Hmmmmm....very interesting....I too just keep...um....growing up top. And the last baby I had lots of trouble with plugged ducts and Mastitis which I never had before with the other two nursing. I wonder if the Bjorn was causing some problems there? Good food for thought Jenn. BTW, I hated my sling with highly padded rails - hated it! That's one of the reasons I want no-frills, no padding. |

I should have said, I'm only super large when nursing. I can't believe (and the bra lady I use couldn't believe it either) how much bigger I got post partum. I know it's only 3 weeks and I should go down some, but the size is HUGE and such a problem for me. Perhaps some of the problem is the learning curve, since I'm not this size normally?

I am too Jenn - super large I mean postpartum! Uncomfortably large! But you're right not to compress too much - a recipe for disaster and you're still recovering from the C-section. They just feel sort of clumsy for awhile. Mine moderate around 1-2 months postpartum when the baby and I get in a groove nursing.

I have to tell you how I love my Ergo, I used to hate slings, but wanted to sling my babies, I was always in pain though. Until I got my ergo. I use the newborn insert, and my baby sits right against my body, and I love, love, love how comfortable it is.
My dh loves it so much too, that he won't let me wear baby when we go places because he wants to! I got mine off of ebay. So I paid a little less but there is a company who makes the same thing only more cheaply.
Other ladies really swear by their slings, but the ergo was the only one which just didn't hurt me after a while.
But just ignore me if you didn't to know about it... I know how tough it is to make decisions like this, I hate to buy something and then hate my purchase, I feel like I wasted money. |

Ok Rebecca - I have really been looking into your Ergo. I really like it. Is it really as comfortable as they say? My biggest concern is breastfeeding in the Ergo - it looks like it would be awkward. Did you nurse in the Ergo?
Is the infant insert weird to use? I like that it keeps baby in a sling like position, but it looks like he's about to slip right out of there. Was it fairly secure? I'm concerned cause it seems like *yet another thing to keep up with* and I feel at a loss for all of my hands already.
Does it put a lot of pressure on your breasts - it seems like it would be good in that department, but I can't really tell. I guess it depends on how tight you cinch those shoulder straps.
It sure is expensive - I'll check out ebay, but I really like that chocolate brown organic one on their site!!!
I'm so indecisive ladies! This is all such good food for thought though! Please keep the ideas coming. DeAnn - I looked at your Peanut Shell too. Very intriguing. Going to look into that further.

I don't want to add to your indecisiveness, as I am the queen of indecision and I know how painful it can be. But...
I used a sling for the last five babies. I had a great one that a friend had made, it was heavily padded but it worked great. I also tried the OTSBH but it never worked for me. My last two (before Seth) I used a Maya Wrap and for the most part really liked it. In fact, Seth is sleeping in it right now.
My problem with ring slings though, even the Maya, is I never feel completely "hands-free". I always feel like I need to keep my hand close enough to support the baby so even if I am using both hands for something, like pushing a shopping cart, I don't feel completely secure.
With the last baby, when she was a few months old and didn't like the Maya, I discovered the Moby D. It is wonderful! Completely hands-free! Now, I haven't put Seth in it yet. (It is outside in the van where it is cold, and I am not going out until I have to! )
But I am sure it will work just as well if not better than the Maya Wrap.
You really need to go with the Moby D, not just the Moby, because it has more support as baby gets bigger.
If you want to stick with the ring sling, however, my vote is still for the Maya. I have the original with no padding. I got it off of Ebay.
Good luck making your decision. I feel your pain!

Thanks to Molly's reccomendation, I got the Moby from a very dear friend , and I won't go back to a ring sling. I've used a ring sling with all my babies, and this is the first time I feel they are secure, like Molly says, completely hands-free.

Hmmmmm...very interesting information from you wonderful ladies. I started thinking about the problems I had last baby with the plugged ducts, etc. And then Jenn reminded me that I grow large enough to feed quads after the baby is born. I had suppressed that memory. Yes, yes - the need for both hands free is very important since I have a very active and strong-willed toddler I know I'll be lunging for. It would be easy enough to sew the sling I want for next to nothing if I want to try another sling.
I really do like the Ergo a lot. It seems so versatile. And I took a look at the Moby D and the Peanut Shell and Hot Sling. I liked the close fitting design of the Moby and no buckles/straps/closures to fumble with. That's a plus! LaStellaBlu offers all of the carriers we've been talking about with free shipping at least. Ebay didn't have great prices on the Ergo - it was the same as from the Ergo website. I'll keep looking.
Keep the recommendations and opinions coming ladies!

Mom4Life is where I got my Moby D. The owner, I think her name is Heather, was very helpful when I was trying to decide what to buy. She has a sling comparison chart on her site. She also sometimes has used slings and wraps at a discount. The best thng for me is that she donates 10% of sales to a crisis pregnancy center.

Jennifer,
Just to add my 2 cents.....
I got a Baby Roo sling just recently. (I traded it for soap and candles at a sale she was at ) and it is really comfy. She makes them herself with soft stretchy material and they feel great. Mind you I'm still 10 weeks off from the baby coming but I tried it with a baby and it felt great! I could never fit a baby in a sling comfortably before. I'm pretty sure she sells on ebay and I know she ships to the US. Her website is: Baby Roo

Did you line in the same fabric or choose something coordinating?
Do you think it looks better or functions better lined? I don't mind lining. I'm not a great seamstress by any means, but I think I could handle the lining.
Did you choose aluminum or plastic rings from RingSling?
Sorry for all the questions Thanks for letting me pick your brain. |
|

No problem, ask all you need to know. I used the plastic rings, and I used a coordinating fabric for the lining. They turned out quite cute, I think. I don't know if the lining made it more structurally sound or not, but I like the look better.
This is what the fabric looks like. I mention on the blog that I thought Em's sling was upside down, but I was wrong, it was going in the right way.

The Beco Baby looks a lot like the Ergo - I like it - thanks for the heads up!
And I really liked the stretchy Baby Roo! Thanks Trish. Was it hard to get the right size??? I like the soft fabric options a lot. I'm a pink sort of a girl, and since I'm having a girl that pretty pink chenille looks sooo tempting!

Oooh! Thanks Cindy! You were posting the same time I was! I love the pictures of your slings - they came out so great! I'm definitely inspired. You picked out great coordinating fabrics!
BTW - My folks live about 40 min south of Ft. Campbell - we have so much respect for those guys and their families. I didn't know you had a son based out of Ft. Campbell! I know we've been praying for him, but I don't think I knew he was there, or actually based there. Sending extra prayers for him and his family and YOU this morning. We're so grateful for his service!
Didn't mean to hijack my own thread - just thought I'd say "small world" and Thanks!

You are so welcome! Actually, my son is in Iraq, my son in law is at Ft. C now. I love how they are closer to my dad in AL. It's nice for my family to get to see my dd and her little one. My son(when not deployed) is stationed in Savannah at Hunter AAF. Also very convenient to my family in AL!!!

No it wasn't hard. I'm usually a larger size up top IYKWIM and with pregnancy and nursing it gets even larger. She did say that it could be easily exchanged if it was too big. I picked a large. And the fabric is sooooo soft. I can't wait to use it.
She was still using one for her 2 year old boy. She's also expecting a baby same time as me and she's Catholic too.

Resurrecting this old thread. I borrowed my sister's Bjorn that has more back support. I just loved wearing it. It's supportive, light, and ds enjoyed being in it. BUTT it's also the first time I got a clogged duct and then mastitis this postparum time, so I'm fairly certain it's linked to wearing it. The straps fall in the wrong place for larger topped mommies.
So I've been using an Ergo, too. I don't like the infant support, a bit cumbersome, but we'll outgrow that pretty soon and I'll be able to wear him on the back and hip eventually, too. I'm practicing more often. The weight of the baby is on the hips, which is so comfortable.
Wraps and slings aren't working for this big guy -- over 16 pounds at 3 months. He and I both don't like them.

Jenn, have you tried a mei tai like a kozy? The weights a bit more on your shoulders than wtih an ergo, but I prefer it to the ergo for front carries, and a longer body (like kozy) can support their head during that stage before they have complete control.
I'm thinking it sounds like a good option for your big guy (who's still little, right, in his control and such?) and a little less cumbersome than the ergo with infant insert.
I think the ergo is an AWESOME back carrier, but for that style carrier (an ergo is really a mei tai with buckles and padded waist), I think the kozy is nicer on the front. Jmo.
You might try to find a babywearing group in your area and you could try a few different ones without buying.

Jenn,
I'm convinced that the Bjorn may have contributed to my plugged duct issues. I'm sorry wraps aren't working as I was just about to rave about the Moby wrap which I decided at the last minute to try. I know Molly uses them, and Ruth, and then I saw Helen with one. I do love it! And there is no pressure on my breasts! It has been a lifesaver for me!
I did want to mention that you might want to consider reading through this thread about nursing pads. I know it might seem a stretch, but these Danish wool nursing pads have been a dream and I am pretty sure that wearing them has at least helped in my ability to avoid plugged ducts so far.
I panic every time I feel a plugged duct starting - I know where you are too with the mastitis - nothing to mess around with! Prayers for you and for recovery!!! I hope you can find something to carry that little (big ) guy around in - if not, there's always a wagon?

Thanks for the tip. I need good back support, but also ease of putting on and off. I know straigh off I can't do the Moby -- too much fabric and adjusting. Does the Kozy offer a lot of support?
What I do like about the Ergo and Bjorn is that he can still look around. Yes, he needs head support, but he wants to look out.
My necessity of using a carrier is mostly for shopping. I CANNOT carry him in the infant car seat, and the seat I have doesn't fit correctly on the shopping carts, so I have no room for groceries, etc., etc....
I'll see if I can find babywearing support. That's a great suggestion.

I'm allergic to wool. I read the thread with interest until I got to the wool part. I know everyone said it's not itchy, but even the softest, purest wool will give me a rash.
