Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My 5 yo ds gets about 10 hours' sleep a night. He goes to bed about 8.30 but often stays awake until 9.30. Then wakes up at about 7.30 to 8 am.

I really noticed a change in both him and my dd (7yo) when they hit about 5 and a half. They seemed to really cut down on their sleep needs, down from 12 hours to about 10 hours. They're fine, but I'm really feeling the lack of time to myself...

Our 4.5 yo gets up around the time you mentioned and goes to bed at 7 also. He and the younger one have to stay in bed till 6, unless expressly given permission otherwise. Naps are from 10-12 daily. He usually does nap. There are times when he doesn't fall asleep, but he still has to stay in bed and keep quiet.

How do you get them to do this?

What if they pull the "I'm hungry and thirsty" card?

I am seriously thinking of leaving a little drink and snack in thier rooms for their so they can nibble in their bed when they wake up so early.

We formed it as a habit with consistency. They rarely pull the hunger/thirst card. They eat within a couple hours of going to bed and know they will eat shortly after they are allowed up. If anything, we sometimes get the, "I need to go to the bathroom" card, and that often ends up being a BM--maybe the child gets relaxed enough for one at naptimes and bedtimes.

Can I ask for those whose dc go to bed early, when do your dhs' come home? Also, do you alter the schedule in the summer?

Stacy, my husband usually gets home around 5:00-5:30. Typically, we start eating dinner within a half hour of his return.

We usually keep the same schedule in the summer. We have room darkening roller shades that help a great deal with this. When our homeschool is out for a "spring/summer" break, they may sleep in a bit later, but we try to keep everything else just about status quo.

Dh comes home after 8pm or later when he's on dayshift and when he's on nightshift he leaves for work around 6:30pm. There are many nights where i am on my own and those nights the kids get to bed on time. When he's off, they usually stay up later. Not the baby but my other 2.

Right now, we live in a country that does not do daylight savings time, thank goodness.

My husband gets home from work anywhere from 6:00-8:00pm. He's the boss/business owner, so he gets to put in all kinds of icky hours. He tries to be home by 6, but if he sees that he's going to get home right at bedtime, he actually stays later because arriving home just gets the kids super excited right when they're supposed to be winding down. Our bedtimes are exactly set in stone... just in nearly-dried clay . The 3yo's 6:30 bedtime has to happen about 5 out of 7 days because he just becomes wild if we mess with bedtime too much. In the summer, I really don't adjust bedtime. We don't do DST in Arizona, so it stays light out rather late - that's just tough for the littlest kids, but they just can't stay up til 9 and then wake up with the sun at 5! That makes this Mama super cranky.
