My DH is a picky eater and prefers to make his own lunches (I put in too many things that might actaully be good for him!). There are only four of us here and the kids rarely eat a whole serving of something. If I make a chicken dish that serves 4, DH and I each have a serving, the kids split a serving and the one leftover becomes a lunch for DH. With recipes that serve 6, we get a few extra meals and freeze them. As the boys are getting older, I can't count on this meathod.

I like the bento boxes and am not a fan of plastic. DH microwaves his meals and this is his choice (wouldn't be mine) so it would need to be something microwave safe.

I pack my husband's lunch every night after we eat dinner. It's part of the kitchen clean-up routine. I try very hard to make healthful, balanced dinners with fresh ingredients, so I just take a portion and set it aside for his lunch the next day. I bought some plastic plates with lids that seal. I dish a lunch-sized portion of everything we had for dinner (if something is to be kept cold and the rest of the meal is to be warmed, or vice versa) I pack it in a side container. This gives him a serving of lean meat, a green veggie, and a starch for every lunch. In the morning, all I have to do is put some fruit and a starchy snack in the bag and he has a meal and two snacks for the day.
What's great about this method is that I dont have to THINK about what Im going to pack in the morning.
It's working out great for us so far!

Ok - I am just about to order the Bento jar that Stef recommended for dh's birthday. Stef - I will be contacting you if I have any problems with figuring out how it works. I have printed out your ideas for lunch and how you store them in the different containers. Do you have anywhere on your blog with other lunch ideas?

Well, I'm doing better, thanks to all of you. I've managed to start setting aside parts of our dinner more often, although I'm still in the process of learning how much to make. This week he's only had two lunches, because once they brought in pizza at work and one other day he was out of town. (That was Ash Wednesday.) The other two days he had:

Beef and root vegetable soup (with dumplings) + apple
Pork chop + sweet potato + pear

And tomorrow he'll have leftover beef/veggie lo mein with some kind of fruit.

He's much happier.

Stef, I do have one question about the Bento, though: how big is it really? It looks gigantic in the photos!

Ok, that was dumb -- he can't bring beef lo mein to work tomorrow because it's FRIDAY.

I'm obviously still an amateur.

Let me get my ruler...

The bottom bowl is about 1 3/4" H x 4" D (top) x 3 1/2" D (bottom).

The biggest compartment is 4 1/2" D x 2" H.

Next one is 4 1/2" D x 1 1/2" H.

Smallest compartment is 3 3/4" D x 1 1/4" H.

So about 6 1/2" H x 4 1/4" D total area.

It's not that big. You should have seen *my* bento box when I was going to school -- they weren't as well-designed, and very bulky -- though I think the insulation was better, because of the thickness. It was about 7"W x 7"D x 8"H, plus a shoulder strap.

more choices here, including a couple humongous ones!

hth,

Ladies, your desire to fix better lunches for your husbands is surely inspiration from the Lord, for the sake of your dh's health. We recently learned that my husband is pre-diabetic and in researching diabetes we learned that men very often overtax their pancreas by not eating appropriately for breakfast or lunch and practically binging at night. My husband used to skip breakfast, eat pretzels throughout the day (while on the run), come home famished, then eat ravenously throughout the night. He is newly converted to the necessity of eating six small, well balanced meals and snacks throughout the day and thankfully is doing well maintaining his blood sugars with oral medication and diet.

It is really not too difficult to pack healthy lunches by utilizing leftovers from mealtimes. We always pack dh's lunch during mealtime cleanup, or if the meal I'm serving has limited portions, I will pack his lunch before we serve the family and encourage them to fill up on side dishes if they're still hungry. We are especially careful to freeze leftovers from Friday meatless meals for the following week, since it can be more challenging to come up with meatless options for packing lunches. Packing up meals for Papa has become routine and everyone in the family likes to pitch in. It is definitely much easier to pack a lunch the night before than to scramble around in the morning at the last minute. BTDT :(

My husband is HORRIBLE with regards to food. Not only is he the pickiest person EVER, but he refuses to use the microwave at his office! (OK I don't blame him for that one ).
If it is green and it is NOT a bean, he wont eat it.
He won't eat tomatoes. He wont eat cold meat.
He won't eat cheese or eggs or pasta or rice (I can get him to eat rice with the main meal but he wont eat leftovers... or much of the rice).
He is convinced that missing lunch is a good idea and that crackers throughout the day are better for him.
I am truly stuck with regards to his lunches... right now he just picks up some crackers at the store and eats those.
I have NO IDEA what to do... help??

If he likes crackers would he like some soup to wash them down with?    A good thermos would keep the soup warm till lunch eliminating the use of the microwave too.

(BTW I am sorry to hijack this thread, but it IS on topic at least!)

That might be easier
He eats HOT meat, HOT potatoes, HOT beans (all kinds).
HOT Fish (I have problems thinking around this as I dislike fish )--except tuna.
Corn and peas.
Crackers
Cakes, doughnuts, COLD pies, puddings and cookies
All kinds of bread (BUT he does say he prefers store bought for sandwiches )
Couscous
He occasionally will eat certain fruits... apples, oranges and strawberries BUT most other berries he prefers to have cooked.

I think that is about it! Does it help?
He can't have nuts or chocolate (allergies).

WOW... no wonder I have issues with my menus!

I have suggested this, but apparently finding a thermos is too much effort

Actually I think it is a nice idea, I just need a thermos!

Maybe he would like what my Hubby calls a 'deli' lunch:

crackers and/ or cut-up pita
cubed cheese
various olives/ pickles
raw veggies like carrot sticks, broccoli florets, slices of raw mushrooms, pepper strips
dips like hummus
cold chickpeas

Hubby also likes a yogurt or some cottage cheese for some extra protein.

Hi Stef - my main question is whether I can put the main meal in the bigger "hot" bowl which the instructions term the rice bowl? eg tomorrow I was going to put something like miso soup in the soup container, a casserole in the big container and then the snacks and salad in the 2 top ones. Usually I would be more likely to use the little bowl for carbs and the bigger bowl for protein - will it keep hot and is the bigger container leak proof?

Thanks!
