*********DAY #3*********
Novena Prayer for the Canonization of JPII for Maria's friend:
O Blessed Trinity, we thank You for having graced the Church with Pope John Paul II and for allowing the tenderness of your Fatherly care, the glory of the cross of Christ, and the splendor of the Holy Spirit, to shine through him. Trusting fully in Your infinite mercy and in the maternal intercession of Mary, he has given us a living image of Jesus the Good Shepherd, and has shown us that holiness is the necessary measure of ordinary Christian life and is the way of achieving eternal communion with you. Grant us, by his intercession, and according to Your will, the graces we implore, hoping that he will soon be numbered among your saints.
Amen

I wanted to give everyone an update on our friend John, for whom you have been praying. This update is from last night (Wed.)
"Praise report … It is a blessing to know we are praying in God’s will for John’s healing, the right staff was assembled with the necessary skills and the care givers are ever so considerate. John came through the heart valve replacement surgery without complications!
Specific prayer requests ... and as the Holy Spirit leads you to pray ...
1) thankfulness for God's providential oversight today
2) for the swelling in his Lungs and heart to continue to go down so the chest can be closed
3) for his body to expel fluids
4) the antibiotics to win the war with the infection now that the valve source has been removed and his heart and lungs are beginning to function properly
5) for the saints to rejoice and continue to pray."
Keep praying. Thank you so much!

This was wonderful news, Maria. John has been and continues in my prayers. May the Lord continue to heal and strengthen John, and guide the doctors caring for him.

Another update from John's wife:
The days are long, indeed. But they are filled with God’s faithfulness and love. Today was a good day for John! Although the surgeons could not close John’s chest due to infection and fluid, they removed the retractor (holding his chest open) and are pleased with how he is doing. The Infectious Disease doctor, Orthopedic and Neuro surgeons are eagerly awaiting their turn to check in on their interests, but are really unable to do any assessments because the focus right now is to get the heart surgery procedures behind us so John can regain strength to fight the infection. We are told that the immediate plan is to do a pectoral muscle graft flap to close over John’s heart and broken sternum. Please pray that the plastic surgeon selected to do this procedure will be able to do it this weekend so the chest can be closed. John’s condition remains complicated and there are so many peripheral issues and concerns. (Yesterday an ENT doctor was summoned to suction infection from John’s sinuses.) Please continue to pray for his nurses to be alert. Thank you all so much for your prayers and touching emails. They make ALL the difference.

Saturday Night
Praise report that today, Saturday, John’s surgery was completed to close his chest using the pectoral muscles. His condition this afternoon was sufficiently stable to enable his body being turned enough to examine the spinal surgery incisions for the first time in 2 weeks and the infection had not returned! He is now slightly elevated which assists draining fluids. Quick stats (Our God reigns) : John has been in 4 ICUs since Dec 15; He has been heavily sedated since Dec 17; He has more than 14 drips and is connected to 9 machines, vacuums and drains; every day John has beaten the doctors’ odds and challenges medical protocol … remains in critical condition and in God’s loving care.
Pray for healing of the infection in his lungs and that he may be taken off the Oxygen machine. Pray for sufficient stability to sustain a comprehensive MRI to accurately and thoroughly assess infection throughout his body.
