So next time I come home with an aphid-full head of lettuce (as often happens), I should just refrigerate and serve? The boys might not notice or mind, but Tim.... Maybe he won't read this...

I just posted photos at my blog of raccoons we caught emptying our feeders last night. Those rascals have been at it all week and we're down lots of seed and one good tube feeder!  But they are kind of cute.

Dawn, those are great pictures! We've had racoons in our yard, but have only heard them and seen their tracks. They actually ate through the thick plastic tub that held our bird seed!

Thanks Janette! My husband actually got the shots by fiddling around with the settings (something I never find the patience to do  ). I'm not surprised those raccoons ate through that tub. They are so resourceful! Bill said he watched them reach under the squirrel shield and lift the tube feeder off the hook!  They're less civilized though when it comes to sharing the spoils ~ oh, the racket!

Oh my goodness, I'm sorry I seem to hog this thread, but I have to ask about coyotes. We just watched one run all around our neighbor's yard! He was pretty young and wiry and acting kind of frisky - rolling around in the grass and running back and forth. I took pictures through the sliding doors that came out fairly clear.
So what's the deal with coyotes? Should we be afraid, very afraid, or are they no big deal ...

We have coyotes here and have never had any trouble. But then again it is odd to see one out in the broad daylight. Are you certain it was a coyote and not some kind of stray dog? I would steer clear either way for fear of rabies, but I have never heard of a coyote hurting anyone. Dogs, on the other hand...

Yes, I'll be posting them this morning. They're through glass so they're a bit fuzzy, but I would love you to look and see what you think! I had a post all ready on the *spore prints* we finally made (!) but that will have to wait. I need to know if this is a coyote!
I called the animal officer and left a message. I want to ask him if there have been sightings before. We have really deep woods behind us so it wouldn't surprise me!

We had a kestrel! It killed a bird and lunched in our backyard. I posted about it (with pictures) at Bonny Glen yesterday.

Coyotes are becoming so common these days. My aunt get to see them walking down the street all the time, and there was one in Central Park a while back. Mostly harmless, yes, but as Theresa points out...rabies is always a possibility. And keep the cats, chickens and rabbits indoors.
Lissa, kestrels are neat, but watching them catch and eat some poor bird is so hard sometimes . We saw one pick off a sparrow at a baseball game once...oh, ugh--er--I mean, how interesting!

LOL, if I sound calm, it's only because we've only seen him through glass so far! I posted a few more pictures and details just now.
Now my question is this, if we are outside and we see this animal, do we walk or run away? Our yard has a chain-link fence - would it be able to scale it? (You can see the wild scenarios I have worked out in my head! )

Dawn, unless that coyote is rabid, you have nothing to worry about. Bang some pots and pans together and he will be long gone! I would alert the wildlife officer, though if he sticks around too long. Could be a half-grown pup that lost it's mom. someone may get the bright idea to poison it as there are alot of predjudices against the poor things.

We have had a coyote in our backyard (mid-day) and have also seen them around our town. We have never had a problem with them. Here is info from Ohio's DNR, which gives a good deal of info on them. Here is the one from Michigan's DNR, which, while lacking general info, does give advice on safety with the coyote.
How incredibly neat what we can find without having to leave home!
BTW, we are putting together a section in our "animal's" book (sort of like the on the "Stanley" show on Disney for anyone who has seen it- just a notebook of animals we have studied, organized alphabetically, with narrations,drawings and colored pictures,) on the wildlife we have found in our own backyard. It is growing!
