Great thoughts, Jenn. I think it would be a good time to bring out the stories of past great Olympians. How about Eric Liddell and the Chariots of Fire story? In addition to the noble Olympian theme, it is being promoted as a great story for the Pauline Year on one of those St. Paul links. There are Pauline themes there of "running the race."

Mary, that is a great idea! It has been years since we saw "Chariots of Fire," and I think all my boys would enjoy it (I know my dh would!)
I share many of the sentiments about the choice of China and the changes in "professionalism" with the athletes.
I remember so vividly watching the Olympics when I was little- it was such a HUGE deal back then, seemingly more than now. I remember watching Olga Korbut, and later Nadia Comaneci. And how half the girls in my school got the "Dorothy Hamill" haircut!
I remember sitting with one of my friends, in a restaurant parking lot, listening to the US HOCKEY team; we didn't go in to eat until they WON! And we were so excited, almost in tears! And everyone in the restaurant was cheering.
Such great memories.
I am making up a little schedule for our own "daily events." I so appreciate everyone's super suggestions!!
God Bless,

I just wanted to add, Brid is thoroughly enjoying this Unit study.
I allowed her to put it together the way she wanted.
she chose lapbook style.
She has driven it all.
Its been great to watch and see her enthusiasm.
Between Enchanted Learning & homeschool share we created our own style.

I just wanted to follow-up to my previous posts about China as the Olympic venue.
Here is an article from EWTN news about the human rights abuses around the Olympics. It seems that abuses actually escalated because of the Olympic site being in China. I was especially saddened by the one million people whose homes were taken away and razed to make way for the new venues. A million people.
http://www.ewtn.com/vnews/getstory.asp?number=90594
Here is an excerpt:
"On the broader question of China's respect for human rights, Freedom House recently published "China and the Olympics." The Washington, D.C.-based organization said that Beijing has intensified repression in several respects during preparations for the Olympics.
Freedom House commented that Chinese journalists face greater repression today than in 2001 when their country was awarded the Olympic Games. Not only do journalists still undergo Marxist indoctrination, but the Central Propaganda Department dictates content through daily directives.
The games also led to evicting more than 1 million people from their homes to make way for new facilities."
We are proud to say we didn't watch one nano-second of coverage on either NBC or CBC. In reading about all the abuses, I have concluded that these games were actually worse than the Nazi games of '36.
Edited to Add: We are not trying to come across as holier than others, because we refrained from watching the Olympics. I am sure each family weighted the facts available in the Catholic media leading up to the games and made their own decisions. I am proud of the decision WE made as a family. I wonder how many Chinese actually got to watch the games if they wanted to?

Btw, we have been excited to see that the next Olympics is in London - my second son Greg is in London working so it seems a bit more exciting for us..
The banner is interesting, too. I put the image up on our blog.

OK, it took me a minute to figure out the banner! I must be getting too old!
I am excited about it being in London, and I actually said, out loud, that I would like to go! Me, who hates flying!
I didn't know you had a son in London! Golly, that is far away for you all.
Lastly, what is the location of the beautiful mountains and water, above the London logo and St. Paul?

That's New Zealand - where we will be next week! I'm going for work ( I work part time at running a Kumon Education Centre). Work is paying for me to attend a conference so I am paying for the four younger kids and dh to accompany me. My first trip overseas..and sorry to hijack the Olympics thread.

Very neat!!!, but, ummm.... I believe the "hijacker" was me.
I was also wondering what everyone thought of the Olympics and the Chinese efforts and if you saw any interesting news items. I think I came away with much more empathy for the Chinese people (not that I haven't felt fairly horrible for them before the Games,) but more of an appreciation of how we all want to be able to be proud of our countries and to be shown in the best possible light to the rest of the world.
