[QUOTE=aussieannie] But really, wouldn't the church be meaning not to have as many children as possible with no proper intention in raising them properly in the faith? QUOTE
actually it is taking into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and material wellbeing of those children. no time to find the document/writing now.
this is where it gets personal.

I once counted 19 Catholic homeschool moms I knew who were on Antidepressants at the same time. It was alarming and depressing to me- and I really wanted to figure out why??? why are we all "falling apart"?? So for him to see falling apart people day in and day out, well, maybe this is where he is right now. |

I think there that a hugh proportion is most likely due to physical reasons rather than pure emotional/spiritual problems or the ability not to cope with the demands of children - I think the primary cause is ill health (unbalanced hormones for eg: due to so many toxic elements we live with in this modern, industrial day and age) But couldn't that be seen as a cross to carry that doesn't necessarily need to avoided completely by not having more children? (I know you are not saying that, but many would..) I'm not talking about something absolutely extreme, but it IS common and it doesn't necessarily mean that children will be unduely advantaged emotionally/spiritually, if the mother has a bout of this - often this cross will bring greater good from it - she turns to prayer more fervently, she offers this suffering for the salvation of her children or their spiritual wealfare....this is the point - does these things HAVE to mean a spiritual/emotional disaster? God tells as he allows suffering in order to bring greater good from it if we allow Him.

I know of a mom who is much younger than her dh. They had their last child when he was 55, because of that future issue. they calculated that the odds were pretty good that he might not be around to actively parent another child, taking into consideration what they knew about his health, etc, and yet for someone else, a dad at age 60 is ready and called to have more. It really all is such a personal thing, and I am sorry that someone hurt you by questioning you and your dh's age/having more children.
I think we all have our "sensitive spot" with this entire subject. Just today I was asked (by a wellmeaning, very Catholic homeschool family) "when are you going to "catch up?" (to them, they mean, as they have more kids than us.) Now, I know it is all in good fun and all, but it hurts alot and I can't tell you how many times since Maria we have heard that comment

While I don't know any mothers on antidepressants (or they just don't offer that kind of information up.) I agree very much with Annie on this. I think it's more our enviroment, diet, and stress more than it is the children. My kids don't drive me crazy one bit, but the world sure does!!

Speaking as a moderator here.
Please end the conversation about Greg Popcak's statements and the interpretation of Church teaching.
What I think would be most beneficial at this point would be to discuss how AP does work with closely spaced children. I will start another thread for this.
We really, really do not want to lock threads so please be considerate about this. Thank you.
