... or, actually, the place where there used to be a tooth?

It's a long story, but suffice it to say the Monday before Christmas I had to have an emergency dental extraction. It was supposed to happen Dec. 27th but the tooth suddenly started hurting like crazy that weekend. (I'm getting an implant to replace a tooth that was botched by a previous dentist. )I had it pulled, and the implant was put in. Once the area heals it will be topped with a crown.

Anway, the recovery has been long and sore. I'm due to have the stitches out this Wednesday but today something seems wrong. The gum beneath the extraction site is tight, swollen, throbbing, painful. I'm on lots of Motrin again, and hoping this can all just wait till my appt. on Weds. (Of course things like this always happen on a holiday. )

The motrin helps the pain, but I am very anxious that something is wrong, maybe there's an abcess or something. If you could spare a little prayer for me that this situation does not worsen (at least not until after the holiday), I'd be so very grateful.

Thank you, dear friends ...

Praying, Dawn. Can you rinse with warm salt water? That will help with the swelling, etc.

Oh, Dawn....offering prayers for you and hoping it can be taken care of ASAP. Some swelling is normal, but throbbing pain is usually not a good sign. IS your face swollen or just the gum around the stitches? Facial swelling is pretty much a positive sign that an abcess is forming. BTDT, not fun AT ALL.

Motrin can help, and I've had really good experience w/Tylenol PM for nighttime relief as well as using Orajel on the affected gum. Orajel might not be good to use, though, with stitches in place. Put a call in to the dentist!

Valerie

Thank you everyone. Knowing you are praying for me brings me immense relief.

Valerie, the gum is swollen directly below the missing tooth, on the front of the gum. My face is not swollen, just the gum around the area. The area under the stitches is slightly red, too, but it has been like that since the tooth was pulled. I have a medicated mouth wash to use, and at Tami's suggestion, I've started swishing with warm salt water.

I've just finished my second round of a very strong antibiotic, so I'm hoping there can't be an infection brewing ... And the pain has lessened, it's just that it feels kind of stiff.

I'll be heading to the periodontist Wednesday at 10 a.m. so I should know more then.

Thanks again, everyone.

Thanks Tami, and everyone. The gum is still very swollen though the Motrin and salt wash does help with the stiffness and pain. I developed a fever today, so I'm thinking maybe there is an infection ...

I'll know more tomorrow and then let you all know.

Thanks again, so very much, for your prayers.
