Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

If you did this move, you might take the opportunity now to do a lot of the sorting, organizing, getting-rid-of stuff that you would have done anyway 16 months later. Also, you can store some "extraneous" things for the later move, and just keep out essentials and a few things to make the new house seem homey. That way you're not packing and unpacking absolutely everything twice.

When we moved to England for four years, we did just that -- only shipped what we thought we'd absolutely need to make ourselves feel at home (and it was too much, as we realized by the time the boxes reached us!). That was four years, not sixteen months, but still, it made life a lot easier not to have moved our entire household of belongings. We took some dishes that I wanted to make the table look pretty; a selected few knicknacks and pictures, a much-reduced library of books, and clothes. And even before it all arrived, our flat already felt like home, and we wondered why we'd thought we needed all that stuff.

So if you do go for the move, there are ways to minimize the double disruption -- and streamlining it all now will make the bigger, later move go far more smoothly (because many of the boxes will already be packed).

Sally

In a flat rectangle you could put up a bird feeder and a bird bath. Watching the birds and squirrels is a huge part of life at my house every day.

You can put out buckets of water in the summer for the kids to splash in, a blow-up pool, a bubble machine...

You could plant bulbs and watch for them to grow (doable in 16 months), you can lie in the grass on a blanket and watch the clouds change shape....

So many things to do in a yard. For me, it would be worth the hassle of moving. Our yard inspires so much creativity in the kids. I would pick a great yard and a so-so house any day over a the reverse.

Jordan and Rachel, The concern I shared that a third party presented the idea is something we've learned to consider more closely in any decision-making, since it's not always directly evident with third party involvement whether it is truly God's will or another person's. Weighing additional factors that you've mentioned, Jordan, of having help from your mil, it sounds more reasonable. We have always had a decent yard, even in the city, and have found it invaluable. Jordan the incidents you described of encountering this yard and home in the past sounds more as though the Lord may very well have been guiding you in that direction already. May He continue to guide and bless you and your family as you discern His holy will for you. He is truly faithful when we turn things over to Him in prayer and in humble submission to His Divine plan.

This is such a good point. It would be worth it if I could get us all settled in a short time.

Yes, you are right. It would be nice to get a headstart on getting rid of some things before our real move back to the States. We wouldn't need to do a thorough packing job, however, because the other house is only about a half mile away.

Thank you all so much for your feedback. I expected to be told I should try to ride it out in this house. Your responses have helped me realize that it isn't so crazy. Dh and I will go together soon to look at the house more closely and we'll look into the practicalities of moving before we dedice if it's something we want to try to do.

Thanks again.
