Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I've had two Pyrex baking dishes explode without warning: my 9x13" exploded as I lifted it from a drawer and my 9x9" exploded when I set it (gently) in the sink. They were both, probably, 18-19 years old or so at the time. There was no temperature change, no slamming or smashing, etc. My husband did not believe that the first exploded of its own accord until my children confirmed it. After the second one (also witnessed by children) we vowed never to use Pyrex cookware again. Of course when a Pyrex or Corelle dish or bowl is dropped or is broken it shatters into a zillion tiny shards which take an hour to clean up. I switched to regular Ikea ceramic dinnerware (instead of the Corelle I'd used since my wedding shower) - when they break it's a few, large pieces. Much easier to clean up!

Stoneware, like from Pampered Chef also break in large pieces. And they make wonderful baked goods!

Marmee Dear carries alot of stainless steel cookware. I'm out of money for this month (I know, I know, it's only the first week... ) but I think I will be fitting a lasagna pan into my budget next month.

The stovetop was not on at all this morning before this happened, and it's a gas stove, so when I set it on the burner it is pretty 'open' for circulation. I just don't understand what happened. I am SO glad the kiddos were in bed, someone would have been hurt b/c our kichen is so small. The cat jumped and let out a "RRRRREEERRRR!" and I nearly wet my pants!

That is SO SCARY! Oh my goodness....

This happened to my MIL at Thanksgiving w/ an apple pie. The glass pieces were in every single dish she made - turkey included. I think they went out to eat.

Is this a problem for just Pyrex specifically? What about Anchor Hocking dishes? Corning Ware?

I've had one explode too, but it was my fault, I set it on a burner that was still hot...    Poor, poor us missed out on Oatmeal Date Squares!

Wanna share your Big Family Dutch Baby recipe?

Here is what really scares me...
I read through almost all of the complaints last night, some of them date back to 2003, and was most appalled to read the ones that claimed that a dish that hadn't even been used suddenly exploded in the cabinet! There were also reports of measuring cups and the French White Corningware doing the same thing. I don't even want to open my cabinets right now to look at what I have!!!

Here are the Anchor Hocking complaints.

What I find most interesting about this: Pyrex dishes have been around for many years, yet the reports of 'exploding' pieces seem to have begun only within the last decade or so. Ovens are just as hot (and countertops just as cool) as they always have been, which means that something HAD to have changed in the manufacturing process of the cookware, causing them to become more susceptible to fractures caused by temperature change.

If I'm right, it is just another reminder that advances in technology are not always advances, and "they just don't make 'em like they used to!"

That's what I was thinking. I don't think it's a 'defect' amoung the ovens, countertops, or cubboards! I really can't say that I did anything 'wrong', what could I have done differently?

You are right, Tim!

Pyrex bowls were originally made of something called borosilicate glass, which is very resistant to thermal shock. Currently, Pyrex is made of soda-lime glass, presumably as a cost-cutting measure, as soda-lime glass is very inexpensive. Also, Pyrex is no longer made by the original manufacturer, and is essentially a brand name, rather than a material.

From this article.

I've seen almost this exact same thread on a different homeschooling board. Scary! After that, I stopped using my Pyrex dishes in the oven, I only use them for cold or room temperature items. Like defrosting meat in the fridge, or when we make a giant salad for dinner. I switch to Pampered Chef stoneware, one at a time, about a year apart.

I thought it was because, perhaps, the microwave or the dishwasher somehow compromised the integrity of the pressed glass? Hard to say!

For me, the problem comes in replacing pyrex and the like, because there aren't very many good choices! Aluminum? Stoneware with lead-based glazes? Plastic? ;) *gasp* LOL! Hee hee hee.

I'm sorry, I should have stated that when *my* two dishes exploded, I thought (at the time) it might have been due to my using them in either the dishwasher or microwave. Mine were 18 and 19 years old at the time as they were wedding shower gifts 20 years ago. Sorry for the confusion!!

We've lived in rentals until July of last year when we actually bought our own home!!! We had microwaves and dishwashers intermittently in the various rentals, but when we did have them - I used them! Now we're our own lovely, little house with a microwave/convection oven AND a dishwasher AND a cooktop it feels like SUCH luxury! LOL!!

Even more disturbing as I was trying to convince myself that maybe it was only the newer ones.

This doesn't help much for alternatives to Pyrex, but we make out "dutch Baby" in a cast iron skillet in the oven. I bet you could use a dutch oven without the lid. We call it "Puffy pancake pie" and lazy mommy has started putting canned (!) lite cherry pie filling in when time is too short to do the apples!
