I'm with Simon (for once!) and felt like I would have been happy with whoever won. My personal favorite for the past few weeks was David A. But I'm definitely not disappointed in tonight's results.
After last night, I realized that I really think David Cook has it in him to become a lasting music star. David A. seems more likely to be a teeny bopper star for a few years and then fade away.
And I really like David Cook's story of being a bartender who came along for moral support for his brother, who was auditioning, and ending up the next American Idol.
On a completely different note, I was wondering about the timing of AI broadcasts. If the shows are supposed to be live, are they only live for those of us on the East Coast? Tonight's show was on at 8pm. Isn't that 5pm in CA? And if other time zones are not live, is everyone tempted to go online and find out each week's winners before the end of the shows are broadcast? Just curious.

Irene,
I think the show is live everywhere. In CA they just leave the beach a little earlier 5 is kinda early for the show to start. I hope we didn't spoil the surprise for anyone.
I loved football season in Hawaii, the pre-game show started at 6am. I could sleep until 8 and only have to watch the second half of the game. We could be out sailing by noon.
I still have a hard time with football starting at 9pm. In San Diego the games always started at 6, much better for watching with friends.

Are you rubbing something in Mary Chris
I've never lived anywhere other than the eastern time zone and I've only visited the mountain time zone for a weekend. Your descriptions of football, sleeping and sailing...how nice!!!!
I need to get around more!!!!!

My husband and I figured David A would win, and we wondered if he'd pass out on stage if he did!
I agree, Kacky-- we loved his duet with New Republic. If he had done more songs like that, I probably would have like him more. Regardless, he's going to have a carreer. He has a beautiful voice.

Not rubbing in Kacky, just reminiscing. It was nice to spend time with friends and not have to leave at half-time. We only watched the Bills play and those can be painful games.

We were definetly rooting on David A. (LOVED his cCollective Soul take the other night!) But I will say David A.'s duet with One Republic was the very best AI performance ever in my book! :) There were lots of squeals over David C.'s win here last night! ;)
*edited b/c I mixed up the Davids!

I'm glad David C. won because he definitely has earned it. David A. is clearly not ready for the pressures that come with fame...I would rather see him keep his sweet and innocent demeanor a little longer! I do agree with Simon, either one of them was deserving, though.

We watch American Idol here too. Only our oldest (10)watches it with us, - the little ones are in bed. We enjoy it, innapropriate clothing choices all too frequently -- usually Paula. (Who drives me crazy anyway.)
I was stunned when they all sang 'Shout to the Lord' a few weeks back. With American Idol being the #1 show on television with the largest viewing audience, I was surprised they chose such a powerfully 'praising Jesus' song -- and wondered how many of the contestants sang it with their heart. I thought it was so bold for AI to do that, knowing how many COULD be offended. But they are BIG enough that they could do that, and hopefully did so with some real message to many viewers. I wondered so much about all of the details of how singing that song came about -- you know? I felt like it was a good step for America and television, or something. Maybe it wasn't as big a deal as it seemed to me. But one thing is for sure -- I was really happy to see it!

We are very happy here that David Cook won AI!! We also loved hearing "Shout to the Lord" when they sang it a few weeks ago. They did leave out one verse, though, but that was OK. We sing it at our church (Catholic) on occasion and it was nice for the kids to hear it on a show like that.

Unfortunatley, they "balanced" the Shout to the Lord song with the George Michael medley . . .

Call me picky, but it irritated me that they didn't put Jesus' name in Shout to the Lord until people complained that they took it out the first time.
I am glad David Cook won though there were others, I think, that could have done well also.
Warning: conspiracy-ish theory follows. I think Simon really wanted Cook to win though he said he would be happy if either did. Did anyone else notice that if Simon strongly criticized someone their "ratings" by the viewers went up? It happened on several weeks with different contestants. It was like the strong spirit of rooting for the underdog took precedence over actually voting for someone who could sing well. Simon went really over the top with his critique of David Cook and, I think, people responded to that. Told you it was a little wacky of me to think that way.
This was my first season watching so what do I know.

Really? I only heard it sung once, and it was full of Jesus' name. I must have missed something.
And what was George Michael's medley about? I heard him sing, but didn't really listen the words.

The first night they sang the song Jesus' name was omitted. The following night, however, they sang the song with Jesus' name.
We had the volume down during George Michael's song (nothing against him, no protest ) it was a loud day here and I just wanted to hear who the winner was.
George Michael sang Praying for Time.

Thank you Michaela.
Yes, I definitely heard it with His name. I mean it STARTS with His name...how can they omit it? How would the whole song make sense? I thought I saw all of the shows...but I do tend to walk away from the TV and do other things, a lot.
Now I just read the lyrics to George Michael's song. He sounds a little.....bitter?

The first time it was sung was on the "Idol gives back" show. They subbed other names/characteristics of Jesus but didn't use his name. Shout to the Lord I on youtube

Oh yeah...I walked away a lot that night. Are you linking me to the ditty without His name. I'm just going to believe you and leave it at that. Don't really want to hear it without Him. Must be why I missed it in the first place. lol

My husband's teaching night class right now, so we had the results recorded on the DVR to watch the next day. Unfortunately, I had it spoiled for me the next morning by yahoo! when I went to check my e-mail. It turns out my husband had already found out, too, but we watched the broadcast anyway.
We were happy with the results. David A. is a good singer, but we suspect he has been strongly stage-parented. And as I said before, his abilities seem pretty limited to ballads. We don't really think that he has the creativity or talent to be a major artist.
We enjoyed a lot of the performances. ZZ Top made me want to get up and line dance, as "Sharp Dressed Man" used to be one of my favorite songs to line dance to. If I didn't have a sleeping baby on me, I probably would have hopped up to see if I remembered the steps.
Although, that show is just such one big blatant commercial for EVERYTHING. Sometimes it really annoys me, but then other times I just have to remember and accept that all the commercialism is the intended purpose of television, the shows are incidental.
