My children absolutely love the books from the Redwall Series. Does anybody else have children who are crazy about these books? They have collected most of the books now. Although Brian Jacques keeps writing more.

Absolutely! My children would choose Redwall as their favorite adventure series. They can't get enough of the books and re-read the original three or four all the time. Brian Jacques certainly knows how to entertain kids--not to mention adults!

We went through quite a Redwall phase a few years back, though we haven't picked the books up in awhile. But, when the girls met one of their now-best-friends, one of the first things they discovered was that they all loved Redwall. I can still hear the other little girl saying, "Redwall?! Oh, yeah, these girls are friends o' mine!"
I did several medieval rabbit trails while we read the books. They're a lot of fun. And I remember even being able to incorporate faith lessons into our discussions (in one of the books, Father Abbott is instructing everyone not to shoot Cluny the Scourge in the back if he's running away, and we talked about the ethics of self-defense vs. overt aggression ... at their level, of course....)

We love the Redwall books. The audiobooks are great to listen to and Brian Jacques has written some nice children's picture books. The only one I can think of now is The Great Redwall Feast. My kids have talked about having a Redwall feast, that will be fun once the snowy weather comes and we're home more.

Hi Alice,
Could you tell me which are the first 3 or 4 in the series? My oldest dd has read Redwall and 2nd dd had begun it at one point, but no one is hooked around here. I am wondering if we are just not an "animals as main characters" book type of family. Although everyone loved the Chronicles of Narnia, which has so many animal characters. Maybe the presence of the human characters made that more interesting to the girls?

I would suggest that you listen to the first one or two books on tape together as a family. It is unfortunate that the original recordings, produced by Recorded Books Inc., are no longer available. They were *great.* Brian Jacques himself re-recorded Redwall and Mossflower with an original cast, but it is actually not as entertaining, primarily because the varied accents and fast talking are sometimes frustrating for children to follow. Still, these audiobooks re worth a listen if you can get a hold of them.
Our family has listened to Redwall on tape at least four times over the years, and it's become part of our "family culture" with all of us using lines from the book at times.

We love Redwall! I had waited until this year to read them with my son (as I knew an earlier reading especially with my sensitive 9 yo dd would be too graphic) and he absolutely loves it!! Then the 9 yo rapidly devoured it herself as she chose to listen to only parts of it. She is now a Redwall fan as well  .
We have started the 2nd one, Mossflower and it is proving to be great as well! My 3 yo ds noticed the audio version of Redwall on the shelf and said, "Hey mommy, look, let's get it for Ben."  I believe it is the one by the author himself so we'll see how it goes.

We are major Redwall fans over here! It's funny that you posted on this topic today as we all were in the mood for Redwall and pulled out Mattimeo. We seem to love reading this series in the Fall!
It is a very "cozy" series because of the great job he does decribing things. And my oh my how hungry we all get each time we read from them! My daughter would love a Redwall Cookbook, but I think they only have recipes on-line and not in an actual book.
I read well, but I don't do voices so the children prefer for my oldest daughter to read this series as she does a great job with the mole jargen and with the British accents. She has us all ROTFL!!

Big Redwall fans in the our house, too. My daughter would DEFINITELY vote for Redwall as her absolute fave. She's read them all, more times than we can count

Funnily enoough Irene, my children are not interested in the Narnia books at all. Won't let me read them. I read the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe when they were little and maybe they were too young and I turned them off.
We don't have Redwall on tapes, they would love that I'm sure. Where do you get them from?

We find our Redwall tapes at the library.
Backgrond on Brian Jaques: He was a delivering to a school for the blind in England and the director (an old friend) asked if he would like to read aloud to the children. The books were depressing, according to BJ. So, he wrote a story for the kids and made it very descriptive so they could "picture" the scenes. He left the story there to read the next time he came. The director found it, took it to a publisher friend and now we all can enjoy Redwall.

Our 13yo son is crazy about them! He is reading the entire series right now. It's a beautiful thing, because he has a vision learning problem, and had vision therapy, so this is a major accomplishment for him!
They're great books in his opinion!!!

If only someone would come up with a unit study for the Redwall books! That would be awesome!
We had Deeper then Ever Pie tonight. My daughter finds the Redwall recipes on-line. It is so nice to have a future culinary arts student at home. I rarely cook supper anymore!

Well Laura~ you are indeed very blessed then!!! I do love cooking myself though, so though I'd LOVE to have a *cook* in the house, I'd also miss cooking myself! I watch the Food Network a lot!

We watch the Food Network alot too! Shayna's favorites are Giada, Michael, the Barefoot Contessa (can't remember her name!), and Paula Deen.
I don't really like to cook. I tease that I'd rather be scrubbing toilets!

I love the Barefoot Contessa and Paula. I love Rachel Ray, and how she makes great fresh food in 30 minutes, a woman after my own heart.
I love Sandra Lee (I think that's her name), and Emeril, and everyone! I loved the show they had where they picked the next *TV Food Star*. That was fun to watch too.

Hi Alice,
My son recently started listening to Redwall on audio CD. I purchased the first one....Redwall Book One: The Wall. There are 9 CDs. Half way through the third CD, the narrarator said it was the end of book one and then the beginning of book two, The Quest.
I'm a little confused. I thought the second book was Mossflower. Am I missing something  ?

Hi Donna, I'm not Alice, but maybe I can clarify...My son also has these on tape as well as the HB book. Redwall is divided into three *books* within the volume of "Redwall". You are correct that the second book in the series is Mossflower. It's just the authors way of sectioning his story within the first book of the series. I think he wanted to make it interesting for the readers. HTH, and is he enjoying it?? My son can't get enough of those little woodland creatures We're an animal loving family so it's right up his alley

Well...enjoying it doesn't quite describe it. How about obsessed . I require him to listen to a book on tape for 45 minutes each day. Since he started with Redwall, he's been snuggled up on my bed for up to two hours at a time . He's loving it.

Just wanted to chime in that my ds is a big Redwall fan as well. He has read all the books out so far and re-read some of the older ones. We gave him the Redwall Cookbook for his birthday last week and he and I had fun cooking a Redwall Autumn Feast for the family. It's a really cute book - something even younger children would enjoy!
