Our bat was definitely a tiny insect-eater (that's a really good thing!  ). It was so tiny! My guess is that he was a Western small-footed Myotis, Silver Haired, or a Western Pipestrelle.
At our feeder yesterday, we had a Western Tanager and another mostly yellow bird that was bigger than a finch, but that flitted away before I could identify it. Maybe they were male and female of the same species? But the yellow bird we saw was *really bright.* Any ideas?

I wasn't able to get them all photographed, but we saw a whole bunch of new birds in our yard yesterday! 
Here's my post with links to the new birds: Canada warbler, Yellow-throated warbler, Magnolia warbler and American redstart.
We also welcomed the return of our catbird and a pair of nesting Carolina wrens. We're just waiting to see the orioles now!

Tina, could it have been a warbler? Many of them are very yellow. Or perhaps an American goldfinch? Oops, I see you said it was bigger than a finch.

I took a picture of a really neat spider in the garden today (it's one of my Friday Photos). Never seen one like him before, but I think we might have identified it at Bugguide.net: orchard orbweaver.

Dawn, I love the spider pic. I have a special fondness for the orchard spider, as it was one of the very first spiders I learned to identify. Plus it is just so darn pretty with it's silvery abdomen and bright green legs.

Oh Theresa, I'm glad you saw this! I was hoping you'd take a look and confirm (or deny) our findings. It really is a very cool spider (and I never thought I'd say that about any spider!). 
I've been thinking of you recently as I've been trapping and releasing HUGE jumping spiders in our house.  I remember last year you told me they were harmless and so I make sure we get them out without harm.

We had a nice surprise this morning. A snowberry clearwing moth oblingly sat on the screen of the music room while we ran back and forth from the computer to try to identify him. After a while, we went outside to check out his other side and try to suck him in the bug vacuum, but he was too big. That got him stirring though, and we observed his flight pattern and eating habits before we came in.
We used this site to help us do our observation. Anthony loves nature, but I admit to not being great at observations and ids so I was pretty excited that we were able to figure this guy out!

My son just caught a 5 lined skink a few weeks ago. Now he lives in a tank in his room along with a southern toad he caught last week.
They've been great for all the children to observe.

We recently visited Wisconsin. Does my brother's backyard qualify? I know that most of these will be very common to you, but to this midwesterner transplanted to the west, they were a sight for sore eyes. We saw:
cardinals
cowbirds
blue jays
gold finches
purple finches
red-wing blackbirds (we *hear* them here ... by Sam's Club, of all places ... but we don't see them)
rose breasted grosbeaks
ruby-throated hummingbirds
ladderbacked woodpeckers
and a gorgeous pair of orioles
Oh ... I miss my roots!

In our backyard...literally...well, our state's backyard anyway. It was sighted by a charter-boat captain who lives in Lake Charles (ten minutes from our city) out on the Calcasieu Lake.

We've lived in our present house for 9 yrs and a pair of cardinals has always nested somewhere in our front bushes. We even had all the bushes removed several years ago due to some problems and planted new ones. I've never been able to see the nests or the babies. This year we have been fortunate to see 4 fledged babies at our front yard feeder and on the ground around the bushes. The males are still not as bright as the adults but are getting there.

Wild turkeys are so widespread; I have seen them in Massachusetts and Mexico, and just about every state we have visited, including Colorado last summer, but I have never gotten a really good photo, especially one where you can see the blue parts so well. Great photo Joann!
