Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Thankyou so much ladies. I am so sorry I have remained so quiet. I have a tendency towards lurkdom...in many walks of life. One of the reasons why I fall prey to despondency and despair is because I tend to remain a maverick...out there all by myself. I even resist asking for help by praying for myself.   Pride...pride...pride. I need to pray for humility as well.

That said, I FELT your prayers today. Today was the most peaceful day we've had in months.

God bless you ladies. Don't stop praying and know I pray for your intentions as well.

Kathleen

Kathleen,

We have had a very tough year with our oldest daughter, too. Don't know if you saw it, but I wrote a postsimilar to yours last winter. She's always been kind of "high-maintenance," but in the last year (especially during my pregnancy w/ Clara), her behavior just seemed to go from bad to worse. I felt very despondant, as you do right now, last winter. I questioned our decision to homeschool, being open to more children, and beat myself up over my parenting mistakes. My dd has been diagnosed with ODD as well, so I know what you mean about "tradional parenting strategies" not working. Spanking doesn't work. Time-out doesn't work. Taking away privleges doesn't work. My fil really thinks that if I just swat her on the behind everytime she misbehaves that her behavior would improve. WRONG! This child has challenged everything I believed about raising children.

The good news is that things are better now. It has been almost a year since I wrote that post begging for help. We started counseling this past summer. The first counselor we tried didn't work out so well, but the counselor she's seeing now seems to really be helping. I see the same counselor for anxiety problems and she has helped me come up with strategies for dealing with Mary Beth's behavior. I think that there is no quick fix for kids like this. (not that I think you are looking for one) What works for other people doesn't matter--what does Mary Beth need? What will work for Mary Beth? That is the only question that matters to me. Other people's systems don't work. It has taken a lot of hard work and digging deep (emotionally and spiritually) for me and dh. I think that perhaps the turning point was late this past summer when I made a big sacrifice (well, it was big to me) and offered it specifically for my daughter.

Anyway, I'm not terribly wise or anything...but I know what you're going though--I've thought the same thoughts myself! I just want to encourage you, let you know that I'm praying for you.

Please feel free to pm if you want to talk this over further...

Dawn
