Well, I'm not sure I could use these with a straight face ~ but they *would* make an excellent teaching tool, and a most precise way of identifying any scat we find in the woods.

Wow! So exciting, we just saw a Manatee off our stern this morning. We're thinking that perhaps he was a yearling, no prop scars, probably 9 feet long and he kept sucking on his right flipper. So cute! If you can use that word for a 3,000lb animal !

Does it count if you only see the "evidence" of creatures in your backyard? We had bear again last night - it is the first time this spring. There was quite a "paw" print in the frost on the side of one of the feeders. I woke up to find bird feeders ripped out of the ground and quite a mess of seed around the patio. Fortuantely the birds didn't mind as the area was quite busy - even our pair of Cardinals made an appearance this morning.
Time to contemplate bringing in the feeders.

Now that is something I don't think anyone else on this list can ever say they saw in their yard! What a unique yard you have - thanks for posting.

Sure does, especially if it is a large and potentially dangerous mammal! Are your neighbors noticing the bears, too?

We once had an entire mounted fox hunt ride into our yard, hounds in full cry, with the master shouting that they had chased a black panther under our house!!!
Exciting though it was (and we have found panther tracks on our car, and seen them occasionally) it actually turned out to be our black Great Dane, scared half to death...

Funny, Alice, I was just telling my nephew today YOUR great story about your uncle (or was it great uncle) and the man-eating shark off the Jersey shore. It has become one of my favorite---though chilling--- stories.

LOL! I'm so happy you remember that!
My "Little House in the Big Woods" fans are going to be very interested to know that you and your family have seen panthers and their tracks, and they will get a big kick out of the fox hunters chasing your Great Dane!

Not quite in my backyard, but was amused to read this morning about this
American Robin which apparently lost its way big time!

Hi MacBeth! We had the cutest little phoebe build a nest right outside our bedroom window about 12 years ago! I have never seen another since. (We lived in a more rural area then.)
I just posted on my blog about birds I am "after" ... the Eastern Phoebes are on my wishlist :)

Not in our yard but in our bedroom, a starling came down the chimney and inside this morning. Once they get behind th window blinds, they are easy to catch and release.

We just had 4 enormous hawks circling our yard and the abandoned railbed behind our property ... they were the biggest hawks we've ever seen! They were entirely brown - no white or red. I'm wondering what kind of hawk they were, or perhaps they were another type of raptor?

You've got it MacBeth!
I just wrote about it in my blog; it was my 6 yo who realized what they were long before the rest of us!

I pulled out my Acorn Naturalists catalog yesterday and found they have a Scat Scarf - which sounds bizarre - but is basically a bandana printed with information about, and pictures of, animal scat. I would think it would be light and easy to carry out into the field (not to mention an interesting conversation piece). |

We had a dear friend visiting us and my eldest ds (8) said to her, "All Dad talks about is poop, poop, poop. I don't know why he is so interested in poop." It cracked me up, because we live in the mountains and we have to be on the look out for cougars and bears. Todd is so interested in "poop" because he is protecting us.
Anyways, I think I will get this scarf for Father's Day for dh from his sons
