I'm in the midst of a miserable dental situation, and have been put on a *very strong* antibiotic called clindamycin. This is the third time in two months I've been put on it. I have an intolerance to penicillin - in that, I get a rash and feel ill, not a true allergy - so they chose this particular medication.

The first time they put me on it, just before Thanksgiving, the tooth in question was discovered to be infected badly. My dentist put me on clindamycin because it is very strong, but warned me I *must* eat yogurt with each dosage because it could do some real damage to my intestines. It seemed fine, I ate the yogurt, but a few days *after* I was done with it, I developed a rash from the trunk down (not itchy, just red) and I was very, very dizzy for some time after.

The second time they put me on it was after the tooth was extracted as a precaution (though there was no infection present). I had less of a reaction, kind of itchy and a bit dizzy now and then, but nothing too bad.

Now, I have another infection under the surgery site and I'm back on clindamycin again! I know it's important to get rid of the infection but I am concerned about so much medication, particularly such a harsh one.

Has anyone had any experience with this particular antibiotic?

Can anyone recommend steps I can take to counteract any damage or effects from taking antibiotics?

I have been on antibiotics all of maybe three or four times in my life (before this), so I think I have a low tolerance for these things.

Any advice is appreciated! (And thanks for listening. )

you can get acidophyllus.. the good bacteria.. so that you get more than just by eating yogurt.. and the recommendation is to continue it for 30 days after you finish the antibiotic..

Oh, poor Dawn! I know how hard things can be when they are going on in your mouth. I know you will be very grateful when this is all done.

I, too, have a reaction to penicillon, and have been on that antibiotic as well. It is a strong one, and one thing that I found was helpful was acidopholus, which is the culture in the yogurt that you need (especially for yeast infections) and kept taking it after I finished the medication, since it is still in your system even after you have finished. You can do that as well as the yogurt.

I hope this helps!

Thank you for the advice, Jodie and Fuzzy. I'm eating yogurt each time I take the pill (Dannon Activia) but I hadn't thought about keeping it up after finishing the pills. That's a good point.

I have a slight reaction started - flushed red chest, bit itchy - but that's all so far. Hopefully that's the worst it will be ...

Dawn,
I know there is a homeopathic remedy which is specific to dental surgery etc but I don't know which one. (I've just started investigating homeopathy.)

You could google remedies and see what you come up with or let me know and I will look in my books and get back to you.

Pam

Dear Dawn. I HIGHLY reccomend taking probiotics. Shipping is only 4.99 and they ship the same day. I get most of my products from the at very low prices.

I also read about some homeopathic remedies for dental issues.

Calendula- This remedy can help the body overcome inflammation, infection, and abscess. It can be taken internally in potentized form, or used as an herbal tincture. Applied to injured gums and areas around the teeth, the tincture can help reduce the chance of infection, and help the tissues heal after being cut or bruised.

Hypericum- This remedy is known for its soothing effect when nerves or nerve-filled body areas are injured. Shooting, jabbing pains are often felt. Hypericum is very useful after oral surgery, especially root canals.

You're in prayers.

I second Ruth's recommendation for probiotics! The only thing I wonder about is, can you be on antibiotics and pro-biotic products (whether yogurt or capsule) at the same time? I heard that the pro-biotic would counteract the anti-biotics affects.   My herbalist says that I must hit the pro-biotics hard after a course of anti-biotics..

Dawn,

here are the homeopathic remedies my small book recommends:

arnica for the bruising and also for shock to the system
calendula and hypericum as mentioned above
phosphorous for the spaced out anaesthetic feeling (would that help with the yucky feeling from the antibiotic, I wonder?)
staphysagria if the pain or wound is slow to heal
silica for slow healing abscesses
and my big book adds:
ruta 6c every three hours for up to 24 hours if there is infection in a socket after extraction

That seems to be it.

Thank you SO much, Pam, Lisa, Ruth and Annie ... you are all so kind, and I deeply appreciate your prayers and help. I'm going to look into all your suggestions asap - I think a trip to Whole Foods is in order this weekend.

ETA - I have an appointment with a nurse practitioner this afternoon. They wanted to see me right away because of the rash. I'm also going to ask them to do bloodwork while I'm there. I'll let you all know how it goes ...

Pam, can any of your above suggestions be taken while pregnant? Especially the ruta? My triple re-do root canal is infected today. The dentist, my neighbor is bringing home some antibiotics tonight. The children have a cleaning appt on Tuesday, & he said he would recheck the tooth then. I'm sure I'm facing extraction. I just don't know if the tooth will hold out until next week.

Sorry for the hijack, but this is very timely for me.

As far as I know yes but I know very little. Why not ring a practitioner and ask?

Pam
sorry, in a rush

It has been a bumpy few days. Thanks again everyone, for your prayers and advice.

I went to see a nurse practitioner on Friday afternoon who said I am definitely allergic to clindamycin and I should stop it immediately - the effects would only worsen. She prescribed yet another antibiotic for me "cefdinir" as I am so intolerant of amoxycillin (sp?) and other forms of penicillin.

Meantime, I had a little white shard of something wiggle its way out of the socket. The top of the area now has a swollen bump - though the side swelling has gone down dramatically. I don't know if the implant is being rejected or what.

I have to call the periodontist this morning to tell him A. I am no longer on clindamycin and B. things seem better and yet with this new swelling, possibly worse. I really don't want to have to go in again today or even this week. I have an appt. on the 15th for an xray and I'd like to just wait till then. I am not in pain, and things seem to be settling down. I have a feeling when I tell him about the white shard coming up he'll say come in. But his office is a good 25-30 mins away and it involves my mum coming to sit the boys and it really just fouls up our plans which for today were to get right back on track.

I'm sorry I'm complaining. I just feel so defeated by all this. I cannot wait to have it all over, whatever that means ...

Thanks for letting me vent.

Dawn,
I'm so glad you're feeling better. Could the shard possibly be a remainder of the original tooth material, or perhaps bone? (Don't know much about implants, but I'm guessing it's drilled into the bone, no?). Might be what was causing the aggravation in the first place.

I'm praying for the best for you. I've gone through my share of dental woes in the past, so I commisserate with you.

Valerie

That's what I was thinking. In fact, I saved the piece just in case they need to see it.

I just got off the phone with the office and they want me in tomorrow afternoon to look and see ...

Thank you, Lisa and Kelly. Your prayers came at just the right time - my appt. was at 1:30 today.

Well, the good news, the swelling is not the implant coming out. It is however an abcess and there is an awful infection going on. I showed him the shard, and he thinks when we did the extraction there must have been some bacteria introduced in some way.

He popped the abcess and cleaned it and sent me on my way with antibiotics for another week. I return next Tuesday to see if the implant needs to be removed to ensure total healing ...

I am praying that this heals on its own by next week. I cannot imagine going through all this again.

Thanks again, dear friends, for your support - your advice, your prayers, just being here. What a gift you all are!
