaining at all, and am grateful for the help, but for most of our families, it does not make much of a dent...

We lives three miles outside a small town, so we don't have *that much commuting to do, compared to others/what we used to have to drive. So in light of that:

Consolidate trips into town (3 miles, easy to "just go" unnecessarily).

Consider having my son take the school bus home (so I don't have to pick him up, although I would then lose 30-45 minutes a day with him).

Consider buying a smaller car.

Consider investing in a hybrid car when we do decide to buy a new car.

Use his smaller car for errands when it is available.

Keep cars well maintained so they are more efficient.

Carpool to kid activities with other families.

With all the financial setbacks we've had in the last month, we are doing everything we can to cut expenses.

The nearest town/store is 15 miles, so walking is out of the question. I have to head to Saint Paul every other Friday, and I drive by every big box store you can think of, so my shopping is limited to that day. The kids attend Religion class on Wednesdays in town, so we can always leave early and run errands. We have 81 acres, so I can just keep adding more gardens. We have plenty of wildlife roaming around, so we never have to buy meat. I get eggs from a gal down the road.

I have 8 boxes of books to take to halfprice books on Friday to sell. I had to PROMISE that I wouldn't buy anymore books until September. OUCH!!! We even looked at getting rid of our internet/satellite package but we will be keeping it, at least until the contract runs out.

I think we are covered when it comes to clothes, shoes, food, a roof over our heads and each other.

I try to coordinate my errands. that helps on gas.

we don't buy what we don't need too often. that is a rarity.

I try no to waste foods. I buy what we need in perishables. before we seemed to be wasting more food.. throwing it out.
along those lines I am making less food per meal. that helps both in waste and in the grocery bills

I shop for things on sale and with coupons.

we use the library and online stuff for our resources (though we have always done that beacuse of moving so often... lol)

Just to put things in perspective, my brother lives in Switzerland where gas prices are the equivalent of $7 U.S. a gallon. He bikes a lot and is teaching his children to do the same. His 7 year old can bike at least 5 miles with him.

I am trying to limit my driving and letting people know that they can carpool to homeschool events with me.

Also, I received these tips via email a few weeks ago.

TIPS ON PUMPING GAS

I don't know what you guys are paying for gasoline.... but here in California we are also paying higher, up to $3.50 per gallon. But my line of work is in petroleum for about 31 years now, so here are some tricks to get more of your money's worth for every gallon.

Here at the Kinder Morgan Pipeline where I work in San Jose , CA we deliver about 4 million gallons in a 24-hour period thru the pipeline. One day is diesel the next day is jet fuel, and gasoline, regular and premium grades. We have 34-storage tanks here with a total capacity of 16,800,000 gallons.

Only buy or fill up your car or truck in the early morning when the ground temperature is still cold. Remember that all service stations have their storage tanks buried below ground. The colder the ground the more dense the gasoline, when it gets warmer gasoline expands, so buying in the afternoon or in the evening....your gallon is not exactly a gallon. In the petroleum business, the specific gravity and the temperature of the gasoline, diesel and jet fuel, ethanol and other petroleum products plays an important role.

A 1-degree rise in temperature is a big deal for this business. But the service stations do not have temperature compensation at the pumps.

When you're filling up do not squeeze the trigger of the nozzle to a fast mode. If you look you will see that the trigger has three (3)stages: low, middle, and high. In slow mode you should be pumping on low speed, thereby minimizing the vapors that are created while you are pumping. All hoses at the pump have a vapor return. If you are pumping on the fast rate, some other liquid that goes to your tank becomes vapor. Those vapors are being sucked up and back into the underground storage tank so you're getting less worth for your money.

One of the most important tips is to fill up wh en your gas tank is HALF FULL or HALF EMPTY. The reason for this is, the more gas you have in your tank the less air occupying its empty space. Gasoline evaporates faster than you can imagine. Gasoline storage tanks have an internal floating roof. This roof serves as zero clearance between the gas and the atmosphere, so it minimizes the evaporation. Unlike service stations, here where I work, every truck that we load is temperature compensated so that every gallon is actually the exact amount.

Another reminder, if there is a gasoline truck pumping into the storage tanks when you stop to buy gas, DO NOT fill up--most likely the gasoline is being stirred up as the gas is being delivered, and you might pick up some of the dirt that normally settles on the bottom. Hope this will help you get the most value for your money.

DO SHARE THESE TIPS WITH OTHERS! READ ON...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~
WHERE TO BUY USA GAS, THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT TO KNOW. READ ON
Gas rationing in the 80's worked even though we grumbled about it. It might even be good for us! The Saudis are boycotting American goods.
We should return the favor.
An interesting thought is to boycott their GAS.
Every time you fill up the car, you can avoid putting more money into the coffers of Saudi Arabia. Just buy from gas companies that don't import their oil from the Saudis.
I thought it might be interesting for you to know which oil companies are the best to buy gas from and which major companies import Middle Eastern oil.
These companies import Middle Eastern oil:
Shell........................... 205,742,000 barrels
Chevron/Texaco......... 144,332,000 barrels
Exxon /Mobil............... 130,082,000 barrels
Marathon/Speedway... 117,740,000 barrels
Amoco............................62,231,000 barrels
Citgo gas is from South America, from a Dictator who hates Americans.
If you do the math at $30/barrel, these imports amount to over $18 BILLION! (oil is now over $100 a barrel!)
Here are some large companies that do not import Middle Eastern oil:
Sunoco.................0 barrels
Conoco..................0 barrels
Sinclair.................0 barrels
B P/Phillips............0 barrels
Hess.......................0 barrels
ARC0....................0 barrels
If you go to Sunoco.com , you will get a list of the station locations near you.
All of this information is available from the Department of Energy and each is required to state where they get their oil and how much they are importing.
But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of gas buyers. It's really simple to do. Now, don't wimp out at this point.... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I'm sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)...and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) .. and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers !!!!!!! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted!
If it goes one level further, you guessed it ... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!
We are already pretty frugal, but I am sure I can find other ways to save.
I'll be cutting off worn out winter jeans to make shorts for the kiddos this summer.
As soon as we get to AK we are trading in my Expedition (we need it for the move)for a more economical car. I like the sound of that Ford Freestyle, Cay. I'll have to check it out.
We will be replacing the heater in our home with a pellet stove.
Adding insulation.
Dh is going to have to learn to hunt. A moose in the freezer, along with the salmon and halibut, will do wonders for our budget.
I plan on learning more about gathering wild berries and canning/freezing. They are abundant in AK and I should take advantage.
I hope to get a garden in, but not sure if I can do it in time.I'll have to educate myself about gardening in the land of permafrost!
Only 3 acres, here, but I'm trying to grow healthy veggies. We're raising meat and egg laying chickens with our neighbors, with whom my husband also goes hunting and fishing. We've been eating a lot of game this winter.
These things help my husband feel like a good provider. it also makes him proud that he can do almost all of our home and vehicle improvements and maintenance. It is important to him that I recognize these money saving things that he does...and thank him.
When money gets tight and the family budget needs to be adjusted, there are a lot of things we can do to help, as we've been discussing, but I'm wondering if they're really stressed and depressed about it, perhaps they just need to be shown appreciation (according to their particular "Love Language") for the great job they do in providing for their families...that we do have everything that we need, and more.
I'm pretty sure it's not. I was just wishing. And dreading seeing more of my baby plants gone. I *really really want* a good harvest this year. It would certainly help the grocery bill. If we didn't have to buy meat that would be a plus -- but dh won't ever be a hunter. And I really won't be comfortable having guns in the house either.
As soon as we get to AK we are trading in my Expedition (we need it for the move)for a more economical car. I like the sound of that Ford Freestyle, Cay. I'll have to check it out.
This looks like a neat auto- I especially like the safety rating. We have only bought Fords to support my dad's retirement.
I was reading quickly, and at first I thought you wrote a "mouse in the freezer!"
... See, Stacy, I can DO that on I 74 here in IL, but when we were in Ann Arbor area, on I 94, well, forget it!!! I still can't believe I drove about 80 on there and thought nothing of it!! here, I stick to 65 and there are STILL those going slower than I am !!!
I need to move to IL! It is fairly crazy on every expressway around here. I guess that is due to the fact many Michiganders have a thing for autos... And the gas at the corner was $3.499 this afternoon! If anyone comes to MI, I will be the car in the right hand lane going slowly!
God Bless,
Stacy in MI (20 minutes from Ann Arbor and 15 minutes from Detroit, aka The MotorCity)
