I was making a Dutch baby for breakfast this morning. I make it in my 11x16 pyrex baking dish. I took it out of the oven and set it on the stove top.   I turned to the sink then heard a loud pop and shattering sound, turned around to see that the dish literally exploded and glass sprayed everywhere! Luckily I was the only one up, so no children were around. My husband just called from work and he said he googled 'exploding pyrex' and it seems to be a pretty common problem. Scary stuff. I'm doing away with all of my glass baking dishes now.

Glad no one was hurt. I don't have any of their casserole dishes but lots of their bakeware. Hmmmm....

Hi Lisa,

how scary! I'm glad to hear that nobody got hurt.

I have to admit....I also find you making 'a Dutch baby for breakfast' quiet scary...as I'm Dutch myself . What is a Dutch baby (other than the obvious) ????

Wow! I've had my Pyrex break, but in bigger pieces. Now what my experience had lots of chards is French Corningware. Those go everywhere and are very sharp!

It broke just sitting on your stove after baking?? Yikes! I had a pan shatter when I set it in the sink (very hot) and turned the water on, thinking I'd soak the pan for a bit before I washed it--well, the water was cold, and the pan shattered, but it was in the sink, so at least contained.

I'd never heard of one just shattering out of nowhere like that! Scary!

A puff pancake is another name for it I think!

This is the second time this has happened to me, the last time was about 11 years ago and I thought it was my fault b/c the burner on the stove was still hot.

The other scary thing is that the hot butter from the Dutc - er, puff pancake, sprayed all over too. Not to mention the waste of 12 eggs, 2 cups of flour, a stick of butter, and 2 cups of milk...

This has also happened here. Very, very scary, but also, thank God, no one was hurt.

I wouldn't know what to do without my Pyrex 9X13. Seriously! What other options are there?

We had this happen with a lid to one of our pans. It wasn't Pyrex, but it was a glass lid. It eploded into a million pieces all over the kitchen. It was scary.

This happened to me one Thanksgiving years ago. But to be fair I did put it on the stovetop after taking it out of the oven, *with the burner on low*, thinking it was okay to make gravy that way. It did explode (there's really no other way to describe the phenomenon despite what the article says), throwing off shrapnel in a hundred different directions. I'm soooo thankful none of the kids were in the kitchen at the time -- only my brother, hubby and myself. I still haven't gotten rid of all my Pyrex though and still use them for baking now and then -- thanks for this information -- my accident was definitely due to operator error, but sounds like the exploding Pyrex itself isn't that uncommon.

Oooh, and we love(d) Dutch babies too! I used to make it in a small cast iron pan. Love it with lemon juice and confectioners sugar, plus fresh strawberries on top.

We love Dutch Baby here, too. Here's a link to our recipe. It's a special treat for breakfast a couple of times a year.

Those pyrex dishes are super scary when they break. We've had that happen here. I was STUNNED at just how tiny the pieces were. I think that the corningware stuff is actually the same thing - tempered glass? Not sure. (Sounds like a science lesson to me)

Blessings,

this happened with one of my pyrex pie plates but it was in the oven at the time. A pain to clean but it was contained. What are you going to use for baking, Lisa? I guess I could use my metal brownie pans instead.

Wow!
I use it for this too...

I wonder if it is because the pan gets a small crack in it and gets pushed over the edge? dunno...I would love to know what kind of cooking pans are the safest...and I am also talking about pans that don't leach anything unwanted (like aluminum) into the food....

I am soooo glad you are safe!

God love you!

This is what I did, too; although mean wasn't quite so explosive.

This article talks about temperature changes or a wet surface...also seems like a lot of their reports are of people placing them on stovetops....I wonder if that has anything to do with it?

Thanks for the warning! I use my dish very frequently.

this has happened to me too- I thought I was the only one!! how scary. On another pyrex note, I was contemplating getting rid of all my rubbermaid and tupperware for leftovers and going with SQUARE (because square shape fits better, makes more sense) pyrex with those flexible plastic (blue??) lids for all of our leftovers....

Does anyone know if this also applies to the Pyrex storage containers I just bought to replace my old plastic ones? They mentioned measuring cups too in the article as something everyone has. Is the danger only for the baking dishes?

you can get stainless steel ($$$$) or enamelware in most baking sizes.. neither are supposed to leach anything into the food.
